    Orbital tuning and re-tuning: art and science (abstract of paper presented at AGU Fall Meeting, San Francisco, 6-10 Dec 2002)

    It is difficult to imagine a situation wherein (a) a geological record built up at a constant rate or (b) a geological deposit built up at a rate that was independent of climate. In addition all geological proxies for climate parameters are subject to both observational noise, and variability in their relationship with climate. Hence considerable judgement is needed in first selecting geological records that will be amenable to "tuning" to a record of changing distribution of solar insolation as calculated by an astronomer, and then in carrying out the operation. Tuning a geological record to an incorrect insolation record, or to the wrong time interval in a correct insolation record, or to a simplified "caricature" of the true insolation record can all provide considerable insights in some circumstances. Nevertheless from the point of view of the geological time scale it is important to carry out the procedure correctly, with the best available astronomical data. It is also important that one can utilize the tuning in order to verify the astronomical calculations. We have recently re-tuned a number of records on the basis of the new calculations discussed by Laskar (2001). Astronomical Solutions for Paleoclimates Studies. Eos Trans. AGU, 82(47), Fall Meet. In the Pliocene re-tuning is generally straightforward and uninformative because the astronomical changes are small and the tuning is so unambiguous that little judgement is required. In the Early Miocene and Oligocene the situation is more interesting. During this time available data suggests that the climatic variability is dominated by 41-ky obliquity cycles but attaining a correct tuning requires identification of the weaker precession signal and making use of the longer-term (100-ky and 400-ky) eccentricity modulation. A surprising aspect of the tuning published by us in 1999 was that between 20Ma and 24Ma there was long-term (about 1.1My) modulation of the obliquity signal that matched that predicted; this match broke down in the earlier part of the record.Re-tuning the records for this interval required a slight "stretching" to take account of the fact that 400-ky eccentricity maxima in the Oligocene are around 100ky older than in the previous astronomical solution. This obviously required the addition of a very small number of additional obliquity cycles; thus it was necessary to make a judgement anew regarding the interpretation of each cycle. This in turn enables us to assess the degree of robustness of the tuning. The fact that in the new tuning the amplitude modulation of the obliquity signal in the 20Ma to 24Ma time window still matches the calculated modulation is not surprising since in this time-window the amplitude envelope of obliquity moved back in age to the same extent as the eccentricity signal, as a result of the new calculations. However, the fact that the re-tuned data now demonstrates an amplitude modulation of the obliquity signal that remains in phase with the calculated signal back to 30Ma, despite the fact that the re-tuning did not entail significant re-interpretation of the record, strongly suggests both that the new solution represents an "improvement" and that the coherence with this long-term modulation constitutes a very strong independent validation of this approach to geological time scale development

The relationship between Andrea Hirata as a author with his work entitled Laskar Pelangi was a major topic of discussion. The objectives of this research were to find out the theme of the novel and relationship between Laskar Pelangi novel with Andrea Hirata’s Biography. Descriptive qualitative method was carried out to analyze the data. The source of the data was taken from the novel Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata.In collecting the data, some references related biographical criticism were applied. The data were analyzed by reading the novel, underlining statement of Laskar Pelangi novel that related to Andrea Hirata, analyzing and describing the relationship between Laskar Pelangi novel with Andrea Hirata’s biography. It was concluded that the theme was the compelexity of Ikal’s life , Andrea Hirata was someone who liked to dream in the run of his life.     Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan Resepsi Siswa SMA N 9 Kota Bengkulu terhadap Novel Laskar Pelangi. Penelitian dilaksanakan di SMA N 9 Kota Bengkulu pada tahun ajaran 2009/2010. Metodologi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif. Penelitian ini mengkaji tiga hal penting yaitu mengenai unsur intrinsik, unsur ekstrinsik, dan resepsi bebas. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian resepsi pembaca dalam hal ini siswa-siswi SMA N 9 Kota Bengkulu terhadap Novel Laskar Pelangi Karya Andre Hirata adalah siswa-siswa ini sudah dapat meresepsi novel Laskar Pelangi Karya Andre Hirata dengan baik. