Abstract : This thesis deals with experimental investigations on the effects of the addition of the electrolytic salts cesium chloride (CsCl) and calcium chloride (CaCl2), on structures, shapes and sizes of the micellar aggregates found in homogeneous liquid-crystalline phases of the ammonium pentadecafluorooctanoate and water binary mixtures (APFO/H2O). Combined experimental techniques, such as polarizing optical microscopy, viscometry, Abbe refractometry, optical transmittance with laser light, turbidity, x-ray diffraction and the use of a method of direct observation by a system specially built for determination of optical properties / thermodynamics, show that the addition of CsCl to the binary system APFO/H2O greatly influences the phases, quenching the micellar nematic phase and producing new types of structures, size and form of the micellar aggregates at high concentrations of APFO and CsCl. At low APFO and high CsCl concentrations, new structures are formed and identified as polymorphic vesicular structures, multilayers (multiple bilayers) and monolayers (single bilayer) having sizes that reach up to 120 ìm in diameter and, therefore, nominated the "giant vesicles". These vesicular aggregates (sphericals and cylindricals) are promoted in the solution spontaneously, simply by the effect of the CsCl added, that is, no special technique is needed to promote their formation. Vesicle's formation is surprising once the molecules of the surfactant APFO are anionics and have single carbon tails

Diasporas and democratization in the post-communist world

If diaspora communities are socialized with democratic values in Western societies, they could be expected to be sympathetic to the democratization of their home countries. However, there is a high degree of variation in their behavior. Contrary to the predominant understanding in the literature that diasporas act in exclusively nationalist ways, this article argues that they do engage with the democratization of their home countries. Various challenges to the sovereignty of their homelands explain whether diasporas involve with procedural or liberal aspects of democratization. Drawing evidence from the activities of the Ukrainian, Serbian, Albanian and Armenian diasporas after the end of communism, I argue that unless diasporas are linked to home countries that enjoy both international legal and domestic sovereignty, they will involve only with procedural aspects of democratization. Diasporas filter international pressure to democratize post-communist societies by utilizing democratic procedures to advance unresolved nationalist goals

The pebbles/boulders size distributions on Sais: Rosetta’s final landing site on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko

International audienceBy using the imagery acquired by the Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System Wide-Angle Camera (OSIRIS WAC), we prepare a high-resolution morphological map of the Rosetta Sais final landing site, characterized by an outcropping consolidated terrain unit, a coarse boulder deposit and a fine particle deposit. Thanks to the 0.014 m resolution images, we derive the pebbles/boulders size-frequency distribution (SFD) of the area in the size range of 0.07–0.70 m. Sais’ SFD is best fitted with a two-segment differential power law: the first segment is in the range 0.07–0.26 m, with an index of −1.7 ± 0.1, while the second is in the range 0.26–0.50 m, with an index of −4.2 +0.4/−0.8. The ‘knee’ of the SFD, located at 0.26 m, is evident both in the coarse and fine deposits. When compared to the Agilkia Rosetta Lander Imaging System images, Sais surface is almost entirely free of the ubiquitous, cm-sized debris blanket observed by Philae. None the less, a similar SFD behaviour of Agilkia, with a steeper distribution above ∼0.3 m, and a flatter trend below that, is observed. The activity evolution of 67P along its orbit provides a coherent scenario of how these deposits were formed. Indeed, different lift pressure values occurring on the two locations and at different heliocentric distances explain the presence of the cm-sized debris blanket on Agilkia observed at 3.0 au inbound. Contrarily, Sais activity after 2.1 au outbound has almost completely eroded the fine deposits fallen during perihelion, resulting in an almost dust-free surface observed at 3.8 au

Ferreira, C., Duarte, C., & Pinto-Gouveia, J. (2011).

The main aim of the research performed and presented in this work is concentrated in the e®ects of the addition of strongs monovalents electrolytic salts, as the ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and the potassium chloride (KCl), in the formation of new structures with liquid-crystallines properties or drastic changes in pre-existing micellar structures in the isotropic, nematic and lamellar phases present in the binary system containing the surfactant pentadeca°uorooctanoate and water (APFO / H2O). We also investigated the in°uence that the salts (NH4Cl and KCl) had on the size and shape of the micellar aggregates as well as their dependency on temperature. Several experimental techniques such as polarizing optical microscopy, direct bulk solution observation, Abbe refractometry, laser light transmission and small angle X ray di®raction were used and from results of these measurements, phase transitions temperatures were determined and, a new structure, formed spontaneously in the solution and named "vesicles", was identi¯ed, i.e., these vesicles appear in the solution simply by the e®ect of the added salt. Theoretical studies using mean ¯eld approximation (Maier-Saupe) in combination with experimentals data were performed and the behavior of the micellar orientational order parameter on temperature, for several samples, obtained
