Diphoton lineshape of the BEH boson using the ATLAS detector at the LHC: calibration, mass, width and interferences
Since the data collected during the first run of the LHC by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations allowed for the discovery of the BEH boson, a huge effort has been done toward the detailed studies of its properties. This thesis is particularly oriented toward the understanding of the BEH boson lineshape in its diphoton decay channel, using the data collected by the ATLAS detector in 2011 and 2012. The electromagnetic calibration of the ATLAS detector is described in details, and the precise measurement of the BEH boson mass it allowed for, at GeV, is summarized. A first upper limit on the BEH boson decay width, that gave a limit at GeV at 95% C.L., is presented in details). The last part of this thesis presents a study of quantum interferences between signal and background processes in the channel, which are expected to distord the diphoton lineshape and create a shift of the measured BEH boson mass, that is estimated to be of 35 MeV, which is small but not negligible
Cyril Tourneur : déictique et/ou didascalie, écriture d’un décor virtuel
In Cyril Tourneur’s Laugh and Lie Down or The World’s Folly and The Transformed Metamorphosis the scene is set in enclosed claustrophobic spaces, frightening replicas of hell and purgatory in which shadows occupy the whole locus. The camera-obscura-like microcosms, respectively given as ‘the world’s folly’ and a ‘concavitie’, can be seen as specific theatrical places devoted to entertainment and revelling, including fantasmagory. It was then fashionable to stage the spectacular in garden grottoes and follies. The evolution of mechanical devices amplified the performances in which the audience took an active part. The pamphlet and poem by Tourneur render the ‘texts in contexts’ relationship as if particular images of the period were cast and traced on their sheets through the magnifying glass of a politically involved and committed author. Deictic and Didascalia punctuate the virtual and/or real journey, onstage, offstage and backstage

Surface characterisation of phosphine and phosphite stabilised Rh nanoparticles: a model study
author can archive pre-print (ie pre-refereeing)
author can archive post-print (ie final draft post-refereeing)Small and well defined Rh nanoparticles (<2 nm) stabilised by the model ligands triphenylphosphine 1 and triphenylphosphite 2 were synthesised using various P/Rh ratios. In all cases, the crystalline NPs exhibited a spherical shape and a fcc structure. During the synthesis of these materials, hydrogenation and oxidation of the stabilisers take place and the degree of hydrogenation of the stabilising ligand increased when low ligand to Rh ratio is used during their synthesis. The Rh1 systems mainly contain adsorbed phosphine oxide species at their surface whereas the Rh2 systems include both phosphite and phosphite oxide species. Analysis of the surface of these nanoparticles by Infrared spectroscopy revealed the presence of Rh-H at the surface of the NPs and hydride titration experiments revealed a higher hydride coverage for the phosphine stabilized systems. By CO adsorption/Infrared experiments, bridging, terminal and geminal Rh(CO)2 sites were detected. All these systems were active catalysts in the hydrogenation of styrene and the observation of Rh(CO)2 sites could be correlated with the activity of these species for the hydrogenation of the aromatic ring
Michal, contradicting values : understanding the moral dilemma faced by Saul's daughter
Value conflicts due to cultural differences are an increasingly pressing issue in many societies. Because Old Testament texts hail from a very different milieu to our own they may provide new perspectives upon contemporary conflicts and, in this context, the present dissertation investigates one particular value clash in 1 Samuel.
Studies of Old Testament ethics have attended to narrative only relatively recently. Although social-scientific interpretation has a longer pedigree, there are important debates about how to employ the fruits of anthropology in biblical studies. The first part of this thesis, therefore, attends to methodological issues, advancing four main propositions. First, attention should be paid to the moral goods that feature in the text. Second, the family, a central feature of Old Testament morality, should be understood as a set of practices rather than an institution. Third, 'models' of social action that purport to comprehend the social world of the Bible should be used only cautiously. Finally, a modified version of Bakhtin's theory of heteroglossic voices can help readers appreciate how authors present a moral vision by approving some characters' actions whilst undermining others.
The second part of the thesis employs this methodology to examine 1 Samuel 19.10-18a. The discussion of the moral dilemma facing Michal adduces anthropological theories and ethnographic data concerning violence, lying, and the relationship between fathers and daughters. Given that the conflicts of moral goods are 'resolved' by characters choosing to act in a certain way, the dissertation enquires after the author's assessment of each character's moral choices, and hence their theological import. The dissertation argues that Michal's loyalty to David and deception of Saul was counter-cultural, and by approving of her choice the author affirms the importance of loyalty to the Davidic dynasty
Allergic rhinitis and its impact on asthma (ARIA): achievements in 10 years and future needs
Allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma represent global health problems for all age groups. Asthma and rhinitis frequently coexist in the same subjects. Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) was initiated during a World Health Organization workshop in 1999 (published in 2001). ARIA has reclassified AR as mild/moderate-severe and intermittent/persistent. This classification closely reflects patients' needs and underlines the close relationship between rhinitis and asthma. Patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals are confronted with various treatment choices for the management of AR. This contributes to considerable variation in clinical practice, and worldwide, patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals are faced with uncertainty about the relative merits and downsides of the various treatment options. In its 2010 Revision, ARIA developed clinical practice guidelines for the management of AR and asthma comorbidities based on the Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. ARIA is disseminated and implemented in more than 50 countries of the world. Ten years after the publication of the ARIA World Health Organization workshop report, it is important to make a summary of its achievements and identify the still unmet clinical, research, and implementation needs to strengthen the 2011 European Union Priority on allergy and asthma in children
The Pontifical Swiss Guards in «Der Schweizergardist» in 2007-2017
This article discusses the contents of «Der Schweizergardist» and presents the image of the Pontifical Swiss Guard created on its pages. The period covered starts with the publication of the magazine’s first issue in 2007 and finishes with the release of the current 3/2017 issue. Until now, this subject has not been raised in the world historiography. «Der Schweizergardist» is not available in Poland, hence it remains unknown among native historians. The magazine is the main source of information on the recent history of the Swiss Pontifical Guard. Additional cognitive value can be found in the series of interviews conducted with the members of the Guards Corps and printed on the pages of «Der Schweizergardist». Historical articles related to the subject of PSG are also interesting. The author intends to answer the following research questions in this text: What was the origin of the magazine? Who is editing the magazine? What is the contents of «Der Schweizergardist»? What do the administrative and technical, permanent and special sections of the magazine look like; what do they concern? Who has been interviewed? Who are the authors of historical texts? In what light is the daily service of the papal guards exposed and what is the attention paid to?.Artykuł prezentuje zawartość czasopisma „Der Schweizergardist” i przedstawia wizerunek Papieskiej Gwardii Szwajcarskiej kreowany na jego łamach. Kto redaguje magazyn? O czym pisano w „Der Schweizergardist”? Jak wyglądały i czego dotyczyły administracyjno-techniczne, stałe i nadzwyczajne rubryki czasopisma? Z kim przeprowadzano wywiady? Popular song in early modern drama 1580-1620
This dissertation investigates the reciprocal relationship between the song culture of early modern England and its representation in drama of the late sixteenth and early
seventeenth centuries. Unlike past studies, no preference is given to any particular playwright. Rather, the dissertation considers evidence from close to 100 plays in which songs, references to song, and elements of song culture are most abundant.
The study begins with an exploration into the particular ability of early modern audience members to recognise and appreciate sophisticated references to song as they
encountered them in drama. Next there is a discussion of some of the more famous characters of song culture whose narratives and reputations – effectively lost to us now
– were regularly mined by playwrights. The third part of the study investigates song’s power as represented in fictive spaces. Chapter 4 examines dramatic representations of song performance by elites and their relationship to contemporary decorum. Lastly, Chapter 5 focuses on a point in London’s history where its dramatists appear to have
been particularly keen to capitalize on song’s function as a consolidator of cultural identity.
The overriding impression at the end of the study is of early modern playwrights basing representations of song and singing less upon contemporary beliefs surrounding
music, its power, and its place in the cosmos, and more upon phenomenological observation of song as it operates in people and in their society
