Radiation tolerant fiber optic humidity sensors for High Energy Physics applications
This work is devoted to the development of fiber optic humidity sensors to be applied in high-energy physics applications and in particular in experiments currently running at CERN. The high radiation level resulting from the operation of the accelerator at full luminosity can cause serious performance deterioration of the silicon sensors which are responsible for the particle tracking. To increase their lifetime, the sensors must be kept cold at temperatures below 0 C. At such low temperatures, any condensation risk has to be prevented and a precise thermal and hygrometric control of the air filling and surrounding the tracker detector cold volumes is mandatory. The technologies proposed at CERN for relative humidity monitoring are mainly based on capacitive sensing elements which are not designed with radiation resistance characteristic. In this scenario, fiber optic sensors seem to be perfectly suitable. Indeed, the fiber itself, if properly selected, can tolerate a very high level of radiation, optical fiber transmission is insensitive to magnetic field and electromagnetic noise and it is perfectly suited for read-out over very long distances. Although many different approaches to humidity measurements through optical fibers have been reported in literature, no commercial sensor of this family is available on the market, and only a few approaches have proved really conclusive performances for a practical application out of the laboratory environment. In 2011, our multidisciplinary research group has been involved in the development of new generation of relative humidity fiber opticbased sensors at CERN. Investigations were originally concentrated on polyimide-coated Fiber Bragg Gratings and gave for the first time the experimental demonstration of the possibility to use them at low temperatures as well as in presence of strong ionizing radiations. For this reason, this platform has been selected for the hygrometric control of the air in critical areas of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment: 72 fiber optic-based thermo-hygrometers, organized in arrays, have been installed in the detector and are currently providing a full map of temperature and humidity in front of the tracker volume. Furthermore, a second generation of high-sensitivity titanium dioxide-coated Long Period Grating-based humidity sensors has been recently proposed. Preliminary results are very encouraging and are evidencing the strong potentialities of the proposed technology in light of its application in the particles tracking detectors of the future
An updated cool dwarf catalog for the transiting exoplanet survey satellite using Gaia DR2
An undergrad mentee of mine presented results at the meeting in a poster. I am a co-author of the presentation. The abstract is available on ADS: https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2019AAS...23314001C/abstractWe present an updated catalog of cool dwarf stars for the recently launched Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) for the purpose of selecting targets for two-minute cadence observations. At launch, TESS was provided a similar catalog of cool dwarfs whose stellar parameters were approximated using proper motions and — where they existed — archival parallax measurements. Most targets therefore have significant uncertainties. Now, with the highly anticipated Gaia DR2 parallax measurements released in April 2018, we updated stellar parameters where we are able to determine a cross-match with confidence, as well as determined new targets from a cross-match between Gaia and 2MASS. We anticipate delivery to TESS by the end of 2018, at which point it will have completed about one fourth of its mission. With the updated catalog, we hope that TESS will discover Earth-sized and sub-Earth-sized exoplanets around late K and M-dwarf type stars with a higher planet yield. This project was supported in part by the NSF REU grant AST-1757321 and by the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association.Published versio
"Dolgota dnej" di V. Rafeenko. Esplorazioni identitarie di un autore (russofono) ucraino
This article explores the life and prose of Ukrainian author Vladimir Rafeenko (ukr. Volodymyr Rafeyenko, Donetsk, 1969), with a focus on his latest russophone novel, Dolgota dnei [The Length of Days, 2017]. Rafeenko’s personal and professional trajectory is examined in its complex dialogue with the Russian and Ukrainian sociopolitical contexts, in order to highlight the close interrelation between extra-literary factors, identity reflection and linguistic practices in the author’s literary experience. Specifically, Dolgota dnei is interpreted as a manifesto of the national consciousness developed by the author following the outbreak of the conflict in Donbas. In the novel, Rafeenko deconstructs the linguistic determinism promoted by political discourse, proposing an alternative perspective on Russian language and culture and a new, civic and multilingual conception of ‘Ukrainianness’
Gaia Data Release 3: Mapping the asymmetric disc of the Milky Way
35 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in A&A special Gaia DR3 issue. V2: abstract completed. V3: complete author list and link to data: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1yOJPjYmM7QK5XVsqaiSOTuwDQNti2LlZInternational audienceWith the most recent Gaia data release the number of sources with complete 6D phase space information (position and velocity) has increased to well over 33 million stars, while stellar astrophysical parameters are provided for more than 470 million sources, in addition to the identification of over 11 million variable stars. Using the astrophysical parameters and variability classifications provided in Gaia DR3, we select various stellar populations to explore and identify non-axisymmetric features in the disc of the Milky Way in both configuration and velocity space. Using more about 580 thousand sources identified as hot OB stars, together with 988 known open clusters younger than 100 million years, we map the spiral structure associated with star formation 4-5 kpc from the Sun. We select over 2800 Classical Cepheids younger than 200 million years, which show spiral features extending as far as 10 kpc from the Sun in the outer disc. We also identify more than 8.7 million sources on the red giant branch (RGB), of which 5.7 million have line-of-sight velocities, allowing the velocity field of the Milky Way to be mapped as far as 8 kpc from the Sun, including the inner disc. The spiral structure revealed by the young populations is consistent with recent results using Gaia EDR3 astrometry and source lists based on near infrared photometry, showing the Local (Orion) arm to be at least 8 kpc long, and an outer arm consistent with what is seen in HI surveys, which seems to be a continuation of the Perseus arm into the third quadrant. Meanwhile, the subset of RGB stars with velocities clearly reveals the large scale kinematic signature of the bar in the inner disc, as well as evidence of streaming motions in the outer disc that might be associated with spiral arms or bar resonances. The process of variation in Bohumil Hrabal's writing
(EN) The doctoral thesis Varianta v poetice Bohumila Hrabala [The process of variation in Bohumil Hrabal's poetics] studies the creative process of writing variants, which the author employed in the whole of his literary production. The main theoretical focus of the thesis is the concept of semantic "openness" introduced by Italian semiotician Umberto Eco (1932-2016) as the possibility of inter preting a literary work on the basis of the aestetic information (i.e. the formal construction) of the text. A further elaboration of Eco's concept is to be found in a case study conducted by Michael Špirit (1965-) on one text written by Hrabal in the 50s and presented by Špirit as an example of a concluded text yet open in meaning, and its variant published in the 60s, which according to Špirit has the features of an open text, but is semantically closed. Through the textual analysis of three groups of variant texts written by Hrabal, the thesis argues the development of the process of variation from texts written in the 50s towards the semantic closed ness of their variants published in the 60s (epos Krásná Poldi- the short story Krásná Poldi; short stories Kain and Fádní stanice-novella Ostře sledované vlaky-short story Legenda o Kainovi), whi le demonstrating the opposite direction of the same process..
