    Building Quality Assurance into Metadata Creation: an Analysis based on the Learning Objects and e-Prints Communities of Practice

    This paper challenges some of the assumptions underlying the metadata creation process in the context of two communities of practice, based around learning object repositories and open e-Print archives. The importance of quality assurance for metadata creation is discussed and evidence from the literature, from the practical experiences of repositories and archives, and from related research and practices within other communities is presented. Issues for debate and further investigation are identified, formulated as a series of key research questions. Although there is much work to be done in the area of quality assurance for metadata creation, this paper represents an important first step towards a fuller understanding of the subject.

    The paper is a critical argument foregrounding race, the senses, and the materials of literacy practices. The author argues that counter-colonial literacies in the contemporary times require openly acknowledgement of the influences of white imperialism and racism in dominant schooling practices. The first concern is narrow conceptions of literacy and schooling that follow a white racial script, and which function as a form of historical reproduction, control, and privilege. The second is the need to acknowledge the need to rediscover the sensory nature of literacy practices that is intrinsic to many cultures, and which is transformed in human interactions with new digital forms of textual production. The final argument is the need to attend to the materiality of literacy practices, including the meanings connected to the material ecology. This principle is particularly relevant to Indigenous culture and experience, but likewise, to all digital environments where the materials of literacy practices are continually shifting

    Two dialkyl peroxides, devised as kinetic probes for the heterogeneous electron transfer (ET), are studied using heterogeneous and homogeneous electrochemical techniques. The peroxides react by concerted dissociative ET reduction of the O-O bond. Under heterogeneous conditions, the only products isolated are the corresponding alcohols from a two-electron reduction as has been observed with other dialkyl peroxides studied to date. However, under homogeneous conditions, a generated alkoxyl radical undergoes a rapid beta-scission fragmentation in competition with the second ET resulting in formation of acetone and a benzyl radical. With knowledge of the rate constant for fragmentation and accounting for the diffuse double layer at the electrode interface, the heterogeneous ET rate constant to the alkoxyl radicals is estimated to be 1500 cm s(-1). The heterogeneous and homogeneous ET kinetics of the O-O bond cleavage have also been measured and examined as a function of the driving force for ET, DeltaG(ET), using dissociative electron transfer theory.     ExoMol line lists - III. An improved hot rotation-vibration line list for HCN and HNC

    A revised rotation-vibration line list for the combined hydrogen cyanide (HCN)/hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) system is presented. The line list uses ab initio transition intensities calculated previously and extensive data sets of recently measured experimental energy levels. The resulting line list has significantly more accurate wavelengths than previous ones for these systems. An improved value for the separation between HCN and HNC is adopted, leading to an approximately 25 per cent lower predicted thermal population of HNC as a function of temperature in the key 2000 to 3000 K region. Temperature-dependent partition functions and equilibrium constants are presented. The line lists are validated by comparison with laboratory spectra and are presented in full as supplementary data to the article and at www.exomol.com

    Opportunities for the development of geometrical reasoning in current textbooks in the UK and Japan

    Developing a good model of the school geometry curriculum continues to be one of the most important tasks in curricular design in mathematics. This paper reports on an initial analysis of current best-selling textbooks used in lower secondary schools in Japan and the UK (specifically England and Scotland). The analysis indicates that, following the specification of the mathematics curriculum in these countries, Japanese textbooks set out to develop students’ deductive reasoning skills through the explicit teaching of proof in geometry, whereas comparative UK textbooks tend, at this level, to concentrate on finding angles, measurement, drawing, and so on, coupled with a modicum of opportunities for conjecturing and inductive reasoning. The available research suggests that each approach has its own strengths and weaknesses. Finding ways of capitalising on the strengths and mitigating the weaknesses could prove helpful in formulating new curricular models and designing new student textbooks

All figures including auxiliary figures are available at http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/GROUPS/PHYSICS/PAPERS/HION-2013-07/International audienceMeasurements of differential cross-sections for J/ψJ/\psi production in p+Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV at the LHC with the ATLAS detector are presented. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 28.1 nb1^{-1}. The J/ψJ/\psi mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel over the transverse momentum range 8<pT<308<p_{\mathrm{T}}<30 GeV and over the center-of-mass rapidity range 2.87<y<1.94-2.87<y^{*}<1.94. Prompt J/ψJ/\psi are separated from J/ψJ/\psi resulting from bb-hadron decays through an analysis of the distance between the J/ψJ/\psi decay vertex and the event primary vertex. The differential cross-section for production of nonprompt J/ψJ/\psi is compared to a FONLL calculation that does not include nuclear effects. Forward-backward production ratios are presented and compared to theoretical predictions. These results constrain the kinematic dependence of nuclear modifications of charmonium and bb-quark production in p+Pb collisions
