[EN] This PhD thesis addresses the development of full-waveform airborne laser scanning (ALSFW) processing and analysis methods to characterize the vertical forest structure, in particular the understory vegetation. In this sense, the influence of several factors such as pulse density, voxel parameters (voxel size and assignation value), scan angle at acquisition, radiometric correction and regression methods is analyzed on the extraction of ALSFW metric values and on the estimate of forest attributes. Additionally, a new software tool to process ALSFW data is presented, which includes new metrics related to understory vegetation. On the other hand, occlusion caused by vegetation in the ALSFW, discrete airborne laser scanning (ALSD) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) signal is characterized along the vertical structure. The author of this PhD thesis is thankful for the financial support provided by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad and FEDER, in the framework of the projects ForeStructure CGL2013-46387-C2-1-R (2013-2016) and FIRMACARTO CGL2016-80705-R (2016-2019). Detailed optical and near-infrared polarimetry, spectroscopy and broad-band photometry of the afterglow of GRB 091018 : polarization evolution

Follow-up observations of large numbers of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, facilitated by the Swift satellite, have produced a large sample of spectral energy distributions and light curves, from which their basic micro- and macro-physical parameters can in principle be derived. However, a number of phenomena have been observed that defy explanation by simple versions of the standard fireball model, leading to a variety of new models. Polarimetry can be a major independent diagnostic of afterglow physics, probing the magnetic field properties and internal structure of the GRB jets. In this paper we present the first high-quality multi-night polarimetric light curve of a Swift GRB afterglow, aimed at providing a well-calibrated data set of a typical afterglow to serve as a benchmark system for modelling afterglow polarization behaviour. In particular, our data set of the afterglow of GRB 091018 (at redshift z = 0.971) comprises optical linear polarimetry (R band, 0.13-2.3d after burst); circular polarimetry (R band) and near-infrared linear polarimetry (Ks band). We add to that high-quality optical and near-infrared broad-band light curves and spectral energy distributions as well as afterglow spectroscopy. The linear polarization varies between 0 and 3per cent, with both long and short time-scale variability visible. We find an achromatic break in the afterglow light curve, which corresponds to features in the polarimetric curve. We find that the data can be reproduced by jet break models only if an additional polarized component of unknown nature is present in the polarimetric curve. We probe the ordered magnetic field component in the afterglow through our deep circular polarimetry, finding P circ < 0.15per cent (2σ), the deepest limit yet for a GRB afterglow, suggesting ordered fields are weak, if at all present. Our simultaneous R- and Ks-band polarimetry shows that dust-induced polarization in the host galaxy is likely negligible

GRB 081203A: Swift UVOT captures the earliest ultraviolet spectrum of a gamma-ray burst

    No full text
We present the earliest ultraviolet (UV) spectrum of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) as observed with the Swift Ultra-Violet/Optical Telescope (UVOT). The GRB 081203A spectrum was observed for 50 s with the UV-grism starting 251 s after the Swift-Burst-Alert-Telescope (BAT) trigger. During this time, the GRB was ≈13.4 mag (u filter) and was still rising to its peak optical brightness. In the UV-grism spectrum, we find a damped Lyα line, Lyβ and the Lyman continuum break at a redshift z= 2.05 ± 0.01. A model fit to the Lyman absorption implies a gas column density of log NH i= 22.0 ± 0.1 cm−2, which is typical of GRB host galaxies with damped Lyα absorbers. This observation of GRB 081203A demonstrates that for brighter GRBs (v≈ 14 mag) with moderate redshift (0.5 < z < 3.5) the UVOT is able to provide redshifts, and probe for damped Lyα absorbers within 4–6 min from the time of the Swift-BAT trigger

In 2022, Caldas ranked third in substance use prevalence among adolescents, that means a big problem. for this reason, is essential to have psychometric instruments that can meansure the severity of substance dependence to give a timely treatment. Natural variability and the effects of anthropogenic climate change require an extensive analysis of variables such as precipitation and the occurrence of anomalies in their spatial and temporal patterns. Given the recent advancement of various artificial intelligence techniques, the objective of this study was to evaluate a fuzzy logic model and an artificial neural network model for estimating precipitation patterns in Bolo river watershed in Valle del Cauca. Data collection and exploratory data analysis were conducted to determine the estimation of precipitation patterns as the categorical target variable for the models (periods: extremely dry, very dry, moderately dry, normal, moderately wet, very wet, and extremely wet). These models focused on monthly precipitation analysis using the monthly Standard Precipitation Index (SPI-1) as a baseline and comparing it with the expected behavior of the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI). A fuzzy inference system was implemented with 3 explanatory variables and 48 implication rules, and several neural network configurations were evaluated, with the best results obtained for the Bayesian regularization training algorithm with an R of 0.8 followed by Levenberg-Marquardt with an R of 0.76. The fuzzy inference system generated results that aligned more closely with the expected outcomes based on the exploratory analysis and the historical behavior of precipitation in the Bolo River. On the other hand, the artificial neural network demonstrated a bias in estimating the type of extreme precipitation event. Dual-Band Reduced-Order Model of an HVDC Link Embedded into a Power Network for EMT Studies

    No full text
This paper presents an approach to obtain reduced-order models for power networks involving power electronic converters (PEC) via the frequency-domain balanced realizations (FDBR) technique. PECs play an essential role in power processing and energy conversion in modern electrical networks, such as the interconnection of renewable generators, HVDC links, and active filters. Integration of PECs into dynamic equivalents needs model-order reduction (MOR) in both low- and high-frequency ranges to account for both slow and fast dynamics due to the network and switching natures. The objective of the FDBR technique is to obtain an internally balanced system, i.e., an equally controllable/observable system, that can be reduced according to its dominant dynamics within the limited frequency bandwidths. This allows accounting for specific band-limited phenomena, such as those generated within a power network caused by PECs, which is the focus of this paper. The results show that faster yet accurate simulations are achieved by reduced-order models through FDBR compared to their full-order counterparts.Intelligent Electrical Power Grid

Presented at SCADA and related technologies for irrigation district modernization, II: a USCID water management conference held on June 6-9, 2007 in Denver, Colorado. This paper describes a flow control regulator application in a diversion dam at the Irrigation District 097, "Lázaro Cardenas", Michoacan, Mexico. A Hydropower Company has started to produce electricity during high demand peak hours releasing the daily volume for irrigation in few hours. Downstream of the storage dam, a Diversion dam stores the water released for power and delivers the water as the irrigation district requires under controlled conditions. Because of these changes in operations at the diversion dam a SCADA systems was installed. The measurement and operation equipment integrated for this application consisted in a SCADAPack, the Probe ultrasonic level sensor, gate position sensor and Horizontal Doppler Current Profiler Channel Master as flow meter. The SCADAPacks at the flow meter and diversion dam were connected by low cost radios called Maxstream. To improve the reliability of the systems redundant equipment was installed on gate position, upstream level sensor. For flow measurement reliability the gate equation, calibrated with the H-ADCP data, was used. As a first step a set of rules were introduced to adjust the gate opening to keep the flow at the head of the main canal constant as the level on the diversion dam change. Since the end of 2006 the system is being transferred from a manual system to an automated system

The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1 recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. With a sample of more than 20 million W → μν events, the statistical precision is greatly improved in comparison to previous measurements. These new results provide additional constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton in the range of the Bjorken scaling variable x from 10−3 to 10−1. These measurements and the recent CMS measurement of associated W þ charm production are used together with the cross sections for inclusive deep inelastic e p scattering at HERA in a next-to-leading-order QCD analysis.