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari keberagaman jawaban yang mereka ungkapkan berdasarkan opini mereka masing-masing, baik dari unsur intrinsiknya, unsur ekstrinsiknya, dan unsur bebasnya.     Throughout the history of the Indonesian film industry, the most frequent type of film adaptation produced has been film adaptations of novels. This is because there has always been a great public interest to experience an existing story or narrative in different media or formats. This is so for the adaptation of the novel ‘Laskar Pelangi ‘ with a film of the same title ‘Laskar Pelangi ‘. Then arises the question of who is the creator of a movie from the adaptation of the novel? To answer this question, a deep analysis was conducted on the scope of Intellectual Property Rights, specifically Copyright, for the film ‘Laskar Pelangi’. The juridical normative approach was used with the character perspective specification as it aims to obtain suggestions that could be used to solve a problem. Based on our analysis, an author is entitled to the ownership of their work for the transformation of a story from a novel into another form of media, such as film. The film itself would include the dramatization of the novel and include material changes and arrangements that would generate a new version of the narrative. A writer, as a creator, has been given ownership rights directly by Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 28 of 2014 on Copyright. This suggests that the writer of the novel ‘Laskar Pelangi ‘ as well as its adaptations, Andrea Hirata, can enjoy the results of his work by transferring his economic rights and has the right to create any form of adaptation from his novel. Thus, Andrea Hirata as the writer of the novel ‘Laskar Pelangi’ is the creator of every form of adaptation of his novel, regardless of the parties that create these adaptations. Therefore, Andrea Hirata is the creator of the film ‘Laskar Pelangi ‘ while the director (Riri Riza) and Miles Film & Mizan Production are the Copyright Recipients who would receive the economic rights from the movie ‘Laskar Pelangi’ as given by Andrea HirataDalam sejarah dunia perfilman Indonesia jenis film adaptasi yang paling sering diproduksi yaitu film adaptasi novel. Pengarang/Penulis sebagai Pencipta atas karyanya, hal ini diberikan langsung oleh Undang-Undang Negara Republik Indonesia Nomor 28 Tahun 2014 Tentang Hak Cipta. Penulis novel ‘Laskar Pelangi’ yaitu Andrea Hirata dapat menikmati hasil karyanya dengan melakukan pengalihan hak ekonomi yang dimilikinya.     Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini yaitu: 1) Bagaimanakah konteks nilai karakter religius, jujur, mandiri dan rasa ingin tahu dalam novel Laskar Pelangi karya Andrea Hirata ditinjau berdasarkan kajian mimetik? 2) Bagaimanakah  jenis nilai pendidikan karakter pada unsur intrinsik novel Laskar Pelangi untuk siswa SMP kelas VIII? 3) Bagaimanakah hasil penelitian yang relevan dengan tuntutan bahan ajar bahasa Indonesia Kurikulum 2013 untuk siswa SMP kelas VIII? Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif yaitu dengan memberikan gambaran secara faktual dan akurat mengenai fakta-fakta yang berkaitan dengan: aspek kajian mimetik berupa pencerminan, peniruan, dan pembayangan dalam Novel Laskar Pelangi, jenis nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter dalam Novel Laskar Pelangi, kesesuaian hasil analisis kajian mimetik terhadap nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter dalam Novel Laskar Pelangi  dengan tuntutan bahan ajar Bahasa Indonesia Kurikulum 2013 untuk siswa SMP kelas VIII. Dari proses di atas diperoleh data, bahwa setelah dilakukannya analisis terhadap nilai-nilai karakter menggunakan kajian mimetik, Novel Laskar Pelangi layak dijadikan bahan ajar karena nilai-nilai karakter di dalamnya sudah sesuai dengan tuntutan Kompetensi Dasar yang harus dicapai siswa SMP kelas VIII. Novel Laskar Pelangi dijadikan objek penelitian dalam materi teks ulasan. Kesesuaian tersebut telah dibuktikan dengan melakukan wawancara kepada tiga guru Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia. Hasil wawancara menunjukkan, bahwa nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter dalam Novel Laskar Pelangi sudah relevan dengan tuntutan bahan ajar siswa kelas VIII.     