    Evidence for the 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying to a pair of τ leptons

The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 19.7 fb−1 at 8 TeV. Each τ lepton decays hadronically or leptonically to an electron or a muon, leading to six different final states for the τ -lepton pair, all considered in this analysis. An excess of events is observed over the expected background contributions, with a local significance larger than 3 standard deviations for m H values between 115 and 130 GeV. The best fit of the observed H → τ τ signal cross section times branching fraction for m H = 125 GeV is 0.78 ± 0.27 times the standard model expectation. These observations constitute evidence for the 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying to a pair of τ leptons

    τ dipole moments via radiative leptonic τ decays

    We propose a new method to probe the magnetic and electric dipole moments of the τ lepton using precise measurements of the differential rates of radiative leptonic τ decays at high-luminosity B factories. Possible deviations of these moments from the Standard Model values are analyzed in an effective Lagrangian approach, thus providing model-independent results. Analytic expressions for the relevant non-standard contributions to the differential decay rates are presented. Earlier proposals to probe the τ dipole moments are examined. A detailed feasibility study of our method is performed in the conditions of the Belle and Belle II experiments at the KEKB and Super-KEKB colliders, respectively. This study shows that our approach, applied to the planned full set of Belle II data for radiative leptonic τ decays, has the potential to improve the present experimental bound on the τ anomalous magnetic moment. On the contrary, its foreseen sensitivity is not expected to lower the current experimental limit on the τ electric dipole moment

    Radiative τ leptonic decays and the possibility to determine the τ dipole moments

    Precise data on radiative leptonic τ decays offer the opportunity to probe the electromagnetic properties of the τ and may allow to determine its anomalous magnetic moment which, in spite of its precise Standard Model prediction, has never been measured. Recently, the branching fractions of the radiative leptonic τ decays (τ → lν¯νγ, with l = e, μ) were measured by the Babar collaboration. These precise measurements, with a relative error of about 3%, must be compared with the branching ratios at the next-to-leading order in QED. Indeed the radiative corrections are expected to be of order 10%, for l = e, and 3%, for l = μ. Here, we present the prediction of the differential decay rates and branching ratios of the radiative leptonic τ decays in the Standard Model at the next-to-leading order and we compare them with the recent Babar measurements. Moreover, wereport on a dedicated feasibility study for the measurements of the τ anomalous magnetic moment at Belle and Belle II

The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb−1 collected in 2011 and 2012. The τ leptons are reconstructed through the decay τ−→π−π+π−ντ. Assuming no contribution from B0→τ+τ− decays, an upper limit is set on the branching fraction B(B0s→τ+τ−)<6.8×10−3 at the 95% confidence level. If instead no contribution from B0s→τ+τ− decays is assumed, the limit is B(B0→τ+τ−)<2.1×10−3 at the 95% confidence level. These results correspond to the first direct limit on B(B0s→τ+τ−) and the world’s best limit on B(B0→τ+τ−)
