Timber High-Rise Buildings: Parametric study of the influence of preliminary design parameters on the wind-induced dynamic response of timber high-rise buildings

No full text
The implementation of timber as a load-bearing and stabilizing material for high-rise structures has significantly increased over the last decades due to its potential of reducing the environmental footprint of a structure. Timber structures present a reduced global stiffness and self-weight compared to structures incorporating traditional construction materials, making them prone to high accelerations caused by wind load which affects the structural integrity and user comfort. The acceleration of a structure is a highly complex parameter that must be determined using modal analysis computed by a full-scale finite element model, and is significantly influenced by the magnitude of the wind and vertical loads, as well as the global stiffness of the structure. During the preliminary design phase, it is the responsibility of structural engineers to determine the feasibility of the design and estimate the amount of material required and the distribution of the structural elements. However, this process must be done under a limited amount of time, forcing engineers to rely on rules of thumb and previous experience, which are not currently available for the design of timber high-rise structures. Therefore, the goal of this investigation is to perform a parametric study to determine the influence of various parameters on the design of timber high-rise structures and assist structural engineers in making well-argued decisions during the preliminary design phase. The preliminary design parameters to be studied in the parametric study are: stability system design, connection stiffness and building height. The ranges for the parameters were selected based on extreme values such that clear trends regarding their influence on design could be visualized. This decision limits the design feasibility of some configurations studied in this investigation. The selected stability systems to be studied are glulam frame, CLT core and glulam diagrid. The design verification for each design alternative is done using ULS and SLS criteria provided by Eurocode, as well as a simplified method to estimate the dynamic response of the structure. Finally, the sizing of the structural elements and data collection was done by the implementation of evolutionary algorithms. From the data collected it was determined that the most influential design parameter for the design of timber high-rise structures is the stability system selection given that it determines the global stiffness, which showed a significantly higher influence on the dynamic response of the structure than its self-weight. Moreover, the efficiency of the different stability systems was assessed based on the maximum slenderness they could achieve compared to the amount of material they required. Based on this definition, it was determined that the glulam diagrid is two times more efficient than the CLT core and three times more efficient than the glulam frame. The efficiency of the glulam diagrid is caused by its high global stiffness provided by the triangular configuration of the diagonal elements. These observations prove that the effect of timber’s low density can be mitigated by the implementation of efficient stability systems. The influence of connection stiffness was determined to be directly related to the ability of the stability system to provide lateral stability to the structure. The influence of this parameter on form stable structures such as the CLT core and the glulam diagrid, proved to be nearly negligible, while for non-form stable structures such as the glulam frame it proved to be highly influential. However, it was also determined that the addition of rotational stiffness in the connections causes an exponential increase of the costs and environmental footprint of the structure, which decreases their design feasibility. Finally, the influence of building height on the design is visualized by its effect on the dynamic response of the structure caused by the logarithmic increase of the wind speed as this parameter increases, as well as a decrease of the global stiffness proportional to the efficiency of the stability system.Civil Engineerin

Correspondence between Gen. Plutarco Elías Calles and B.A. José Rubén Romero. The former thanks for the copy of the book “The useful life of Pito Pérez”. José Rubén Romero, Ambassador of Mexico in Cuba, greets Gen. Calles and invites him to visit Havana where he could take a break. He tells that Fernando Torreblanca and his wife Hortensia Elías Calles spent some days there. Gen. Calles replies thanking the offer and apologizing for not being able to visit him due to family issues. He apologizes for the delay of his reply since his friend Gen. José Maria Tapia has been sick. José Rubén Romero congratulates Gen. Calles for his return to Mexico and says he hopes to see him soon in Cuba. “Semblance of a woman. Imitation of speech read by its author at the Mexican Academy of Language” August 1941. It is a biography José Rubén Romero’s mother. Grand Prairie Historical Society BULLETIN Oct 1982 Page 3 BAPTISMAL REGISTER of ST. PETER' S CHURCH, NEW GASCONY, JEFFERSON COUNTY, STATE of ARKANSAS May 28th 1850 So reads the inscription on the flyleaf of a volume of records held by the Archives of the Diocese of Little Rock. This is the sec-ond register for which permission has been granted the Grand Prairie Historical Society by the Rev. Royce R. Thomas, Chancellor of the Diocese, to prepare and publish an index of the recorded acts, (l) Primarily, the volume is the record of the ministry of Father Patrick McGowan to Catholic families in Jefferson and Arkansas coun-ties. Father McGowan was the resident priest at St. Peters for many years. (2) However, the entries disclose that he traveled ex-tensively to serve members of the faith. Those acts not performed at New Gascony axe so indicated. The time span covered is 28 Kay 1850 - ^ Oct 1888, As the flyleaf of the volume indicates, the acts recorded are, for the most part, baptisms--divided almost equally between white and black Catholics, Some marriage are entered but no interments. The same format as used for indexing the first volume of records printed in April 1982 has been followed. Example for baptism: SMYTHE (Smith)/BROWN, John 1 SHYTHB is the surname of the father as entered in the register. (Smith) is this surname as usually found today, BROWN is the maiden name of the mother. John is the given name of the baptised. 1 is the page number on which the record is located. Example for marriage: BROWN, John with SMITH, Mary 10 John Brown is the groom: Mary Smith, the bride; 10, page number. Since surnames are rarely found in the slave baptisms, the al-phabetizing sequence is on the basis of the owners' names. An at-tempt has been made to group children of the same parents. The four columns in the index of slave baptisms are* 1, Owner of the baptised 3» Parents of the baptised 2. Name of the baptised k. Education and Training in Montserrat:A Partially Annotated Bibliography

