    The French-Anglophone divide in lithic research: A plea for pluralism in Palaeolithic Archaeology

    In this provocative study, Shumon T. Hussain engages with the long-standing issue of French-Anglophone research conflicts in Palaeolithic archaeology. By examining a range of well-selected case studies and discursive contexts, the author shows that French and Anglophone approaches in lithic analysis are anchored in opposing cognitive frameworks. He argues that the mainstays of this division can be elucidated by calling upon the marginalised work of American philosopher Stephen C. Pepper, who captured the totality of credible Western thought in terms of four equitable world hypotheses. Based upon his insights, the dissertation demonstrates that French lithic research gravitates towards ‘contextualistic’ and ‘organicistic’ modes of inquiry, while Anglophone approaches tend to rely on ‘formistic’ and ‘mechanistic’ styles of reasoning. Hussain carefully lays out the implications of this condition for mutual understanding and critical practice. He contends that the French-Anglophone divide can only be overcome if scholars endorse scientific pluralism and begin to seriously take into consideration both the strengths and shortcomings of different cognitive frameworks, including their own.     Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions B(B0→K∗0γ )/B(B0s→φγ ) and the directCP asymmetry inB 0→K∗0γ

    The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0→K⁎0γ and B0s→ϕγ has been measured using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 of pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=7TeV. The value obtained is B(B0→K⁎0γ)B(B0s→ϕγ)=1.23±0.06(stat.)±0.04(syst.)±0.10(fs/fd), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is associated with the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average value for B(B0→K⁎0γ), the branching fraction B(B0s→ϕγ) is measured to be (3.5±0.4)×10−5. The direct CP asymmetry in B0→K⁎0γ decays has also been measured with the same data and found to be ACP(B0→K⁎0γ)=(0.8±1.7(stat.)±0.9(syst.))%. Both measurements are the most precise to date and are in agreement with the previous experimental results and theoretical expectations

    Observation of the suppressed ADS modes B± → [π±K-/+ π+π-]D K± and B± → [π± K-/+π+π-]Dπ±

    An analysis of and B± → DK± and B± → Dπ± decays is presented where the D meson is reconstructed in the four-body final state K± π-/+π+π-. Using LHCb data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1, first observations are made of the suppressed ADS modes B± →[π± K-/+π+π-]DK± and B± → [π± K-/+π+π-]Dπ± with a significance of 5.1 sigma and greater than 10 sigma, respectively. Measurements of CP asymmetries and CP-conserving ratios of partial widths from this family of decays are also performed. The magnitude of the ratio between the suppressed and favoured B± → DK ± amplitudes is determined to be rKB = 0.097 ± 0.011

Expresses the hope that in the development of State Information Infrastructure, in which major part of the content is to be in Malayalam, the concerned can utilize the technology successfully experimented in the present product.     First observation of the decay Bs0→K*0K*0

    The first observation of the decay B0s→K∗0K∗0 is reported using 35 pb−1 of data collected by LHCb in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A total of 49.8±7.5 B0s→(K+π−)(K−π+) events are observed within ±50 MeV/c2 of the B0s mass and 746 MeV/c2 < mKπ < 1046 MeV/c2, mostly coming from a resonant B0s→K∗0K∗0 signal. The branching fraction and the CP-averaged K∗0 longitudinal polarization fraction are measured to be B(B0s→K∗0K∗0)=(2.81±0.46(stat.)±0.45(syst.)±0.34(fs/ fd))×10−5 and fL =0.31±0.12(stat.)±0.04(syst.)

    K-means online-learning routing protocol (K-MORP) for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) adhoc networks