Homegardens in northestern Portugal: Former features, roles, gendered knowledge and practices
This study describes general homegardens former features and primary functions in a protected rural area of the North-eastern Portugal, the Natural Park of Montesinho, and focuses on fundamental socio-cultural roles intertwined with economic and ecological purposes registered during a three year period, from 2002 to 2005, using ethnographic methodologies. The gendered nature of local homegardens is also discussed: former homegardens used to be female domains managed according to female values and ideals. Thus, gendered knowledge and women’s intentions and practices are reported throughoutthe text.Homegarden practices have maintained for a long time traditional knowledge, local culture and techniques and plant varieties. The complex structure and
intertwined roles of Montesinho homegardens have been neglected by research and rural development professionals, perhaps because women, who were the primary experts and knowledge holders, were often marginalised. Changes in rural societies and the modernisation of lifestyles have affected homegardens’ relevance, roles and management and have influenced gardeners’ behaviour, the persistence and transmission of traditional knowledge and homegardens prevalence as important garden sites. However, some participants considered that with new economic opportunities such as agritourism and organic produce, and the limited alternatives in ruralareas, that situation could reverse in the medium term. In this instance, transmission of homegardening knowledge and practice would be vital.
As recentes oportunidades e alternativas previstas para as zonas rurais (i.e. agroturismo, produtos
biológicos e de denominação de origem) podem reverter esta situação a médio prazo. Nesse caso, para recuperar algumas das funções dos homegardens será

THE GAIA-ESO SURVEY: METAL-RICH BANANAS IN THE BULGE
We analyze the kinematics of ∼2000 giant stars in the direction of the Galactic bulge, extracted from the Gaia-ESO survey in the region − 10 ° ≲ ℓ ≲ 10 ° and − 11 ° ≲ b ≲ − 3 ° . We find distinct kinematic trends in the metal-rich ( [ M / H ] > 0 ) and metal-poor ( [ M / H ] < 0 ) stars in the data. The velocity dispersion of the metal-rich stars drops steeply with latitude, compared to a flat profile in the metal-poor stars, as has been seen previously. We argue that the metal-rich stars in this region are mostly on orbits that support the boxy–peanut shape of the bulge, which naturally explains the drop in their velocity dispersion profile with latitude. The metal-rich stars also exhibit peaky features in their line of sight velocity histograms, particularly along the minor axis of the bulge. We propose that these features are due to stars on resonant orbits supporting the boxy–peanut bulge. This conjecture is strengthened through the comparison of the minor axis data with the velocity histograms of resonant orbits generated in simulations of buckled bars. The “banana” or 2:1:2 orbits provide strongly bimodal histograms with narrow velocity peaks that resemble the Gaia-ESO metal-rich data
The Gaia Guerrilla by Jack Kerouac
On the road, The subterraneans and Visions of Cody from three angular movements - to escape, to find and to expand - considered here as crucial for each respective work, as well as to the relation between them and the evolution of the process of literary creation of this writer. In it, the various techniques selected by Kerouac in their search for a new language are first problematized. In comparing the three works, the uses of the Spontaneous Prose, conceived by the author himself, as well as the technique of sketches, adopted later, become sharper, and he considerably expands his procedures, reaching its maximum expression in Visions of Cod
Considering the wide and various kinds of studies dedicated to the case of the “blessed” Simone from Trento (1475), it stood out the lack of information about one of the most important actors of this story: Giovanni Mattia Tiberino from Brescia, author of the “Passio beati Simonis tridentini”, that is the text which established the literary success of these events.
For a long time the only interest for this character was related to his role in defence of Simonino’s case, and this interest never crossed the borders of local erudition; in this way it was not possible to have a full image of his figure as a man and as a scholar. This thesis aims to define better his biographical and cultural outlines, in order to show all the different faces of his complex profile as a man of letters and scholar.
This thesis is composed by three chapters: the first one is about Tiberino’s life and works, and it outlines a complete and documented biography. The second one comprehends census and cataloguing of all attestations, manuscripts and printed editions of works related to Simone from Trento; it also shows the extent of their spreading and the manners of their circulation. The third is dedicate to the Passio’s edition, with enclosed an critical apparatus and a commentary
