Current Usage Patterns and Recommended Social Media Practices for Southern Adventist University
abstract: Southern Adventist University is facing a decrease in attendance at alumni chapter meetings, a decrease in submissions for alumni updates section of campus magazine, a decreased/flat-lined enrollment, and flat-lined (and low-level) young alumni donations. Social media is one tool for influencing relationships toward better outcomes. This research utilized two focus groups and two surveys – one each for high school seniors and young alumni; 90 participants in total – to discover what social media usage patterns and user preferences could help guide the university toward a more engaging connection with these different constituent audiences. Results were measured both quantitatively (e.g. social media platform preference) and qualitatively, using thematic analysis to identify what most influences affinity with an online brand.Master's Applied Projec
Family-Centered Perspectives to Improving Care Coordination for Children with Special Health Care Needs
abstract: It is well known that the lack of care coordination in the healthcare system causes numerous problems including cost inefficiency and inconsistent care, specifically for complex pediatric and adult patients. Many pediatric patients have complex medical and social service needs which can be expensive for both the patient’s parents and the general healthcare system. Therefore, it is difficult for the healthcare system to deliver the highest quality care possible, due to the number of appointments that have to be scheduled (with some being out of state), the large volume of physical health records, and overall lack of time parents have to coordinate this care while also caring for themselves and other family members. It is integral to find a more efficient way to coordinate care for these patients, in order to improve overall care, cost efficiency, and outcomes.
A number of stakeholders in Arizona came together to work on this problem over several years. They were funded through a PCORI Eugene Washington Engagement grant to investigators at ASU. This project, Take Action for Arizona's Children through Care Coordination: A Bridge to Action was developed in order to further develop a research agenda and build the network (PCOR). Regional conferences were conducted in Flagstaff, Yuma, Phoenix, and Tucson, as well as a final capstone conference held in Phoenix. At these conferences, frustrations, suggestions, and opinions regarding Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) and navigating the healthcare system were shared and testimonials were transcribed.
This study focused on the capstone conference. The study design was a strategic design workshop; results of the design analysis were analyzed qualitatively using descriptive content analysis. Themes described parent’s common experiences navigating the system, impacts resulting from such experiences, and desires for the care coordination system. Quotes were then grouped into major themes and subthemes for the capstone conference. After these themes were determined, the overarching goals of stakeholders could be assessed, and implementation projects could be described. (abstract
Securing Colombia: An Exploration into the Failures of the Colombian Peace Accords in Relation to the U.S. Foreign Terrorist Organization Designations List
abstract: The Honorable Anthony Blinken
Secretary of State
U.S. Department of State
2201 “C Street NW
Washington, D.C.
Dear Secretary Blinken,
I am writing you to bring to your attention a potential policy solution in regards to the struggled implementation of the Colombian Peace Accords with the FARC Insurgency. This policy brief has been written with extensive research and input from experts in Colombian foreign policy and general foreign and domestic policy alike.
The research has found that due of the current status of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia on the Foreign Terrorists Organization (FTO) Classification list, aid and protections that have been promised to the former members has not been provided, causing a rise in members re-arming themselves against the national Colombian government. This policy brief recommends that the State Department authorize the removal of the FARC from the FTO Classification list in order for U.S. AID and other forms of finance can reach former FARC members and deter them from becoming actively violent once again.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this policy proposal, I look forward to hearing back from your office.
Sincerely,
Kyle Slaughter

Spacebound: Exploring Outer-Space One Step at a Time
abstract: Spacebound is a mobile application that helps people understand astronomical distances by converting their distances walked on Earth to an interstellar scale. To better navigate outer space, the app presents predefined distance scales and journeys with various objects (planets, asteroids, stars) to explore. Spacebound hopes to be a gamified approach for exploring outer space and also an educational app where the user can learn more about objects as they visit them. (abstract
The Voices Behind Robocalls in the Telephone Spam Ecosystem
abstract: The rampant occurrence of spam telephone calls shows a clear weakness of authentication and security in our telephone systems. The onset of cheap and effective voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology is a major factor in this as our existing telephone ecosystem is virtually defenseless by many features of this technology. Our telephone systems have also suffered tremendously from a lack of a proper Caller ID verification system. Phone call spammers are able to mask their identities with relative ease by quickly editing their Caller ID. It will take a combination of unique innovations in implementing new authentication mechanisms in the telephone ecosystem, novel government regulation, and understanding how the people behind the spam phone calls themselves operate.
This study dives into the robocall ecosystem to find more about the humans behind spam telephone calls and the economic models they use. Understanding how the people behind robocalls work within their environments will allow for more insight into how the ecosystem works. The study looks at the human component of robocalls: what ways they benefit from conducting spam phone calls, patterns in how they identify which phone number to call, and how these people interact with each other within the telephone spam ecosystem. This information will be pivotal to educate consumers on how they should mitigate spam as well as for creating defensive systems. In this qualitative study, we have conducted numerous interviews with call center employees, have had participants fill out surveys, and garnered data through our CallFire integrated voice broadcast system. While the research is still ongoing, initial conclusions in my pilot study interview data point to promising transparency in how the voices behind these calls operate on both a small and large scale. Helping High School Students Prep for College
abstract: This thesis project aims to help the AdviseAZ program reach out, guide, and prepare students for college by setting up a podcast to help answer questions and doubts high school students might have about college. A podcast like this would also help school counselors by relieving them of having to give out repetitive information about college, therefore opening time in their schedule to meet with students for in depth help. The podcast will provide episodes with information about college preparation and advice from college students and college representatives. The AdviseAZ podcast will help its partnered high school students between grades 9 through 12. The podcast will be new for AdviseAZ because as a program they have not explored this service idea for the students. It will be framed to be successful using the Bolman and Deal framework guidelines. These frames will allow the AdviseAZ podcast to prosper in a new way. Bolman and Deal's four-frame model has been a transforming business leadership. They use a multidisciplinary approach to management and provide tools for navigating the organization in a terrible circumstance. Organizations can see which of the four frames could draw to their needs for a solution or change. (abstract
Barriers to Refugee Participation in Higher Education: A cross-national solution to enhance English acquisition for refugees in Israel
abstract: In this formative research project, we seek to better understand the general barriers to refugee access to higher education. Using mixed methods research--which included surveys, interviews, and course data--we evaluate the benefits and challenges experienced by refugee students in Israel who are enrolled in Arizona State University's Education for Humanity programs. In the end, this case study resulted in 24 recommend programmatic changes designed to eliminate the barriers that prevent refugee students from accessing and succeeding in higher education. (abstract
