A problem in the Theory of Groups and a question related to Fibonacci-Like sequences
2013 - 2014This thesis is composed of four chapters, two of which, Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, contain original results. In Chapter 1 we recall some basic notions and establish some of the notation and terminology which will be used in the sequel. For example, we recall some useful results about the class X of groups which are isomorphic to
their non-abelian subgroups. Every group of this class is in_nite and 2-generated. This class of groups has been studied by H. Smith and J. Wiegold( [34]). They proved that every insoluble X-group is centre- by-simple and they gave a complete characterization of soluble X-groups. Then we recall some results about _nitely generated groups which are isomorphic to their non-trivial normal subgroups. In particular, we will use the result proved by J.C. Lennox, H. Smith and J. Wiegold in [17], for which if G is a _nitely generated in_nite group that is isomorphic to all its non-trivial normal subgroups and which contains a proper normal subgroup of _nite index, then G ' Z...
In an article published in the newspaper "A Província do Pará" on October 18, 1992, the historian, anthropologist, and folklorist from Pará, Vicente Salles, announced his most recent acquisition: a book with a Latin title, printed to be used in the Convent of Mercedarian friars in Belém, on Pará. The researcher named it "João da Veiga's antiphonary" - the name of the commander of the convent, printed on the book's title page. Among his findings, it was one of the volumes for which he devoted the most care and interest, as he was certain it was one of the rarest. Drawing on the opinion of musicologist Clavier Filho, he argued that the book "highlights the importance of Iberian plainchant in the construction of Amazonian musical folklore". In his doctoral thesis, Paulo Castagna spoke on the book, confirming the rarity and importance of the volume: "the first properly liturgical publication by a Brazilian author is João da Veiga's Rituale sacri, with Tridentine texts and melodies". This work aims to analyze the mercedarian Ritual of friars from Pará and investigate the origin of its content, comparing it with other books of European origin, through the development of critical apparatus for texts and melodies. The motivations and needs of Friar João da Veiga to carry out this work were also investigated, based on the history of the Mercedarian order and its liturgical-musical elements, and the history of the Order's presence in Pará, which is still full of gaps. It was concluded that the Ritual of Mercês in Pará is similar to another Mercedarian ritual with Spanish origin -- expanded with other ceremonies of Portuguese Tridentine origin or of the Order itself -- which maintained Mercedarian melodies for its own ceremonies but replaced them with melodies from Portuguese books in universal calendar ceremonies. It was also concluded that João da Veiga compiled the ritual for use in the process of training novices as he sought to reform the Order in Pará through new friars who entered the convent, and its content was altered to contain the ceremonies and melodies that were used in the churches of the Bishopric of Pará in the second half of the 18th century.
""This essay of Sara Cabibbo (pp. 65-71; 84-94) and Maria Lupi (pp. 72-84; 94-100) introduces and explains the most significant themes of the treatise Espejo católico, published in Pamplona in 1658 and written by Ignacio Vidondo, a Mercedarian born in Navarre. This volume is directed to defend and exalt the ransoming activity of Christian "captivi" in Muslim land, which was the main aim of the Order of Mercy. In his work, the author gives his own account of his activity as redeemer of slaves, describing the expedition he leaded up to Algeri in 1654 and analyzing practical difficulties coming from the contact with a society so different from the european one. .
The Role of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in Cerebral Palsy: Bridging Treatment Gaps and Enhancing Care
Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a hands-on approach utilized by physicians to diagnose, treat, and prevent various conditions through the application of muscle manipulation techniques. It has been applied in managing chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain, headaches, migraines, Parkinsonian gait, and psychological conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. In our narrative review, we aim to integrate both direct clinical studies of OMM in cerebral palsy (CP) and supportive literature on mechanisms and related conditions. A comprehensive literature search was conducted utilizing PubMed and Google Scholar to identify relevant studies on OMM in CP management. Search strategies were intentionally broad to capture mechanistic, supportive, and clinical evidence. Representative terms included “osteopathic manipulative medicine and cerebral palsy,” “osteopathic treatment and neurological disorders,” and “manual therapy and cerebral palsy.” Additionally, reference lists of relevant articles were manually reviewed to identify additional studies. Overall, we found that integrating OMM into CP management may offer a noninvasive approach to improving MSK function and neuromuscular control while alleviating the emotional and physical challenges, as well as increasing movement to reduce joint contractures associated with the condition. OMM techniques may also help reduce stress, anxiety, and constipation, which are prevalent among CP patients due to the psychological and physiological burdens of the disorder. OMM’s holistic approach has the potential to enhance outcomes for individuals with CP by addressing their multifaceted needs. While further research and advocacy are necessary to fully integrate OMM into mainstream CP management, existing evidence suggests that OMM may improve patient outcomes and quality of life. However, the current evidence has remained somewhat limited

Mortality of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in intensive care units: a post-hoc analysis of an international multicenter study by ESGCIP and EFISG
Background: Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is a life-threatening disease. In the intensive care unit (ICU), PJP is most frequently observed among patients with several conditions not related to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Methods: The primary objective of the present post-hoc analysis of a multicenter, multinational, retrospective study was to assess factors impacting prognosis in ICU patients with PJP through univariable and multivariable analyses. Results: A total of 107 patients were included; 28 had proven PJP (26.2%), and 79 had presumptive PJP (73.8%). The overall 30-day mortality was 52.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 42.1–62.2). In the multivariable analysis, metastatic solid tumor (hazard ratio [HR] 3.49; 95% CI 1.71–7.13, p < 0.001) and chronic liver disease (HR 2.44; 95% CI 1.03–5.80, p = 0.044) showed an independent association with 30-day mortality. The direction of effect remained consistent when center was added to the multivariable model as random effect. Conclusion: PJP mortality remains high in ICU patients. Conditions other than HIV infection are emerging not only as non-classical risk factors for PJP development, but also as important mortality predictors. A better understanding of the reasons underlying this evolving landscape could be crucial to improve PJP management and survival. © 2025 The Author(s). The steel-concrete interface
Although the steel
-
concrete
interface (SCI) is widely recognized to influence the durability
of reinforced concrete, a systematic overview and detailed documentation of the various
aspects of the SCI are lacking.
