Update of MRST parton distributions
I present a brief summary of the most important updates in the MRST determinations
of the NLO and NNLO parton distributions. I concentrate on uncertainties
due to input assumptions and possible theoretical corrections, particularly isospin
violation, QED corrections, NNLO and corrections at low Q2 and small x
Quark--parton model with large parton k/sub T/
The quark--parton model is generalized to allow for arbitrarily large parton k/sub T/. Since it is expected that will rise with Q/sup 2/ in (highly virtual) photon mediated processes, this generalization is necessary to restore the applicability of the quark-parton model. By treating k/sub T/ as an essential kinematical variable, the introduction of a new scaling variable z is considered. Together with Bjorken's x variable, a unified kinematical description is given of the four distribution functions: hadron structure functions and jet decay functions for spacelike and timelike photons. The possibility of a simple interpolating universal function is considered. Phenomenological determination of that function is examined in detail. Predictions on R, parton , hadron in jets, etc., are made with the dimuon being used as an input. The usual relation = ..sqrt..2 is shown to be false in the region where k/sub T/ is not small compared to k/sub L/, a situation which prevails in the production of dileptons recently measured. The k/sub T/ distributions for timelike and spacelike cases are shown to be not identical. The model is consistent with nearly all relevant data on virtual photon processes. 38 reference
Measurement of the low-mass Drell-Yan differential cross section at √s = 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector
The differential cross section for the process Z/γ ∗ → ℓℓ (ℓ = e, μ) as a function of dilepton invariant mass is measured in pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV at the LHC using the ATLAS detector. The measurement is performed in the e and μ channels for invariant masses between 26 GeV and 66 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb−1 collected in 2011 and these measurements are combined. The analysis is extended to invariant masses as low as 12 GeV in the muon channel using 35 pb−1 of data collected in 2010. The cross sections are determined within fiducial acceptance regions and corrections to extrapolate the measurements to the full kinematic range are provided. Next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD predictions provide a significantly better description of the results than next-to-leading-order QCD calculations, unless the latter are matched to a parton shower calculation

Small GTPases and BAR domain proteins regulate branched actin polymerisation for clathrin and dynamin-independent endocytosis
Using real-time TIRF microscopy imaging, we identify sites of clathrin and dynamin-independent CLIC/GEEC (CG) endocytic vesicle formation. This allows spatio-temporal localisation of known molecules affecting CG endocytosis; GBF1 (a GEF for ARF1), ARF1 and CDC42\ua0which appear sequentially over 60 s, preceding scission. In an RNAi screen for BAR domain proteins affecting CG endocytosis, IRSp53 and PICK1, known interactors of CDC42 and ARF1, respectively, were selected. Removal of IRSp53, a negative curvature sensing protein, abolishes CG endocytosis. Furthermore, the identification of ARP2/3 complex at CG endocytic sites, maintained in an inactive state reveals a function for PICK1, an ARP2/3 inhibitor. The spatio-temporal sequence of the arrival and disappearance of the molecules suggest a mechanism for a clathrin and dynamin-independent endocytic process. Coincident with the loss of PICK1 by GBF1-activated ARF1, CDC42 recruitment leads to the activation of IRSp53 and the ARP2/3 complex, resulting in a burst of F-actin polymerisation potentially powering scission
Uncertainties of predictions from parton distributions II: theoretical errors
Abstract.We study the uncertainties in parton distributions, determined in global fits to deep inelastic and related hard scattering data, due to so-called theoretical errors. Amongst these, we include potential errors due to the change of perturbative order (NLO NNLO), and effects, absorptive corrections and higher-twist contributions. We investigate these uncertainties both by including explicit corrections to our standard global analysis and by examining the sensitivity to changes of the x,Q2,W2 cuts on the data that are fitted. In this way we expose those kinematic regions where the conventional DGLAP description is inadequate. As a consequence we obtain a set of NLO, and of NNLO, conservative partons where the data are fully consistent with DGLAP evolution, but over a restricted kinematic domain. We also examine the potential effects of such issues as the choice of input parametrisation, heavy target corrections, assumptions about the strange quark sea and isospin violation. Hence we are able to compare the theoretical errors with those uncertainties due to errors on the experimental measurements, which we studied previously. We use W and Higgs boson production at the Tevatron and the LHC as explicit examples of the uncertainties arising from parton distributions. For many observables the theoretical error is dominant, but for the cross section for W production at the Tevatron both the theoretical and experimental uncertainties are small, and hence the NNLO prediction may serve as a valuable luminosity monitor
The Added Value of Enterprise Architecture
Applying architecture implies that it provides added value across an enterprise. Although widely adopted, this claim has only been scarcely investigated, not to mention quantified. This document describes the results of a case study to quantify the effects of applying Enterprise Architecture within a financial institution called FinCom. For confidential information reasons, the name of this company is fictive. The thesis attempts to capture several factors at project level with respect to the application of Enterprise Architecture and its subsequent financial benefits. The study analyzed 40 projects, with regard to time and budget overrun. In order to collect these data, a total of 35 business, enterprise and domain architects were interviewed on their experience with these projects. Among factors taken into account were architecture type, project compliance to architecture and experience of the architect. Consequently, these factors are recorded in hypotheses that relate to the budget and time figures of the project. These hypotheses are incorporated in the 'Architecture Effectiveness Model' and statistically tested with the acquired data.
