An Active helideck testbed for floating structures based on a Stewart-Gough platform

    No full text
A parallel robot testbed based on Stewart-Gough platform called Active-helideck is designed, developed and tested as a helicopter floating helideck. The objective of this testbed is to show the advantages of helicopters that use an active helideck upon landing on and taking off from ships or from offshore structures. Active-helideck compensates simulated movements of a ship at sea. The main goal of this study is to maintain the robot’s end effector (helideck) in a quasi-static position in accordance to an absolute inertial frame. Compensation is carried out through the coordinate action of its six prismatic actuators in function of an inertial measurement unit. Moreover, the simulation of the sea movement is done by a parallel robot called ship platform with three degrees of freedom. The ship platform is built with a vertical oscillation along the z axis, i.e. heave, and rotates on remaining axes, i.e. roll and pitch. Active helideck is able to compensate simulated movements by considering the ship as an inertial frame as observed in the experiment

Transcriptional Control of Metabolism and the Response to Ischemia in Muscle

Skeletal muscle is one of the largest tissues in humans and provides many pivotal functions to support life. Abnormality in skeletal muscle functions can lead to disease. For example, insulin resistance in skeletal muscle leads to type II diabetes. The underlying mechanisms that control energy balance in skeletal muscle remain largely elusive, especially at the genetic level. Here in the second chapter, I showed that MyoD mediated the transcriptional regulation of ACSL5, a mitochondrial protein, in C2C12 myoblasts via two E-box elements. A SNP rs2419621 (T) created a de novo E-box that together with the two pre-existing proximal E-boxes strongly enhances ACSL5 expression in both CV1 and C2C12 cells. In the third chapter, I identified a novel VGLL4-interacting protein IRF2BP2 and verified the interaction with co-immunoprecipitation and mammalian two-hybrid assays. Functionally, overexpression of IRF2BP2 and transcription factor TEAD1 activates mouse VEGF-A promoter in CV1 cells and enhances the biosynthesis of VEGF-A in C2C12 myoblasts. In vivo studies showed that ischemia induced the expression of IRF2BP2 by more than three fold, suggesting that IRF2BP2 could play a pivotal role during tissue ischemia. IRF2BP2 is a nuclear protein in both mouse cardiac myocytes and C2C12 myoblasts as demonstrated by immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry, respectively. Therefore, I sought to delineate the mechanism for the nuclear shuttling of IRF2BP2 in the fourth chapter. With various DNA alternations, I mapped the NLS to an evolutionarily conserved sequence 354ARKRKPSP361 in IRF2BP2. Deletion of the positively charged amino acids resulted in the abolishment of the NLS signal. Next, I showed that phosphorylation of serine 360 (S360) mediates the nuclear import of the protein. Whereas an alanine substitution (S360A) at the site resulted in perinuclear accumulation of the protein, an aspartic acid substitution (S360D) forced the nuclear accumulation. Nevertheless, the forced accumulation of the S360D mutant did not enhance the activation of VEGF-A promoter in CV1 cells as did the wild-type protein. My studies revealed two novel mechanisms by which skeletal muscle could harvest energy, thus providing new insight into the energy metabolism in skeletal muscl

Rewarding Innovation: Improving Federal Tax Support for Business R&D in Canada

Business innovation is viewed by many as a solution to Canada’s ailing productivity performance. One of the more troubling aspects of Canada’s innovation track record is that businesses spend relatively little on research and development (R&D) despite having access to some of the world’s most generous R&D tax incentives. Canada’s low levels of business R&D have called into question the effectiveness of Canada’s generous R&D tax incentives, particularly the flagship federal Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program. A deeper analysis, however, reveals that tax incentives are effective in stimulating more R&D – that is, Canada would have lower levels of business R&D in the absence of these inducements. Instead, the root cause of Canada’s business R&D deficit appears to stem from structural aspects of the economy and, more importantly, a lack of demand-related pressure to pursue innovation.Fiscal and Tax Competitiveness, Canada, research and development (R&D) incentives, Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program

