    No full text

Ecuador is known in the world of letters for more than one writer of continental renown, among them being José Joaquín Olmedo, Juan León Mera, Juan Montalvo, Jorge Carrera Andrade, Alfredo Pareja Diez-Canseco, and Jorge Icaza. Critics, in general, have rated the last as the greatest of the indigenist writers of Ecuador as well as one of the most outstanding novelists of the Indian theme in all of Hispanic America. Nevertheless, the literary activity of this Ecuadorian writer is not restricted exclusively to the novel as a genre, nor to the Indian as theme. Theater, short story and novel constitute the complete scope of his literary, political and social concerns. Furthermore, he is equally preoccupied with the mestizo--for him the keystone of Latin American society--as he is with the tragedy of the aborigine. Jorge Icaza was initiated into the field of letters as an actor and theatrical writer, winning widespread applause on the national scene. Seven pieces, aside from his numerous roles as an actor, testify to his labor in this field. They are, in chronological order: El intruso (1928), La comedia sin nombre (1929), Por el viejo (1929), ¿Cuál es? (1931), Como ellos quieren (1931), Sin sentido (1932), and Flagelo (1936). The first three pieces reveal strong influence of the Spanish theater of customs and of French vaudeville, while the latter reflect equally his intellectual preoccupations and his political-social tendencies. In the last work, Icaza shows himself to be a true artist of agitation, both in his own society and in that of Spanish America in general. The short story and the novel are the tribunal for those preoccupations. Two collections of short stories, Barro de la Sierra (1933), and Seis relatos (1952)--as well as Viejos cuentos (1954), a reconstruction of some of them together with assorted others--are his contributions to the former genre. Huasipungo (1934), En las calles (1935), Cholos (1938), Media vida deslumbrados (1942), Huairapamushcas (1948), and El chulla Romero y Flores (1958), give testimony to his novelistic activity. In the first chapter of this thesis the writer and the genesis of his literary work are presented, showing how the work was shaped by circumstantial reality and tied strongly to the author\u27s personality. In the following chapter, Icaza\u27s theatrical work is studied in detail, emphasizing the techniques employed, as well as the Freudian and Marxist preoccupations of the author together with his rebellious call for social justice and respect for human dignity. The next chapter is dedicated to the detailed analysis of each of the stories which make up the two principal collections, as well as the author\u27s social protest on behalf of the Indian, the mestizo, and the deprived proletariat; that is to say, his well known leftist militancy, especially notable in Barro de la Sierra. The following four chapters deal with Icaza\u27s novels. Particular emphasis has been placed on the study of the disputed novel, Huasipungo, one of Latin America\u27s greatest allegations in favor of the Indian. Finally, in the last chapter, the conclusions are presented, according to which Icaza emerges not only as one of the greatest defenders of the Indian, but also as the novelist of the mestizo, the common man of America oppressed by infinite problems, but in full march toward the realization of his destiny. The present study embraces the socio-political, as well as the literary values of Icaza\u27s works. The author is perceived as a talented artist deeply committed to his own society and endowed with a three-fold mission eminently, though not exclusively, his own. By virtue of this triple impact, Icaza stands as one of the great names in twentiethcentury Latin American letters

Interrelated Factors Affecting Quantitative Reasoning Scores on the 2016 Saber Pro for Students in Conflict Zones

    No full text
Given the recent peace accords and all of the processes undergone due to the post-conflict, it is necessary to investigate the state of education to meet the challenges that accompany these changes. It is thus pertinent to study the factors that coincide with student performance (in Saber Pro exams, the components of critical reading, quantitative reasoning, citizen competencies, and English) for students who live in municipalities immersed in the conflict and who took the exams in 2016. Based on linear hierarchical models, variables are analyzed regarding the student, the institute (university of study) and the region, thus providing an account of the aspects that influence the results obtained. From previous studies, it has been ascertained that variables related to the student and the institute are determinants for performance. As such, this study will examine the coincidence of variables concerning the area of residence, in addition to those related to student and university, that affect academic performance

