    Polymer multimode waveguide optical and electronic PCB manufacturing

    The paper describes the research in the £1.3 million IeMRC Integrated Optical and Electronic Interconnect PCB Manufacturing (OPCB) Flagship Project in which 8 companies and 3 universities carry out collaborative research and which was formed and is technically led by the author. The consortium’s research is aimed at investigating a range of fabrication techniques, some established and some novel, for fabricating polymer multimode waveguides from several polymers, some formulations of which are being developed within the project. The challenge is to develop low cost waveguide manufacturing techniques compatible with commercial PCB manufacturing and to reduce their alignment cost. The project aims to take the first steps in making this hybrid optical waveguide and electrical copper track printed circuit board disruptive technology widely available by establishing and incorporating waveguide design rules into commercial PCB layout software and transferring the technology for fabricating such boards to a commercial PCB manufacturer. To focus the research the project is designing an optical waveguide backplane to tight realistic constraints, using commercial layout software with the new optical design rules, for a demonstrator into which 4 daughter cards are plugged, each carrying an aggregate of 80 Gb/s data so that each waveguide carries 10 Gb/s

    Limits on neutral Higgs boson production in the forward region in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV

    Limits on the cross-section times branching fraction for neutral Higgs bosons, produced in pp collisions at TeX TeV, and decaying to two tau leptons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, are presented. The result is based on a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1, collected with the LHCb detector. Candidates are identified by reconstructing final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. A model independent upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on a neutral Higgs boson cross-section times branching fraction. It varies from 8.6 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 0.7 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 250 GeV, and is compared to the Standard Model expectation. An upper limit on tan β in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model is set in the TeX scenario. It ranges from 34 for a CP -odd Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 70 for a pseudo-scalar Higgs boson mass of 140 GeV

    The dynamic business environment is seen by many as requiring a significant change in our thinking about leadership. Shared leadership is one alternative to the 'classic' vertical model and implies that either no individual performs all of the leadership functions or that within an organisation, there is a set of individuals who collectively perform such functions. This emerging model of leadership is seen to be of particular relevance to the management of new ventures; however, both the construct of shared leadership and leadership within new ventures remain under-researched areas. This paper reports the results of a pilot study that employed a case study approach to analyse the factors integral to the appointment of a CEO, the criteria upon which founders and CEOs make their decisions and the process by which decisions are made after a CEO has been appointed

The search uses proton--proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb1^{-1}. Decays of CP-even hh bosons to ττ\tau\tau or bbbb pairs with the ZZ boson decaying to electron or muon pairs are considered, as well as hbbh \rightarrow bb decays with the ZZ boson decaying to neutrinos. No evidence for the production of an AA boson in these channels is found and the 95% confidence level upper limits derived for \sigma (gg\rightarrow A) \times \mbox{BR}(A \rightarrow Zh) \times \mbox{BR}(h \rightarrow f\bar{f}) are 0.098--0.013 pb for f=τf=\tau and 0.57--0.014 pb for f=bf=b in a range of mA=m_A = 220--1000 GeV. The results are combined and interpreted in the context of two-Higgs doublet models

    Search for top quark decays t → qH with H → γγ using the ATLAS detector

    A search is performed for flavour-changing neutral currents in the decay of a top quark to an up-type (c, u) quark and a Higgs boson, where the Higgs boson decays to two photons. The proton-proton collision data set used corresponds to 4.7 fb-1 at √ = 7TeV and 20.3fb-1 at √ = 8TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Top quark pair events are searched for in which one top quark decays to qH and the other decays to bW. Both the hadronic and the leptonic decay modes of the W boson are used. No significant signal is observed and an upper limit is set on the t → qH branching ratio of 0.79 at the 95% confidence level. The corresponding limit on the tqH coupling combination λtcH 2 + λtuH 2 is 0.17

    Search for a fermiophobic Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel with the ATLAS detector

    A search for a fermiophobic Higgs boson using diphoton events produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=7 TeV is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1 collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. A specific benchmark model is considered where all the fermion couplings to the Higgs boson are set to zero and the bosonic couplings are kept at the Standard Model values (fermiophobic Higgs model). The largest excess with respect to the background-only hypothesis is found at 125.5 GeV, with a local significance of 2.9 standard deviations, which reduces to 1.6 standard deviations when taking into account the look-elsewhere effect. The data exclude the fermiophobic Higgs model in the ranges 110.0–118.0 GeV and 119.5–121.0 GeV at 95 % confidence level

    Background and signal estimation for a low mass Higgs boson at the LHC

    The discovery of the Higgs boson(s) is the major goal of the LHC which will start taking data in 2008. In this work a data driven extraction of the background and statistical signal significance in the H→ZZ→4ℓ decay channel is presented. The background for Higgs masses as low as 130 GeV can be extracted with an error of 20%, using a sideband measurement from a single 30 fb-1 experiment. The predicted background distribution is best described by a double asymmetric Gaussian. An analytic formula is introduced which provides an accurate p-value that a Higgs discovery claim is consistent with a background fluctuation. The formula can be used in a single real measurement at LHC using as input the measured background and the profile likelihood asymmetric errors of this measurement. The method presented here can be applied to the general case of extrapolating from a signal-free data region to a candidate signal region. This is the case of supersymmetry searches at the LHC