This thesis proposes a annotated edition and a study of the historical narratives of Alexandre Herculano located between 1367-1433, Arras forum for Spain, The vault, and Castle of Faria in this period include the reign of Ferdinand and D . John I. Such narratives were published at the beginning of the Portuguese Romanticism initially in journals of Portuguese journals then were gathered in volumes with other historical narratives of the author, and published under the title Legends and Lore. This research was developed from concern over the lack of this material in our academic context, it is noteworthy that other works of Herculaneum are much more affordable and therefore more known and studied, for example, the novels The Fool ( 1843), Eurico the priest (1844), and the Monk Cistercian (1848). This annotated edition proposal, we intend school player, college player, even the lay reader in general. Therefore, we intend to put the scope of this public an issue with notes to assist them while reading these stories, to have an enriched text with relevant information to clarify and enable a better understanding of it. Keywords: Historical Narratives; Annotated Edition; Alexandre Herculano. See paper for full list of authors – 13 pages plus author list + cover pages (30 pages total), 5 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Phys. Lett. B, All figures including auxiliary figures are available at https://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/GROUPS/PHYSICS/PAPERS/HIGG-2013-06/International audienceA search for a heavy, CP-odd Higgs boson, AA, decaying into a ZZ boson and a 125 GeV Higgs boson, hh, with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The search uses proton--proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb1^{-1}. Decays of CP-even hh bosons to ττ\tau\tau or bbbb pairs with the ZZ boson decaying to electron or muon pairs are considered, as well as hbbh \rightarrow bb decays with the ZZ boson decaying to neutrinos. No evidence for the production of an AA boson in these channels is found and the 95% confidence level upper limits derived for \sigma (gg\rightarrow A) \times \mbox{BR}(A \rightarrow Zh) \times \mbox{BR}(h \rightarrow f\bar{f}) are 0.098--0.013 pb for f=τf=\tau and 0.57--0.014 pb for f=bf=b in a range of mA=m_A = 220--1000 GeV. The results are combined and interpreted in the context of two-Higgs doublet models

Abstract: The insertion of the feminist perspective in the (re)formulation of gender studies constituted a substantial step in the process of objection to the naturalizing, essentialist and binary character by that time attributed to gendered practices and, as an effect, new phenomena could be explored and critically analyzed in this domain of knowledge. The production of knowledge about men and masculinities is an example of this vast range of investigative possibilities in the field of gender studies, having multiplied after the 1970s, especially driven by studies developed by the Australian sociologist R. Connell. Connell was responsible, for example, for coining the term "hegemonic masculinity", which proved to be quite relevant for discussions of topics such as education, physical and mental health, violence, etc. Given the importance of the author for the examination of this theme, her work was taken as the basis for the formulation of the first step of this study. However, the progress linked to the development of new studies on men and masculinities demands an expansion of the dialogue with other scientific fields. In this perspective, building a dialogue with radical behavioral science can be useful to expand interpretations about the complex behavioral phenomena that constitute masculinities, since the theoretical and technological assumptions of Behavior Analysis have been increasingly used in the delimitation and construction of resolutive proposals regarding socially relevant themes. Hence, this dissertation aimed to build a radical behaviorist interpretation of the concepts of masculinity presented by R. Connell. Based on a theoretical and interdisciplinary research, masculinities, understood here as practices that are configured according to the position of men in the structure of gender relations, were examined in the light of Skinner's theory, a procedure that constituted the second step of the study. Thus, the different configurations of masculinities described by Connell – hegemonic, subordinate, complicity and marginalized – were described coherently with the Behavior Analysis’ scope. Since the different masculinity practices are socially constructed, complex and plural (i.e., may vary according to culture, space and time), themes such as social behavior and cultural practices were used to formulate the interpretative analysis at this stage of the study. Finally, the possibilities of strengthening politics aimed at transforming current masculinity practices which currently have harmful effects on men and society were explored. Topics such as ethical control, counter-control and face-to-face control were addressed to support the outlined discussions. In short, it became evident throughout this study that men, as they are fundamental parts of the problems arising from the harmful models of masculinity currently privileged in our society, must also be part of the solution