Funded by SCOAP3 / License Version CC BY 4.0.Dijet production has been measured in pPb collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV . A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 nb −1 was collected using the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dijet transverse momentum balance, azimuthal angle correlations, and pseudorapidity distributions are studied as a function of the transverse energy in the forward calorimeters ( E 4<|η|<5.2 T ). For pPb collisions, the dijet transverse momentum ratio and the width of the distribution of dijet azimuthal angle difference are comparable to the same quantities obtained from a simulated pp reference and insensitive to E 4<|η|<5.2 T . In contrast, the mean value of the dijet pseudorapidity is found to change monotonically with increasing E 4<|η|<5.2 T , indicating a correlation between the energy emitted at large pseudorapidity and the longitudinal motion of the dijet frame. The pseudorapidity distribution of the dijet system in minimum bias pPb collisions is compared with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions obtained from both nucleon and nuclear parton distribution functions, and the data more closely match the latter

Funded by SCOAP3 / License Version CC BY 4.0.Measurements are reported of the WZ and ZZ production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at s √ =8 TeV in final states where one Z boson decays to b-tagged jets. The other gauge boson, either W or Z, is detected through its leptonic decay (either W→eν , μν or Z→e + e − , μ + μ − , or νν ¯ ). The results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.9 fb −1 collected with the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measured cross sections, σ(pp→WZ)=30.7±9.3(stat.)±7.1(syst.)±4.1(th.)±1.0(lum.)pb and σ(pp→ZZ)=6.5±1.7(stat.)±1.0(syst.)±0.9(th.)±0.2(lum.)pb , are consistent with next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics calculationsBMWF and FWF (Austria); FNRS and FWO (Belgium); CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, and FAPESP (Brazil); MES (Bulgaria); CERN; CAS, MoST, and NSFC (China); COLCIENCIAS (Colombia); MSES and CS (Croatia); RPF (Cyprus); MoER, SF0690030s09 and ERDF (Estonia); Academy of Finland, MEC, and HIP (Finland); CEA and CNRS/IN2P3 (France); BMBF, DFG, and HGF(Germany);GSRT(Greece);OTKAand NIH(Hungary);DAEand DST (India); IPM (Iran); SFI (Ireland); INFN (Italy); NRF and WCU (Republic of Korea); LAS (Lithuania);MOE and UM(Malaysia); CINVESTAV, CONACYT, SEP, and UASLP-FAI (Mexico); MBIE (New Zealand); PAEC (Pakistan); MSHE and NSC (Poland); FCT (Portugal); JINR (Dubna); MON, RosAtom, RAS and RFBR (Russia); MESTD (Serbia); SEIDI and CPAN (Spain); Swiss Funding Agencies (Switzerland); NSC (Taipei); ThEPCenter, IPST, STAR and NSTDA(Thailand); TUBITAK and TAEK (Turkey); NASU and SFFR (Ukraine); STFC (United Kingdom); DOE and NSF (USA)

Funded by SCOAP3 / License Version CC BY 4.0.A study of color coherence effects in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7TeV is presented. The data used in the analysis were collected in 2010 with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. Events are selected that contain at least three jets and where the two jets with the largest transverse momentum exhibit a back-to-back topology. The measured angular correlation between the second- and third-leading jet is shown to be sensitive to color coherence effects, and is compared to the predictions of Monte Carlo models with various implementations of color coherence. None of the models describe the data satisfactorily.BMWF and FWF (Austria); FNRS and FWO(Belgium); CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, and FAPESP (Brazil);MES (Bulgaria); CERN; CAS, MoST, and NSFC (China); COLCIENCIAS (Colombia); MSES (Croatia); RPF(Cyprus); MoER, SF0690030s09 and ERDF (Estonia); Academy of Finland, MEC, and HIP (Finland); CEA and CNRS/IN2P3 (France); BMBF, DFG, and HGF (Germany); GSRT (Greece); OTKA and NIH (Hungary); DAE and DST (India); IPM (Iran); SFI (Ireland); INFN (Italy); NRF and WCU (Republic of Korea); LAS (Lithuania); CINVESTAV, CONACYT, SEP, andUASLPFAI (Mexico); MBIE (New Zealand); PAEC (Pakistan); MSHE and NSC (Poland); FCT (Portugal); JINR (Dubna); MON, RosAtom, RAS and RFBR(Russia);MESTD (Serbia); SEIDI and CPAN(Spain); Swiss Funding Agencies (Switzerland); NSC (Taipei); ThEPCenter, IPST, STAR and NSTDA (Thailand); TUBITAK and TAEK (Turkey); NASU (Ukraine); STFC (United Kingdom); DOE and NSF (USA)
