QCD tests in collisions at TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC
No full textThe Large Hadron Collider facility at CERN, and in particular the ATLAS detector, have provided a testing ground for high energy physics at a level which couldn't be explored in previous experiments. It has not only increased the centre-of-mass energy to the up to now highest value of TeV but also has had an excellent luminosity performance during these years of data taking. This has been especially important for the discovery of the Higgs boson, as well as for allowing searches of new physics and studies of the properties of, up to now, poorly known final states as production. In this thesis, data taken during the year 2011 have been analyzed to probe the strong sector of the Standard Model. The parton shower and hadronisation models have been tested in this thesis by means of the measurement of jet shapes in final states. Relying on the top-quark decays and the subsequent boson hadronic decays , samples with very high purity of - and light-quark induced jets have been selected. This fact, together with the fine granularity of the ATLAS calorimeter system, has allowed us to compare -jet shapes with those of light jets (ATLAS Collaboration, Eur. Phys. J. C \textbf{73} 2676 (2013)) and to determine the -quark mass from the so-called angular screening effects, clearly visible in these data (J. Llorente and J. C., Nucl. Phys. B \textbf{889} 401 (2014)). Furthermore, -jets are found to be broader than light jets and therefore -jet shapes may be used for tagging purposes. The value of the strong coupling constant at the -pole scale has also been measured in this thesis. This constant plays a key role in our understanding of nature at the subatomic scale, as it determines the strength of gluon radiation, as well as being responsible for the stability of nuclear matter. We have selected a sample of multijet events by demanding the scalar sum of transverse momenta of the two leading jets to be greater than 500 GeV while the transverse momenta of the subleading jets is required to be above 50 GeV. All jets are required to lie in the central part of the calorimeter, i.e. . We have performed a measurement of transverse energy-energy correlations, which are the natural extension of the energy-energy correlation function which was popular in colliders at PETRA-PEP and LEP-SLC energies. We have performed a comparison between the data (ATLAS Collaboration, arXiv:1508.01579 [hep-ex]) with NLO pQCD calculations (A. A., F. B., J. Llorente and W. W., Phys. Rev. D \textbf{86} 114017 (2012)) which allows us to determine \alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1173 \pm 0.0010 \mbox{ (exp.)} ^{+0.0065}_{-0.0026} \mbox{ (theo.)}

Study of Bc+→J/ψDs+ and Bc+→J/ψDs∗+ decays in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
No full textA study of Bc+→J/ψDs+ and Bc+→J/ψDs∗+ decays using 139 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected with the ATLAS detector from s = 13 TeV pp collisions at the LHC is presented. The ratios of the branching fractions of the two decays to the branching fraction of the Bc+→ J/ψπ+ decay are measured: B(Bc+→J/ψDs+)/B(Bc+→J/ψπ+) = 2.76 ± 0.47 and B(Bc+→J/ψDs∗+)/B(Bc+→J/ψπ+) = 5.33 ± 0.96. The ratio of the branching fractions of the two decays is found to be B(Bc+→J/ψDs∗+)/B(Bc+→J/ψDs∗+) = 1.93 ± 0.26. For the Bc+→J/ψDs∗+ decay, the transverse polarization fraction, Γ±±/Γ, is measured to be 0.70 ± 0.11. The reported uncertainties include both the statistical and systematic components added in quadrature. The precision of the measurements exceeds that in all previous studies of these decays. These results supersede those obtained in the earlier ATLAS study of the same decays with s = 7 and 8 TeV pp collision data. A comparison with available theoretical predictions for the measured quantities is presented. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]
Reference Pricing of Pharmaceuticals
No full textWe consider a therapeutic market with potentially three pharmaceutical firms. Two of the firms offer horizontally differentiated brand-name drugs. One of the brand-name drugs is a new treatment under patent protection that will be introduced if the profits are sufficient to cover the entry costs. The other brand-name drug has already lost its patent and faces competition from a third firm offering a generic version perceived to be of lower quality. This model allows us to compare generic reference pricing (GRP), therapeutic reference pricing (TRP), and no reference pricing (NRP). We show that competition is strongest under TRP, resulting in the lowest drug prices (and medical expenditures). However, TRP also provides the lowest profits to the patent-holding firm, making entry of the new drug treatment least likely. Measurement of differential production cross-sections and forward-backward ratio in p+Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector

The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 28.1 nb. The mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel over the transverse momentum range GeV and over the center-of-mass rapidity range . Prompt are separated from resulting from -hadron decays through an analysis of the distance between the decay vertex and the event primary vertex. The differential cross-section for production of nonprompt is compared to a FONLL calculation that does not include nuclear effects. Forward-backward production ratios are presented and compared to theoretical predictions. These results constrain the kinematic dependence of nuclear modifications of charmonium and -quark production in p+Pb collisions
BonFIRE: A multi-cloud test facility for internet of services experimentation
No full textBonFIRE offers a Future Internet, multi-site, cloud testbed, targeted at the Internet of Services community, that supports large scale testing of applications, services and systems over multiple, geographically distributed, heterogeneous cloud testbeds. The aim of BonFIRE is to provide an infrastructure that gives experimenters the ability to control and monitor the execution of their experiments to a degree that is not found in traditional cloud facilities. The BonFIRE architecture has been designed to support key functionalities such as: resource management; monitoring of virtual and physical infrastructure metrics; elasticity; single document experiment descriptions; and scheduling. As for January 2012 BonFIRE release 2 is operational, supporting seven pilot experiments. Future releases will enhance the offering, including the interconnecting with networking facilities to provide access to routers, switches and bandwidth-on-demand systems. BonFIRE will be open for general use late 2012
