Estimating the SM background for supersymmetry searches: challenges and methods
Supersymmetry features a broad range of possible signatures at the LHC. If R-parity is conserved the production of squarks and gluinos is accompanied by events with hard jets, possibly leptons or photons and missing transverse momentum. Some Standard Model processes also mimic such events, which, due to their large cross sections, represent backgrounds that can fake or hide supersymmetry. While the normalisation of these backgrounds can be obtained from data in dedicated control regions, Monte Carlo simulation is often used to extrapolate the measured event yields from control to signal regions. Next-to-leading order and multi-parton generators are employed to predict these extrapolations for the dominant processes contributing to the SM background: W/Z boson and top pair production in association with (many) jets. The proper estimate of the associated theoretical uncertainties and testing these with data represent challenges. Other important backgrounds are diboson and top pair plus boson events with additional jets that usually are estimated directly using Monte Carlo simulation. The talk presents the challenges and methods employed by ATLAS to determine backgrounds and uncertainties in supersymmetry searches
Search for squarks and gluinos using final states with jets and missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector in 20 fb-1 of TeV pp collisions
A search for squarks and gluinos in final states containing jets, missing transverse momentum and no high-pt electrons or muons is presented. The data were recorded in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment in TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, with a total integrated luminosity of 20 fb−1

Search for Higgs and Z Boson Decays to J/ψγ and (nS)γ with the ATLAS Detector
A search for the decays of the Higgs and Z bosons to J/psi gamma and Upsilon(nS)gamma (n = 1,2,3) is performed with pp collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 20.3 fb(-1) collected at root s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above expected backgrounds and 95% C.L. upper limits are placed on the branching fractions. In the J/psi gamma final state the limits are 1.5 x 10(-3) and 2.6 x 10(-6) for the Higgs and Z boson decays, respectively, while in the Upsilon(1S, 2S, 3S)gamma. final states the limits are (1.3, 1.9, 1.3) x 10(-3) and (3.4, 6.5, 5.4) x 10(-6), respectively
Determination of spin and parity of the Higgs boson in the decay channel with the ATLAS detector
See paper for full list of authors – 42 pages plus author list + cover pages (59 pages total), 19 figures, 9 tables, submitted to The European Physical Journal C, All figures are available at https://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/GROUPS/PHYSICS/PAPERS/HIGG-2013-14/International audienceStudies of the spin and parity quantum numbers of the Higgs boson in the final state are presented, based on proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb at a centre-of-mass energy of TeV. The Standard Model spin-parity hypothesis is compared with alternative hypotheses for both spin and CP. The case where the observed resonance is a mixture of the Standard-Model-like Higgs boson and CP-even () or CP-odd () Higgs boson in scenarios beyond the Standard Model is also studied. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model prediction and limits are placed on alternative spin and CP hypotheses, including CP mixing in different scenarios
Observation and measurements of the production of prompt and non-prompt J/psi mesons in association with a Z boson in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The production of a Z boson in association with a J/psi meson in proton-proton collisions probes the production mechanisms of quarkonium and heavy flavour in association with vector bosons, and allows studies of multiple parton scattering. Using 20.3 fb(-1) of data collected with theATLAS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at root s = 8 TeV, the first measurement of associated Z + J/psi production is presented for both prompt and non-prompt J/psi production, with both signatures having a significance in excess of 5 sigma. The inclusive production cross-sections for Z boson production (analysed in mu(+) mu(-) or e(+) e(-) decay modes) in association with prompt and non-prompt J/psi (-> mu(+) mu(-)) are measured relative to the inclusive production rate of Z bosons in the same fiducial volume to be (36.8 +/- 6.7 +/- 2.5) x 10(-7) and (65.8 +/- 9.2 +/- 4.2) x 10(-7) respectively. Normalised differential production cross-section ratios are also determined as a function of the J/psi transverse momentum. The fraction of signal events arising from single and double parton scattering is estimated, and a lower limit of 5.3 (3.7) mb at 68 (95)% confidence level is placed on the effective cross-section regulating double parton interactions.ATLAS Collaboration, for complete list of authors see http://dx.doi.org/10.1140/epjc/s10052-015-3406-9</p
Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry parameter αb and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Λb0 →J /ψ Λ0 with the ATLAS detector
A measurement of the parity-violating decay asymmetry parameter, αb, and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Λb0→J/ψ(μ+μ-) Λ0(pπ-) is reported. The analysis is based on 1400 Λb0 and Λ̄b0 baryons selected in 4.6fb-1 of proton-proton collision data with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. By combining the Λb0 and Λ̄b0 samples under the assumption of CP conservation, the value of αb is measured to be 0.30±0.16(stat)±0.06(syst). This measurement provides a test of theoretical models based on perturbative QCD or heavy-quark effective theory
Measurement of the CP-violating phase φs in B0s → J/ψφ decays in ATLAS at 13 TeV
A measurement of the B0
s → J/ψφ decay
parameters using 80.5 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected with the ATLAS detector from 13 TeV proton–proton
collisions at the LHC is presented. The measured parameters include the CP-violating phase φs, the width difference
Δ Γs between the B0
s meson mass eigenstates and the average decay width Γs. The values measured for the physical
parameters are combined with those from 19.2 fb−1 of 7 and
8 TeV data, leading to the following:
φs = −0.087 ± 0.036 (stat.) ± 0.021 (syst.) rad
ΔΓs = 0.0657 ± 0.0043 (stat.) ± 0.0037 (syst.) ps−1
Γs = 0.6703 ± 0.0014 (stat.) ± 0.0018 (syst.) ps−1
Results for φs and ΔΓs are also presented as 68% confidence level contours in the φs–ΔΓs plane. Furthermore the
transversity amplitudes and corresponding strong phases are
measured. φs and ΔΓs measurements are in agreement with
the Standard Model predictions
Measurement of the and production cross sections in multilepton final states using 3.2 fb of collisions at = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
See paper for full list of authors - 22 pages plus author list + cover page (40 pages total), 8 figures, 5 tables. Submitted to Eur. Phys. J. C. All figures including auxiliary figures are available at http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/GROUPS/PHYSICS/PAPERS/TOPQ-2015-22/International audienceA measurement of the and production cross sections in final states with either two same-charge muons, or three or four leptons (electrons or muons) is presented. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb. The inclusive cross sections are extracted using likelihood fits to signal and control regions, resulting in pb and pb, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions
