The German Occupation in recent French fiction : an analysis of the literary “mode retro”

    No full text
This thesis attempts to analyse and characterise the mode rétro, the remarkable renewal of interest in the German Occupation of France, which is coloured by an extensive re-evaluation of the period's significance. An introduction places this fashion in its literary, social and historical context, revealing how, from 1940 to 1969, a collective and predominantly Gaullist 'myth' of the Resistance became established, with the result that the national response to invasion was accepted to be one of wide-spread heroism and revolt. Part I studies the reaction to such résistancialisme, showing how this orthodox interpretation of events was undermined and, for many, discredited, and offering explanations of the timing and direction of the new view. Part II focuses on the fiction, memoirs, autobiographies and biographies of the younger authors, those who have no direct adult experience of the années noires. It is suggested that their obvious obsession with absent parent-figures reflects their awareness that the past has been misrepresented and their heritage rendered problematic. Their sole means of escape from this predicament, their only source of emotional relief is seen to lie in the creation of a personal account of the early 1940s running contrary to the prevalent orthodoxy, the fabrication of a 'counter-myth'. It is thus the notion of myth which links the various sections of the survey, and so gives the thesis its overall unity

AMPK activation caused by reduced liver lactate metabolism protects against hepatic steatosis in MCT1 haploinsufficient mice

    No full text
Objective: Hepatic steatosis is the first step leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which represents a major complication of obesity. Here, we show that MCT1 haploinsufficient mice resist to hepatic steatosis development when fed a high fat diet. They exhibit a reduced hepatic capacity to metabolize monocarboxylates such as lactate compared to wildtype mice. Methods: To understand how this resistance to steatosis develops, we used HFD fed wildtype mice with hepatic steatosis and MCT1 haploinsufficient mice to study hepatic metabolism. Results: AMPK is constitutively activated in the liver of MCT1 haploinsufficient mice, leading to an inactivation of SREBP1. Therefore, expression of key transcription factors for lipid metabolism, such as PPARα and γ, CHREB, or SREBP1 itself, as well as several enzymes including FAS and CPT1, was not upregulated in these mice when fed a high fat diet. It is proposed that reduced hepatic lactate metabolism is responsible for the protection against hepatic steatosis in MCT1 haploinsufficient mice via a constitutive activation of AMPK and repression of several major elements involved in hepatic lipid metabolism. Conclusion: Our results support a role of increased lactate uptake in hepatocytes during HFD that, in turn, induce a metabolic shift stimulating SREBP1 activity and lipid accumulation. Tradisi sastera Johor-Riau: Suatu kajian terhadap syair sejarah (The Johor-Riau literary tradition: A study on its historical poems)

    No full text
Tradisi sastera Johor-Riau menyaksikan penghasilan sejumlah besar puisi berbentuk syair. The 19th Century Johor-Riau literary tradition saw the production of large number of poems or narratives in the verse form, known as syair. These syairs are distinguishable in various types; such as romantic syair, religious syair, allusive/didactic and historical syair. Discerning the class of historical syair, one would establish an understanding of a certain narrative found in the text. The narratives are such as those that chronicle the events of a war, court events, marriage, death or voyage of a ruler or prominent member of the court elites. It also includes events in the lives of Chinese personalities in social or political life. Whichever narrative a traditional Malay author chooses, the text and its context would elucidate the implicit intent of the author. This thesis analyzes six historical syair namely; Syair Perang Johor, Syair Kisah Engku Puteri, Syair Sultan Mahmud di Lingga, Syair Perkahwinan Tik Sing, Syair Pangeran Syarif Hasyim and Syair Perjalanan Sultan Lingga dan YTM Riau. All are from the Malay-Riau Archipelago particularly the viceregal court at Pulau Penyengat, produced from 1844 to 1893. Using the conceptual framework of Puitika Sastera Melayu by Muhammad Haji Salleh (2006), this thesis looks into the literary features such as narrative voice, focalization, contexts of production and the significance of historical narrative in these syair. It attempts to investigate the poetics of Malay authors at the advent of the colonial powers in the 20th Century. It also examines the way in which authors of the Johor-Riau literary tradition repond to historical events in their works. This thesis hopes to identify the poetics of each syair and recognises how the author manifests his/her ideas on a particular historical event as a site of remembrance

Hypothalamic Astrocytes Exhibit Glycolytic Features Making Them Prone for Glucose Sensing

