Systems Approach to the Concept of Environment
Author Institution: Department of Zoology and Institute of Ecology, University of GeorgiaA systems theory of environment formulates causal interactions between things, including organisms, and their environments in terms of four system theoretical abstract objects. Creaons receive stimuli and implicitly create input environments. Genons react to received causes and generate potential output environments as effects. A holon represents the combined input-output model of an entity consisting of a creaon and a genon. An environ is a creaon and its corresponding input environment, or a genon and its related output environment. The theory is presented in terms of three propositions that: (1) recognize two distinct environments (input and output) associated with things, (2) establish things and their environments as units (environs) to be taken together, and (3) partition systems into input and output environs associated with intrasystem creaons and genons, respectively
Initially confidential, Hervé Guibert’s work was revealed to the general public with the publication of À l’ami qui ne m’a pas sauvé la vie in 1990. The confession of his illness and the indiscretions about Michel Foucault’s life made the writer a media phenomenon, and there were few literary pages in French and French-speaking weeklies and dailies that did not report on this novel. However, the treatment of the novel in the newspapers goes beyond the simple literary debate and is crossed by moral and ethical considerations. More than ten years later, in 2001, Le Mausolée des amants, the writer’s diary, appeared posthumously. This shorter media period, circumscribed to this single publication, really gives us a purely critical view, detached from the emotional impact of the author’s illness and imminent death. A more distant view, therefore, but also, perhaps, more accurate in that it focuses more on the work of an author than on the author of a work. It is these two periods of reception of Hervé Guibert’s work that the present article wishes to examine, in order to study the way in which critics seize upon subversive texts that destabilise the bourgeois order and the political correctness
Branching fraction and CP asymmetry of the decays B+→K0Sπ+ and B+→K0SK+
An analysis of B+ → K0

ABC of Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is a field of thought, learning, research and endeavour, which has entrenched itself in the 21st century. This book is certainly very very far from being the be-all and end-all of knowledge about sustainability and sustainable development, as readers will appreciate. This modest effort is something which I hope provides some food for thought…and then hopefully, purposeful action. This book is about 90 pages long, and is split up into 9 chapters, and dwells on the different aspects of sustainable development and the challenges associated with integrating these so that development is truly and holistically sustainable….Chapters begin with Learning Objectives which at once tells the reader what to expect from it, and some Exercises at the end, which one may wish to attempt, en route. As Prof Genon Giuseppe from Turin, Italy, in the Foreword to the book, says, ‘This book is useful to university curricula, aimed at grooming professionals capable of considering all the aspects of sustainable development and of course, can very well be integrated into a host of academic disciplines, as the author has pointed out in one of the chapters.’As Dr Håvard Bergsdal from Trondheim, Norway, says, in his review comments, ‘The book makes for good reading and serves as a useful summary for readers who are new to the topic of sustainability.’</p
A European Bargain: Investing in CEEC Health. CEPS Task Force Reports No. 37, 1 September 2001
Focusing on the process of transition in Central and Eastern Europe, this report looks at health as an issue of enlargement from an economic perspective. The report argues that health is of strategic importance for the success of enlargement and is directly relevant to the future economic development of the candidate countries and to the social and financial sustainability of that development
First observation of the decay Bs0→K*0K*0
The first observation of the decay B0s→K∗0K∗0 is reported using 35 pb−1 of data collected by LHCb in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A total of 49.8±7.5 B0s→(K+π−)(K−π+) events are observed within ±50 MeV/c2 of the B0s mass and 746 MeV/c2 < mKπ < 1046 MeV/c2, mostly coming from a resonant B0s→K∗0K∗0 signal. The branching fraction and the CP-averaged K∗0 longitudinal polarization fraction are measured to be B(B0s→K∗0K∗0)=(2.81±0.46(stat.)±0.45(syst.)±0.34(fs/ fd))×10−5 and fL =0.31±0.12(stat.)±0.04(syst.)
PARAMETRIC ESTIMATION OF DIFFUSION PROCESSES SAMPLED AT FIRST EXIT TIME
This paper introduces a family of recursively defined estimators of the parameters of a diffusion process. We use ideas of stochastic algorithms for the construction of the estimators. Asymptotic consistency of these estimators and asymptotic normality of an appropriate normalization are proved. The results are applied to two examples from the financial literature; viz., Cox-Ingersoll-Ross' model and the constant elasticity of variance (CEV) process illustrate the use of the technique proposed herein.Continuous time Markov processes, discrete time sampling, diffusions, interest rate models, stochastic algorithms.
