Using performance assessment in secondary school mathematics: an empirical study in a Singapore classroom

    No full text
This article reports an exploratory study on using performance assessment in mathematics instruction in a high-performing secondary school in Singapore. An intact mathematics class participated in the study, and received chapter-based performance tasks as intervention during regular mathematics lessons for about one and a half school years. The performance tasks used included authentic and/or open-ended tasks. The students’ academic achievements and attitudes in mathematics were compared with a comparison class that did not receive the intervention. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected, mainly through questionnaire surveys, performance task tests, conventional school exams, and interviews with students and teachers. The results suggest that the students receiving the intervention performed significantly better than their counterparts in solving conventional exam problems, and in general they also showed more positive changes in attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics learning. The students from the experimental class also expressed positive views about the benefits of using performance tasks in promoting their ability in higher order thinking, though no statistically significant difference was detected between the two classes of students in solving unconventional tasks before and after intervention. Overall, the results appear to support teachers’ using contextualised problems in real life situations and open-ended investigations in students’ learning of mathematic

Measurement of the differential and double-differential Drell-Yan cross sections in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV

Measurements of the differential and double-differential Drell-Yan cross sections are presented using an integrated luminosity of 4.5 (4.8) fb−1 in the dimuon (dielectron) channel of proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at s√ = 7 TeV. The measured inclusive cross section in the Z-peak region (60–120 GeV) is σ(ℓℓ) = 986.4 ± 0.6 (stat.) ± 5.9 (exp. syst.) ± 21.7 (th. syst.) ± 21.7 (lum.) pb for the combination of the dimuon and dielectron channels. Differential cross sections dσ/dm for the dimuon, dielectron, and combined channels are measured in the mass range 15 to 1500 GeV and corrected to the full phase space. Results are also presented for the measurement of the double-differential cross section d2σ/dm d|y| in the dimuon channel over the mass range 20 to 1500 GeV and absolute dimuon rapidity from 0 to 2.4. These measurements are compared to the predictions of perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading orders using various sets of parton distribution functions

Betrayal or innovation?: European influence on the literary creation of the contemporary chinese writer Yan Lianke

Many of the texts translated from European languages have played a special role in China’s literary development. The wave of publication of a vast array of foreign books that started in the 1980s and in a sense is ongoing in the present day has had a profound impact on the Chinese writing and literary culture. Yan Lianke (b. 1958) is a paradigmatic example of a Chinese author who publicly acknowledges the influence of foreign literature on his novels. By means of an analysis of the inflections of European literary motives in Yan Lianke’s novels and theoretical works, we can begin to take stock of the scope and modes of this influenceEste trabajo forma parte del proyecto EAU-TBC (HERA.15.066), financiado por el Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad y la Unión Europea a través del programa HERA JRP-U

This is an Accepted Manuscript of a book chapter published by Routledge/CRC Press in The Routledge companion to Yan Lianke on 11 March 2022, available online: https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003144564This chapter aims at providing a comparative analysis of The Four Books, in its translation into five different European languages: English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. All the books used for this study are direct translations from the Chinese original and they provide insights into how translators have been dealing with the different levels of a literary translation. A comparison of the strategies used by the respective translators will be made in order to examine the extent of adjustments adopted to produce an equivalent of the original text in its target language, and thus illustrate how Yan Lianke's novel translated into European languages relates to his original literary writing. Rather than conducting an assessment, this chapter will examine what type of text non-Chinese readers of these languages have at their disposal and to what extent the literary richness of the original Chinese text can be perceived when reading The Four Books in translation. To that end, it is also essential to make an analysis of the original Chinese book and to know in depth the different literary features and levels displayed throughout the nove

Symphony: an inspirational journey from Pedro Páramo to The Flow of Time by Yan Lianke

[EN] Juan Rulfo’s 1955 novel Pedro Páramo is a masterpiece that has captivated writers around the world. Its fragmented structure, the ambiguity between life and death, and its exploration of universal themes of love, revenge, and loneliness have fascinated generations of readers. In the case of Chinese author Yan Lianke, his novel The flow of time clearly shows Rulfo’s influence in terms of the «rewriting» technique and the use of a unique, «magical» narrative style. Through a comparative analysis of these two masterpieces, this study seeks to highlight the transcendence of Pedro Páramo in the development of contemporary Chinese literature and the way Yan Lianke has adapted and reinterpreted Rulfo’s vision in his own creation

The Xungen movement is the context where authors such as Mo Yan are included. In this article, we analyze xungen movement. Also, we analyze one of the most important issue: the death. This article contains two parts: the first dedicate to analyze the recent Chinese Literature and the second where the death is examined. Mo Yan´s Red Sorghum has been taken to show the simbols of Chinese society. Also, to display the symbols of Chinese culture
