    Andreas Angelidakis works between the various fields of curating, theory, architecture and the arts. In his position text the author reflects on the way he develops new narrative and design methods as part of a personal project of a challenging self-reflexive and psychological nature. States of being become inherently fluid as illustrated by the project Troll, which Angelidakis suggests is an autobiographical project, in which a building wants to leave the city to become a mountain: human bodies transition into nature into architecture, and back again. Describing his work and growing up in his hometown Athens Angelidakis discusses architecture and queer identities in terms of being ‘unauthorised’

    Supplementary material to "Kemp, N., Angelidakis, V., Luli, S., Nadimi, S. (2021). How do roots interact with layered soils?" This document reports geotechnical data from image processing of 30 images, emerging from CT scans of 2 soil-root samples A and B, for 5 stages of root growth corresponding to 1,4,8,11 and 15 days after germination and for 3 machine learning-based classifiers used for image segmentation, trained using 5%, 10% and 20% of the total number of images. Both samples feature layered soil, made of clay, silt, sand and gravel (Sample A: gravelly top layer - Sample B: clayey top layer). Values of void ratio and root volume ratio versus elevation are provided, considering regions of interest of various sizes.</div

    ATLAS Tile Calorimeter Upgrades for HL-LHC

    The High-Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is expected to begin in 2026, delivering a luminosity of ~5×10^34 cm −2 s −1 , with up to 200 interactions per 25 ns bunch crossing. In order to cope with the expected high trigger rates and intense radiation conditions, the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter will be upgraded with readout architectures that will allow to maintain an optimal performance in its future operation

    Computation of an MRI brain atlas from a population of Parkinson’s disease patients

    Abstract Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder of the brain. This study presents an MRI-based brain atlas of PD to characterize associated alterations for diagnostic and interventional purposes. The atlas standardizes primarily the implicated subcortical regions such as the globus pallidus (GP), substantia nigra (SN), subthalamic nucleus (STN), caudate nucleus (CN), thalamus (TH), putamen (PUT), and red nucleus (RN). The data were 3.0 T MRI brain images from 16 PD patients and 10 matched controls. The images used were T1-weighted ( T 1 w ), T2-weighted ( T 2 w ) images, and Susceptibility Weighted Images (SWI). The T1w images were the reference for the inter-subject non-rigid registration available from 3DSlicer. Anatomic labeling was achieved with BrainSuite and regions were refined with the level sets segmentation of ITK-Snap. The subcortical centers were analyzed for their volume and signal intensity. Comparison with an age-matched control group unravels a significant PD-related T1w signal loss in the striatum (CN and PUT) centers, but approximately a constant volume. The results in this study improve MRI based PD localization and can lead to the development of novel biomarkers

The search uses proton--proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb1^{-1}. Decays of CP-even hh bosons to ττ\tau\tau or bbbb pairs with the ZZ boson decaying to electron or muon pairs are considered, as well as hbbh \rightarrow bb decays with the ZZ boson decaying to neutrinos. No evidence for the production of an AA boson in these channels is found and the 95% confidence level upper limits derived for \sigma (gg\rightarrow A) \times \mbox{BR}(A \rightarrow Zh) \times \mbox{BR}(h \rightarrow f\bar{f}) are 0.098--0.013 pb for f=τf=\tau and 0.57--0.014 pb for f=bf=b in a range of mA=m_A = 220--1000 GeV. The results are combined and interpreted in the context of two-Higgs doublet models

The evaluation of the luminosity scale is performed using several luminometers, and comparisons between these luminosity detectors are made to assess the accuracy, consistency and long-term stability of the results. A luminosity uncertainty of dL/L = +/- 1.9% is obtained for the 22.7 fb1^{-1} of pp collision data delivered to ATLAS at s\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV in 2012

    Searches for heavy diboson resonances in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    © 2016, The Author(s).Searches for new heavy resonances decaying to WW, WZ, and ZZ bosons are presented, using a data sample corresponding to 3.2 fb−1 of pp collisions at s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Analyses selecting ννqq, ℓνqq, ℓℓqq and qqqq final states are combined, searching for an arrow-width resonance with mass between 500 and 3000 GeV. The discriminating variable is either an invariant mass or a transverse mass. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. Three benchmark models are tested: a model predicting the existence of a new heavy scalar singlet, a simplified model predicting a heavy vector-boson triplet, and a bulk Randall-Sundrum model with a heavy spin-2 graviton. Cross-section limits are set at the 95% confidence level and are compared to theoretical cross-section predictions for a variety of models. The data exclude a scalar singlet with mass below 2650 GeV, a heavy vector-boson triplet with mass below 2600 GeV, and a graviton with mass below 1100 GeV. These results significantly extend the previous limits set using pp collisions at s=8 TeV.[Figure not available: see fulltext.

    Architecture is not only that which is built. Architecture is made up of different aspects, both material and immaterial. The atmosphere, the sounds, the smells, the possibility of interaction between human bodies: these all constitute characteristics of space, characteristics that are assuming an increasing importance within architectural research worldwide. Within this field of thought about “Architecture Beyond Building”, we focus on one particular non-material spatial phenomenon that lies ‘beyond the built’: sound. We have created, thus, an interactive sonic map of Athens, which presents, in an unexpected way, fragments of the atmosphere of the city. What would a non-visual map look like? What would it feel like if you wandered within a forest of headphones, playing sounds from different places in Athens? How would it feel if you found yourself in a ‘map’ that only appeared when you walked in it? What would it be like if the map only appeared when you invited one more person to be with you? The Greek pavilion addresses these questions through an atmospheric interactive ‘game’, presenting fragments of sounds and visual sequences of Athens. The visitor recreates the space around him through his own presence and movement. The map appears only where he walks, and/or when he invites one more person to sit next to him. The bodies of the visitors react with one another and with the space itself, creating a dynamic, changing field. This walk in the pavilion takes you “out there”, through invisible Athens. The pavilion brings forth the aspects of architecture that are ‘beyond the material’: the ‘beyond the built’, the almost unreachable, elusive aspects of space, such as sound, non-visual senses, atmosphere. It challenges, thus, the limits of architecture, the limits of what can be mapped and re-located and what cannot. An edited collection by A. Karandinou, C. Achtypi, S.