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become a hot topic due to their flexible architecture adopted in many wireless technologies. In UAV ad hoc networks, traditional routing protocols with a fixed topology are ineffective due to dynamic mobility and unstable paths. Therefore, the mobility patterns of UAVs challenge efficient and reliable routing in UAV networks. Traditional routing algorithms are often based on assumptions of static nodes and predetermined network topologies. Which are not suitable for the dynamic and unpredictable nature of UAV mobility patterns. To address this problem, this paper introduces a K-means online learning routing protocol (KMORP) scheme employing a Markov mobility model for UAV ad hoc networks. Initially, the proposed method utilizes a 3D Gauss Markov mobility model to accurately estimate UAV positions, while K-means online learning is adopted for dynamic clustering and load balancing. Designed for real-time data processing, KMORP is well suited for UAV ad hoc networks, quickly adapting to network environmental changes such as UAV mobility, interference, and signal degradation to ensure efficient data transmission and communication. This is achieved while reducing the overall communication overhead and increasing the packet delivery ratio(PDR%). In the routing phase, the proposed scheme employs inter-cluster forwarding nodes to transmit messages among different clusters. Extensive simulations demonstrate the performance of the proposed KMORP, showing a 38% better PDR compared to OLSR and over 50% less end-to-end(E2E) delay compared to typical K-Means. Furthermore, the proposed KMORP exhibited an average throughput of 955 kbps, showing a substantial improvement in network performance. The results underscore that the proposed KMORP outperforms existing techniques in terms of PDR, E2E delay, and throughput.© 2023 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.     Vortex-Induced Vibrations of In-Line Cantilevered Cylinders: A Numerical Investigation for Nuclear Industry Benchmark Testing

    The advent of global warming has brought an increased interest in non-conventional sources of energy, one of which is nuclear energy. Threatening the almost year-round functioning of nuclear power plants are Flow-Induced Vibrations (FIV). One such mechanism, Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV), holds importance in areas of cross flow in nuclear power plants. To make fail-safedesigns, computational analysis in the domain of Fluid Structure Interactions (FSI) has been increasing over the past two decades. The thesis work aims to add to the body of knowledge by making predictions for an in-line two-cylinder configuration, set up as part of a benchmark proposed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), using the commercial code Simcenter STARCCM+ (v2020.3.1).The main objective of this study is to test the efficacy of the URANS framework in predicting VIV which is strongly correlated with the objective of the OECD to propose recommendations for the Best Practice Guidelines. To do so, it is desired to shortlist the most appropriate turbulence model for the final application and point out gaps in the prediction of the same. The thesis work is thus carried out in three phases: code validation, turbulence model selection and final application. Key results from this study reveal the ‘Standard K-EpsilonLow Re: Cubic’ model to be the most apt for the final application. Furthermore, gaps are also identified in the application of URANS to predict VIV resonance conditions, the primary of which is the overprediction of the vortex shedding frequency.Aerospace Engineerin

    Conservation in an Islamic context a case study of Makkah

    The Holy Qu’ rān contains many injunctions for Muslims to respect and conserve the natural environment but few address the built environment. Habitat at the time of the Prophet (PBOH) was in the vernacular and relatively impermanent. The first habitat was the cave, the second the tent and then simple flat roofed buildings of post and lintel construction made of mud and rubble. Later buildings were not indigenous but reflected the architectural styles and techniques of Muslim pilgrims from beyond the Arabian Peninsula. Permanent exotic buildings were later erected as reminders of holy places and events. This work advances a case to restore and preserve historic and religious sites in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Makkah is the destination for millions of Muslim pilgrims who annually pay homage to Allah during the occasions of Hajj, Ramadan and Umra. The tranquillity and peaceful ambience that one associates with the holiest of Islamic experiences have, over the years, given way to jostling crowds of people who must be expediently housed, fed, transported, and protected. Due to the lack of planning and the insensitive but profitable development of the city, Makkah is in grave danger of becoming a bustling metropolis instead of a sanctuary where pilgrims gather to perform their religious rites and reaffirm their dedication to Allah. The author calls for professional planning and international cooperation to guide future development for this expanding and sensitive area. The author's ideas are grounded in practical and aesthetic study, therefore, the political, environmental and economic issues are examined in relationship to religious, historic and artistic values. The author makes proposals for a future Makkah that would provide pilgrims with the physical comforts, security, and serene environment they deserve—without destroying the city they came to visit. The author discusses preservation and conservation in the western world and the need for their acceptance in Muslim countries, the former being an aesthetic and intellectual concept sustained by law and the latter being the prescribed free expression of the individual unhindered by material considerations. Both worlds are rapidly being overwhelmed by materialism, but body, mind and spirit combine in making us aware of our surroundings and the way in what we see around us has come into being