In this paper, we compiled
a comprehensive list of possible
local chara
cteristics at the SCI and reviewed available information regarding their properties
as well as their occurrence in engineering structures
and in the laboratory
. Given the
complexity of the SCI, we suggested a systematic approach to describe it in terms of
local
characteristics
and
their physical and chemical properties. It was found that the SCI exhibits
significant
spatial inhomogeneity along and around as well as perpendicular to the
reinforcing steel
. The SCI can differ strongly between different enginee
ring structures and
also between different members within a structure; particular differences are expected
between structures built before and after the 1970/80s. A single SCI representing all on
-
site
conditions does not exist. Additionally, SCIs in common
laboratory
-
made specimens exhibit
significant differences compared to engineering structures. Thus, results from laboratory
studies and from practical experience should be applied to engineering structures with
caution. Finally, recommendations for furthe
r research are made
Global impoverishment of natural vegetation revealed by dark diversity
Anthropogenic biodiversity decline threatens the functioning of ecosystems and the many benefits they provide to humanity . As well as causing species losses in directly affected locations, human influence might also reduce biodiversity in relatively unmodified vegetation if far-reaching anthropogenic effects trigger local extinctions and hinder recolonization. Here we show that local plant diversity is globally negatively related to the level of anthropogenic activity in the surrounding region. Impoverishment of natural vegetation was evident only when we considered community completeness: the proportion of all suitable species in the region that are present at a site. To estimate community completeness, we compared the number of recorded species with the dark diversity-ecologically suitable species that are absent from a site but present in the surrounding region . In the sampled regions with a minimal human footprint index, an average of 35% of suitable plant species were present locally, compared with less than 20% in highly affected regions. Besides having the potential to uncover overlooked threats to biodiversity, dark diversity also provides guidance for nature conservation. Species in the dark diversity remain regionally present, and their local populations might be restored through measures that improve connectivity between natural vegetation fragments and reduce threats to population persistence. The life and works of Osbert of Clare
Osbert of Clare was an English monastic writer, whose works extended from
the mid-1120s to the mid-1150s. His Latin hagiography reflects a deep admiration for
Anglo-Saxon saints and spirituality, while his letters provide a personal perspective
on his turbulent career. As prior of Westminster Abbey, Osbert of Clare worked to
strengthen the rights and prestige of his monastery. His production of forged or
altered charters makes him one of England's most prolific medieval forgers. At times
his passion for reform put him at odds with his abbots, and he was sent into exile
under both Abbot Herbert (1121-c.1136) and Abbot Gervase (1138-c.1157). Also
Osbert, as one of the first proponents of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, wrote
about the feast, worked to legitimize its celebration, and provided us with the only
significant narration of its introduction to England.
This thesis is divided into two sections. The first section is principally
historical and the second is principally literary. In the first section, I provide an
overview of Osbert of Clare's career and examine in greater detail two of his most
significant undertaking: his promotion of Westminster Abbey and his attempted
canonization of Edward the Confessor. In the second section, I give a philological
study of Osbert Latin style and examine themes that nm throughout his writings, such
as virginity, exile and kingship. Osbert's promotion of the feast of the Immaculate
Conception is included in the second section of the thesis because of its ties to the
themes of virginity and femininity within his writings. There are also two appendices:
the first is a survey of the extant manuscripts of Osbert's writings, and the second is
an edition of Osbert's unpublished Life of St Ethelbert from Gotha,
