Model based defect characterization in composites
Work is reported on model-based defect characterization in CFRP composites. The work utilizes computational models of the interaction of NDE probing energy fields (ultrasound and thermography), to determine 1) the measured signal dependence on material and defect properties (forward problem), and 2) an assessment of performance-critical defect properties from analysis of measured NDE signals (inverse problem). Work is reported on model implementation for inspection of CFRP laminates containing multi-ply impact-induced delamination, with application in this paper focusing on ultrasound. A companion paper in these proceedings summarizes corresponding activity in thermography. Inversion of ultrasound data is demonstrated showing the quantitative extraction of damage properties.This proceeding may be downloaded for personal use only. "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

Energy Confinement in the Advanced RFP
In earlier numerical studies [1,2] of confinement in the optimized, conventional reversed-field pinch (RFP), the scaling of energy confinement time with plasma current and density was found to be too weak to lead into fusion relevant regimes. In the advanced RFP, however, the detrimental magnetic (dynamo) fluctuations are largely eliminated by the presence of an externally applied electric field. This field is adjusted to generate a tearing mode stable parallel current density profile. Previous studies [3,4] used a gaussian shaped electric field with given width and amplitude that was localised at some minor radius of the plasma. A threefold increase in energy confinement was found, but the three associated parameters made further optimisation difficult. In the present work a new, parameter free scheme for current profile control is introduced. An automatic control system continuously replaces the dynamo electric field. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

CD14 and TRIF govern distinct responsiveness and responses in mouse microglial TLR4 challenges by structural variants of LPS
Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 responds to a range of agonists in infection and injury, but is best known for the recognition of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Assembly in heterologous receptor complexes as well as signaling through both MyD88 and TRIF adaptor proteins, as unmatched by other TLRs, could underlie its versatile response options, probably also in a cell type-dependent manner. We show that microglia, the CNS macrophages, react to diverse LPS variants, including smooth (S) and rough (R) LPS chemotypes, with cytokine/chemokine induction, MHC I expression and suppression of myelin phagocytosis. The TLR4 co-receptor CD14 was shown in peritoneal macrophages to be essential for S-LPS effects and the link of both S- and R-LPS to TRIF signaling. In contrast, cd14(-/-) microglia readily respond to S- and R-LPS, suggesting an a priori high(er) sensitivity to both chemotypes, while CD14 confers increased S- and R-LPS potencies and compensates for their differences. Importantly, CD14 controls the magnitude and shapes the profile of cyto/chemokine production, this influence being itself regulated by critical LPS concentrations. Comparing reactive phenotypes of microglia with deficiencies in CD14, MyD88 and TRIF (cd14(-/-) myd88(-/-), and trif(dPs2)), we found that distinct signaling routes organize for individual functions in either concerted or non-redundant fashion and that CD14 has contributions beyond the link to TRIP. Modulation of response profiles by key cytokines finally reveals that the microglial TLR4 can differentiate between the class of LPS structures and a self-derived agonist, fibronectin. It thus proves as a sophisticated decision maker in infectious and non-infectious CNS challenges. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc.
