Dimensionality analysis in machine learning failure detection models. A case study with LNG compressors

    No full text
Embargado hasta 01/01/2100The correct selection of the subset of features for the design of a CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) strategy may result in models working faster and producing more accurate predictions. This must be done avoiding a phenomenon known as the curse of dimensionality, that appears in Machine Learning when algorithms must learn from an ample feature volume with abundant values within each one. This paper deals precisely with feature selection problem when dealing with compressors failure modes detection, using machine learning (ML) models. To that end, several feature selection ranking (FSR) meth- ods are considered. These methods are basically algorithms which include wrappers and filters and they are able to provide a ranking about all the analysed features. A very important issue of these methods, is to realise the feature selection unconstrained of the Machine Learning algorithm to be later applied, and that will be tested in this paper. Stability and scalability of these methods will be also defined and discussed in the paper. The paper case study evaluates the possibility of detecting and therefore diagnosing the rod drop failure mode appearance in Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) cryogenic reciprocating compressors by using artificial intelligence analysis techniques. This failure mode implies unavailability of this equipment, which are critic in the LNG industry due to the cost of flaring or, less common and desirable, venting of the boil-off gas (BOG) recovered by its compression in order to send it out or use as fuel. More than 90.000 running hours and thirteen representative features are evaluated as well as thirteen FSR methods. Three most-used classifiers have been employed in order to assess the feature rankers’ effect over the models development to diagnose the rod drop failure. Conclusions are about the possibility, not only to diagnose the appearance of a failure mode like rod drop, but also to do it with considering a reduced number of features

Broken Landscapes: some considerations on rural habitat Marianico from the photographic image

    No full text
This paper attempts to show the different facets visual, sensory and cognitive tour the rural landscapes of Sierra Morena. Direct observation of the territory along with the photo used as main reference look towards seeking a smaller scale than that offered a map or satellite image. The objectives of this paper are to explain the characteristics of the spaces represented and try to recover the dignity landscaping in a rural area that seems brittle and threatens to change definitely the face of mariánicos spaces

In Spain an Act is about to be approved that both decriminalizes and makes euthanasia and assisted suicide an object of public service. This work considers whether a project with such characteristics can find constitutional support in the "free development of the personality" referred to in article 10.1 CE. Both the American jurisprudence on "freedom of personal choice" and the ECHR on "personal autonomy" are critically analyzed, both in relation to euthanasia. After also studying the Spanish jurisprudence on “free development of the personality”, an interpretation of this constitutional clause is proposed, concluding that a legal text such as the one cited cannot be protected in that clause

    Electrocution in the horse

I) (V = R x I).

Genetic components of heat stress in finishing pigs: development of a heat load function

    No full text
Embargado hasta 01/01/2100The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of heat stress during the life of a pig on its final weight, as a first step toward a genetic evaluation for heat tolerance. Data included carcass weights of 23,556 crossbred pigs [Duroc x (Landrace x Large White)] raised on 2 farms in North Carolina and slaughtered from May 2005 through December 2006. Weather data were available from a nearby weather station. Lifetime of a pig was assumed to be partitioned into 2 periods. During an initial period, the effect of heat stress was assumed to be negligible or compensated for later. During the second period ending in slaughtering, the ADG was assumed to be affected linearly by heat load. Weekly heat load was calculated as degrees of average temperature-humidity index in excess of a threshold (18 degrees C). The total heat load (H) was the sum of weekly heat loads during the second period. During the months of January to May H was 0; H reached a peak in September. The final BW during the peak of heat stress decreased about 6 kg compared with BW during months of non-heat stress. Weekly and monthly averages of carcass weight generally moved similarly to H. However, there were large fluctuations unrelated to H; the fluctuations were different on the 2 farms. The model included the effects of farm-year of slaughter, sex, age at slaughter, and H, where age at slaughter and H were linear regressions. In analyses, the threshold was varied from 16 to 20 degrees C, and the second period was varied from 8 to 16 wk. The greatest R(2) (10.4%) was at the threshold of temperature-humidity index = 18 degrees C for a period of 10 wk. Varying the threshold and the length of time reduced R(2) less than 1%. Least squares means of year-month and year-week of carcass weight were calculated using a model with the fixed effects farm-year-month or farm-year-week of slaughter, sex, and age at slaughter (linear covariate), and the random effect of birth litter. Changes in BW of finisher pigs due to heat stress can be quantified by H during the last 10 wk of the life of the pig

Value of Measuring Lipoprotein(a) During Cascade Testing for Familial Hypercholesterolemia

    No full text
Embargado hasta 01-01-2100BACKGROUND Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] are inherited disorders associated with premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Cascade testing is recommended for FH, but there are no similar recommendations for elevated Lp(a). OBJECTIVES This study investigated whether testing for Lp(a) was effective in detecting and risk stratifying individuals participating in an FH cascade screening program. METHODS Family members (N 1⁄4 2,927) from 755 index cases enrolled in SAFEHEART (Spanish Familial Hypercholesterolemia Cohort Study) were tested for genetic FH and elevated Lp(a) via an established screening program. Elevated Lp(a) was defined as levels $50 mg/dl. The authors compared the prevalence and yield of new cases of high Lp(a) in relatives of FH probands both with and without high Lp(a), and prospectively investigated the association between elevated Lp(a) and ASCVD events among family members. RESULTS Systematic screening from index cases with both FH and elevated Lp(a) identified 1 new case of elevated Lp(a) for every 2.4 screened. Opportunistic screening from index cases with FH, but without elevated Lp(a), identified 1 individual for 5.8 screened. Over 5 years’ follow-up, FH (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.47; p 1⁄4 0.036) and elevated Lp(a) (HR: 3.17; p 1⁄4 0.024) alone were associated with a significantly increased risk of experiencing an ASCVD event or death compared with individuals with neither disorder; the greatest risk was observed in relatives with both FH and elevated Lp(a) (HR: 4.40; p < 0.001), independent of conventional risk factors. CONCLUSIONS Testing for elevated Lp(a) during cascade screening for FH is effective in identifying relatives with high Lp(a) and heightened risk of ASCVD, particularly when the proband has both FH and elevated Lp(a)