No full text
This bibliography on “Education and Training in Montserrat” has been specifically prepared for the UWI School of Continuing Studies’ Montserrat Conference (2002). An attempt has been made to be as comprehensive as possible, but because of the weak bibliographical coverage of the literature of the region, important items may have been omitted. This is especially true for policy documents emanating from official sources

Sub-genic intolerance, ClinVar, and the epilepsies: A whole-exome sequencing study of 29,165 individuals

peer reviewedSummary Both mild and severe epilepsies are influenced by variants in the same genes, yet an explanation for the resulting phenotypic variation is unknown. As part of the ongoing Epi25 Collaboration, we performed a whole-exome sequencing analysis of 13,487 epilepsy-affected individuals and 15,678 control individuals. While prior Epi25 studies focused on gene-based collapsing analyses, we asked how the pattern of variation within genes differs by epilepsy type. Specifically, we compared the genetic architectures of severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) and two generally less severe epilepsies, genetic generalized epilepsy and non-acquired focal epilepsy (NAFE). Our gene-based rare variant collapsing analysis used geographic ancestry-based clustering that included broader ancestries than previously possible and revealed novel associations. Using the missense intolerance ratio (MTR), we found that variants in DEE-affected individuals are in significantly more intolerant genic sub-regions than those in NAFE-affected individuals. Only previously reported pathogenic variants absent in available genomic datasets showed a significant burden in epilepsy-affected individuals compared with control individuals, and the ultra-rare pathogenic variants associated with DEE were located in more intolerant genic sub-regions than variants associated with non-DEE epilepsies. MTR filtering improved the yield of ultra-rare pathogenic variants in affected individuals compared with control individuals. Finally, analysis of variants in genes without a disease association revealed a significant burden of loss-of-function variants in the genes most intolerant to such variation, indicating additional epilepsy-risk genes yet to be discovered. Taken together, our study suggests that genic and sub-genic intolerance are critical characteristics for interpreting the effects of variation in genes that influence epilepsy

Exome sequencing of 20,979 individuals with epilepsy reveals shared and distinct ultra-rare genetic risk across disorder subtypes

Identifying genetic risk factors for highly heterogeneous disorders such as epilepsy remains challenging. Here we present, to our knowledge, the largest whole-exome sequencing study of epilepsy to date, with more than 54,000 human exomes, comprising 20,979 deeply phenotyped patients from multiple genetic ancestry groups with diverse epilepsy subtypes and 33,444 controls, to investigate rare variants that confer disease risk. These analyses implicate seven individual genes, three gene sets and four copy number variants at exome-wide significance. Genes encoding ion channels show strong association with multiple epilepsy subtypes, including epileptic encephalopathies and generalized and focal epilepsies, whereas most other gene discoveries are subtype specific, highlighting distinct genetic contributions to different epilepsies. Combining results from rare single-nucleotide/short insertion and deletion variants, copy number variants and common variants, we offer an expanded view of the genetic architecture of epilepsy, with growing evidence of convergence among different genetic risk loci on the same genes. Top candidate genes are enriched for roles in synaptic transmission and neuronal excitability, particularly postnatally and in the neocortex. We also identify shared rare variant risk between epilepsy and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Our data can be accessed via an interactive browser, hopefully facilitating diagnostic efforts and accelerating the development of follow-up studies

Associations of autozygosity with a broad range of human phenotypes

In many species, the offspring of related parents suffer reduced reproductive success, a phenomenon known as inbreeding depression. In humans, the importance of this effect has remained unclear, partly because reproduction between close relatives is both rare and frequently associated with confounding social factors. Here, using genomic inbreeding coefficients (FROH) for >1.4 million individuals, we show that FROH is significantly associated (p < 0.0005) with apparently deleterious changes in 32 out of 100 traits analysed. These changes are associated with runs of homozygosity (ROH), but not with common variant homozygosity, suggesting that genetic variants associated with inbreeding depression are predominantly rare. The effect on fertility is striking: FROH equivalent to the offspring of first cousins is associated with a 55% decrease [95% CI 44–66%] in the odds of having children. Finally, the effects of FROH are confirmed within full-sibling pairs, where the variation in FROH is independent of all environmental confounding