This research had been used stylistics theoretical basis and supported by the theory of semiotics. The purpose of this study is to discuss the metaphor of Laskar Pelangi tetralogy to find the typical writing style of Andrea Hirata�s metaphor, meaning, and functions, as well as frequency of use of Andrea Hirata�s metaphor, including much use of metaphor and the functions. Laskar Pelangi tetralogy includes four novels of Andrea Hirata, Laskar Pelangi, Sang Pemimpi, Edensor, and Maryamah Karpov. Metaphor questioned the comparison between the one with the other as a composition that reflects the expression of the author and cultural social codes including the highly visible nature of tetralogy Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata. If related to the style or the style have been used by Andrea Hirata in his novels, Andrea Hirata has its own style or styles in using metaphor as an expression, a container of ideas, or where his ideas to convey a message at the time of Andrea Hirata creating literary works. Style language of metaphor has a notion to compare something with something else without using the words of comparator circuit. This metaphor figurative language such as comparison, just did not use comparison words, such as, like, like, and so forth. Metaphor is seen as the same thing or worth to something else, which really is not the same. Metaphor consists of two terms or two parts, the term of principal (principal term) and the second term (secondary term). The principal term called the tenor, the second term is called vehicle. Principal term or tenor have mentioned the comparison, while the second term or the vehicle is a thing to compare. For example Arai is a Sacred Hoop, Arai is the principal term, is sacred hoop is the vehicle. In addition to these metaphors were also founded the implicit metaphor and the dead metaphor. The division of metaphor type is based on the Wahab�s theory by dividing of the metaphor to 9, namely: the being metaphor, cosmos, energy, substance, terestrial, object, life, humans, and fauna. The use of metaphor can not be separated by social experience and cultural background of the author. That is, a metaphor that was created by Andrea Hirata is very influenced by his environment, because the author's perception of natural phenomena and social phenomena can not be separated from the state of the environment too. Analysis of the meaning and function of metaphor in Laskar Pelangi tetralogy prove that the use of metaphor pretty much found. Metaphor of life (human) are the hallmark of Laskar Pelangi tetralogy because its presence dominates among other types of metaphor. Metaphor Andrea Hirata show aesthetic function and in particular social and cultural motivations, struggles, and education. Finally, this study concludes that the use of metaphor is quite a lot in the Laskar Pelangi tetralogy in a sequence that occupies most of the frequency Sang Pemimpi, then Maryamah Karpov, Laskar Pelangi, and Edensor. Besides this, also found that the use of metaphor in a novel improve the quality of the novel, so it is not surprising that Laskar Pelangi tetralogy extraordinary acceptable by the reader.     This paper will examine and reflect on the relationship between literature and education, by addressing the issues surrounding the development of the education system in Indonesia through Andrea Hirata's Laskar Pelangi "glasses". Andrea Hirata shows through the novel Laskar Pelangi that education is not a place where one seeks knowledge, but how to live it. Significantly, the most prominent problem discussed in the novel Laskar Pelangi is the theme of education in Indonesia, and the author is interested in seeing this problem through the realities of the ups and downs of education in Indonesia. As for this purpose, the author analyzes the problems to be highlighted by using the genetic-structuralism method. The use of this method is based on the reason that education like what is contained in the novel Laskar Pelangi is a reflection of the reality of education in Indonesia. And in order to understand the issue more clearly, the analysis of the novel will not only look at the educational issues as contained in the novel (intrinsic), but also in terms of their references to the real world of Indonesian education (extrinsic).AbstrakTulisan ini akan meneliti dan merenungkan hubungan antara sastra dan pendidikan, dengan menjurus kepada persoalan di sekitar perkembangan sistem pendidikan di Indonesia melalui “kacamata” Laskar Pelangi karya Andrea Hirata. Andrea Hirata menunjukkan lewat novel Laskar Pelangi bahwa pendidikan bukanlah tempat seseorang menuntut ilmu, tetapi bagaimana menjalaninya. Secara signifikan, masalah yang paling menonjol yang dibicarakan dalam novel Laskar Pelangi adalah tema pendidikan di Indonesia dan penulis tertarik untuk melihat masalah tersebut melalui persoalan kenyataan pasang-surut pendidikan di Indonesia. Adapun untuk tujuan tersebut, penulis melakukan analisis atas masalah yang hendak disoroti dengan menggunakan metode genetik-strukturalisme. Penggunaan metode ini didasarkan pada alasan bahwa pendidikan seperti apa yang terkandung dalam novel Laskar Pelangi adalah refleksi dari suatu realitas pendidikan di Indonesia. Demi memahami persoalan tersebut lebih jelas, maka analisis terhadap novel tersebut tidak hanya dilakukan untuk melihat persoalan pendidikan tersebut seperti apa yang terdapat dalam novel (intrinsik), tetapi juga dalam hal referensinya ke dunia nyata pendidikan Indonesia (ekstirinsik)