    No full text
In the hypothalamus, detection of energy substrates such as glucose is essential to regulate food intake and peripheral energy homeostasis. Metabolic interactions between astrocytes and neurons via lactate exchange have been proposed as a hypothalamic glucose-sensing mechanism, but the molecular basis remains uncertain. Mouse hypothalamic astrocytes in vitro were found to exhibit a stronger glycolytic phenotype in basal conditions than cortical astrocytes. It was associated with higher protein expression levels of the Pyruvate Kinase Isoform M2 (Pkm2) and its more prominent nuclear localization. In parallel, hypothalamic astrocytes also expressed higher levels of the monocarboxylate transporter Slc16a3 (Mct4), which were dependent on Pkm2 expression. The stronger Mct4 expression in hypothalamic versus cortical astrocytes is an intrinsic characteristic, as it was also present after their direct isolation from adult mouse tissue. The high lactate release capacity of hypothalamic astrocytes was demonstrated to depend on the expression of Mct4, but not Mct1. Unlike cortical astrocytes, hypothalamic astrocytes in culture do not respond to glutamate with enhanced glycolysis, but instead, they modulate their lactate production according to glucose concentrations in an AMPK-dependent manner, an effect observed in both mouse and human hypothalamic astrocytes in vitro. Our study shows that hypothalamic and cortical astrocytes are geared to have distinct glycolytic responses to glucose and glutamate, respectively. These results reveal a metabolic specialization of astrocytes in order to fulfill distinct area-specific functions: glucose-sensing in the hypothalamus versus activity-dependent neuronal energetic supply in cortical regions. © 2025 The Author(s). Measurement of high-Q (2) charged current deep inelastic scattering cross sections with a longitudinally polarised positron beam at HERA

    No full text
Measurements of the cross sections for charged current deep inelastic scattering in e+p collisions with a longitudinally polarised positron beam are presented. The measurements are based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 132 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The total cross section is presented at positive and negative values of the longitudinal polarisation of the positron beams. The single-differential cross-sections dσ/dQ2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy are presented for Q2>200 GeV2. The reduced cross-section σ̃ is presented in the kinematic range 200<Q2<60000 GeV2 and 0.006<x<0.562. The measurements agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model. The results are used to determine a lower limit on the mass of a hypothetical right-handed W boson. © 2010 The Author(s)

Study of charged-current ep interactions at Q(2)>200 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA

    No full text
Deep inelastic charged-current reactions have been studied in e+p and e-p collisions at a center of mass energy of about 300GeV in the kinematic region Q2>200GeV2 and x>0.006 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The integrated cross sections for Q2>200GeV2 are found to be {Mathematical expression} and {Mathematical expression}. Differential cross sections have been measured as functions of the variables x, y and Q2. From the measured differential cross sections dσ/dQ2, the W boson mass is determined to be {Mathematical expression}. Measured jet rates and transverse energy profiles agree with model predictions. A search for charged-current interactions with a large rapidity gap yielded one candidate event, corresponding to a cross section of {Mathematical expression} © 1996 Springer-Verlag

Combined inclusive diffractive cross sections measured with forward proton spectrometers in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA

    No full text
A combination of the inclusive diffractive cross section measurements made by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA is presented. The analysis uses samples of diffractive deep inelastic ep scattering data at a centre-of-mass energy √s= 318 Gev where leading protons are detected by dedicated spectrometers. Correlations of systematic uncertainties are taken into account, resulting in an improved precision of the cross section measurement which reaches 6 % for the most precise points. The combined data cover the range 2.5 < Q 2 < 200 GeV 2 in photon virtuality, 0.00035 < xP < 0.09 in proton fractional momentum loss, 0.09 <{pipe}t{pipe}< 0.55 GeV 2 in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and 0.0018 < β <0.816 in β=x/xP, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. © 2012 The Author(s).0H1 and ZEUS CollaborationsSCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Development of ELIP to Assess Physical Literacy for Emerging Adults: A Methodological and Epistemological Challenge

    No full text
Purpose: Following increased interest in physical literacy (PL), development of appropriate tools for assessment has become an important next step for its operationalization. To forward the development of such tools, the objective of this study was to build the foundations of the Évaluation de la Littératie Physique (ELIP), designed to help reduce existing tensions in approaches to PL assessment that may be resulting in a low uptake into applied settings. Methods: We followed two steps: (1) the development of the first version of ELIP by deploying a Delphi method (n = 30); and (2) the modification of items through cognitive interviews with emerging adults (n = 32). Results: The expert consensus highlighted four dimensions of PL to be assessed-physical; affective; cognitive; and social-with new perspectives, including a preference for broad motor tests over fitness. Conclusion: Results offer new insights into the assessment of emerging adults' PL, but ELIP still requires further work concerning validity, reliability, and sensitivity
