Study of Bc+→J/ψDs+ and Bc+→J/ψDs∗+ decays in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

No full text
A study of Bc+→J/ψDs+ and Bc+→J/ψDs∗+ decays using 139 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected with the ATLAS detector from s = 13 TeV pp collisions at the LHC is presented. The ratios of the branching fractions of the two decays to the branching fraction of the Bc+→ J/ψπ+ decay are measured: B(Bc+→J/ψDs+)/B(Bc+→J/ψπ+) = 2.76 ± 0.47 and B(Bc+→J/ψDs∗+)/B(Bc+→J/ψπ+) = 5.33 ± 0.96. The ratio of the branching fractions of the two decays is found to be B(Bc+→J/ψDs∗+)/B(Bc+→J/ψDs∗+) = 1.93 ± 0.26. For the Bc+→J/ψDs∗+ decay, the transverse polarization fraction, Γ±±/Γ, is measured to be 0.70 ± 0.11. The reported uncertainties include both the statistical and systematic components added in quadrature. The precision of the measurements exceeds that in all previous studies of these decays. These results supersede those obtained in the earlier ATLAS study of the same decays with s = 7 and 8 TeV pp collision data. A comparison with available theoretical predictions for the measured quantities is presented. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Study of the B+c → J/ψD+s and B+c → J/ψD*s+ decays with the ATLAS detector

The decays B-c(+) -> J/psi D-s(+) and B-c(+) -> J/psi D-s*(+) are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.9 and 20.6 fb(-1) of pp collisions collected at centre-of-mass energies root s = 7 TeV and 8 TeV, respectively. Signal candidates are identified through J/psi -> mu(+)mu(-) and D-s(()*()+) -> phi pi(+)(gamma/pi(0)) decays. With a two-dimensional likelihood fit involving the B-c(+) reconstructed invariant mass and an angle between the mu(+) and D-s(+) candidate momenta in the muon pair rest frame, the yields of B-c(+) -> J/psi D-s(+) and B-c(+) -> J/psi D-s*(+), and the transverse polarisation fraction in B-c(+) -> J/psi D-s*(+) decay are measured. The transverse polarisation fraction is determined to be Gamma +/-+/-(B-c(+) -> J/psi D-s*(+))/Gamma(B-c(+) -> J/psi D-s*(+)) = 0.38 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.07, and the derived ratio of the branching fractions of the two modes is B-Bc+ -> J/psi D-s*+/B-Bc+ -> J/psi D-s(+) = 2.8(-0.8)(+1.2) +/- 0.3, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Finally, a sample of B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+) decays is used to derive the ratios of branching fractions B-Bc+ -> J/psi D-s*+/B-Bc+ -> J/psi pi(+) = 3.8 +/- 1.1 +/- 0.4 +/- 0.2 and B-Bc+ -> J/psi D-s*+/B-Bc+ -> J/psi pi(+) = 10.4 +/- 3.1 +/- 1.5 +/- 0.6, where the third error corresponds to the uncertainty of the branching fraction of D-s(+) -> phi(K+ K-)pi(+) decay. The available theoretical predictions are generally consistent with the measurement.ATLAS Collaboration, for complete list of authors see http://dx.doi.org/10.1140/epjc/s10052-015-3743-8</p

All figures including auxiliary figures are available at http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/GROUPS/PHYSICS/PAPERS/HION-2013-07/International audienceMeasurements of differential cross-sections for J/ψJ/\psi production in p+Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV at the LHC with the ATLAS detector are presented. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 28.1 nb1^{-1}. The J/ψJ/\psi mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel over the transverse momentum range 8<pT<308<p_{\mathrm{T}}<30 GeV and over the center-of-mass rapidity range 2.87<y<1.94-2.87<y^{*}<1.94. Prompt J/ψJ/\psi are separated from J/ψJ/\psi resulting from bb-hadron decays through an analysis of the distance between the J/ψJ/\psi decay vertex and the event primary vertex. The differential cross-section for production of nonprompt J/ψJ/\psi is compared to a FONLL calculation that does not include nuclear effects. Forward-backward production ratios are presented and compared to theoretical predictions. These results constrain the kinematic dependence of nuclear modifications of charmonium and bb-quark production in p+Pb collisions

No full text
Measurements of the differential production cross-sections of prompt and non-prompt J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons with transverse momenta between 8 and 360 GeV and rapidity in the range |y|<2 are reported. Furthermore, measurements of the non-prompt fractions of J/ψ and ψ(2S), and the prompt and non-prompt ψ(2S)-to-J/ψ production ratios, are presented. The analysis is performed using 140 fb-1 of s=13 TeV pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during the years 2015–2018

Measurement of b-quark fragmentation properties in jets using the decay B ± → J/ψK ± in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

No full text
The fragmentation properties of jets containing b-hadrons are studied using charged B mesons in 139 fb−1 of pp collisions at s = 13 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during the period from 2015 to 2018. The B mesons are reconstructed using the decay of B± into J/ψK±, with the J/ψ decaying into a pair of muons. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with radius parameter R = 0.4. The measurement determines the longitudinal and transverse momentum profiles of the reconstructed B hadrons with respect to the axes of the jets to which they are geometrically associated. These distributions are measured in intervals of the jet transverse momentum, ranging from 50 GeV to above 100 GeV. The results are corrected for detector effects and compared with several Monte Carlo predictions using different parton shower and hadronisation models. The results for the longitudinal and transverse profiles provide useful inputs to improve the description of heavy-flavour fragmentation in jets. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Measurement of J/ψ production in association with a W ± boson with pp data at 8 TeV

No full text
A measurement of the production of a prompt J/ψ meson in association with a W ± boson with W ± → μν and J/ψ → μ +μ − is presented for J/ψ transverse momenta in the range 8.5–150 GeV and rapidity |y J/ψ| <2.1 using ATLAS data recorded in 2012 at the LHC. The data were taken at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of s = 8 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb −1. The ratio of the prompt J/ψ plus W ± cross-section to the inclusive W ± cross-section is presented as a differential measurement as a function of J/ψ transverse momenta and compared with theoretical predictions using different double-parton-scattering cross-sections. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Measurement of the prompt J/ψ pair production cross-section in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

No full text
The production of two prompt J/ψ mesons, each with transverse momenta pT>8.5 GeV and rapidity |y|<2.1, is studied using a sample of proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 11.4 fb −1 collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The differential cross-section, assuming unpolarised J/ψ production, is measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the lower- pT J/ψ meson, di- J/ψ pT and mass, the difference in rapidity between the two J/ψ mesons, and the azimuthal angle between the two J/ψ mesons. The fraction of prompt pair events due to double parton scattering is determined by studying kinematic correlations between the two J/ψ mesons. The total and double parton scattering cross-sections are compared with predictions. The effective cross-section of double parton scattering is measured to be σeff=6.3±1.6(stat)±1.0(syst) mb

No full text
A search for the decays of the Higgs and Z bosons to J/psi gamma and Upsilon(nS)gamma (n = 1,2,3) is performed with pp collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 20.3 fb(-1) collected at root s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above expected backgrounds and 95% C.L. upper limits are placed on the branching fractions. In the J/psi gamma final state the limits are 1.5 x 10(-3) and 2.6 x 10(-6) for the Higgs and Z boson decays, respectively, while in the Upsilon(1S, 2S, 3S)gamma. final states the limits are (1.3, 1.9, 1.3) x 10(-3) and (3.4, 6.5, 5.4) x 10(-6), respectively
