QUERY PROCESSING STRATEGIES IN THE PASCAL/R
In the database programming language PASCAL/R, the programming language PASCAL and concepts based on the relational data model are integrated. The paper investigates transformation strategies used in the PASCAL/R system to evaluate queries with existential and universal quantifiers. Intermediate data structures are described using a high-level language tool called a reference to a selected variable. The predicate calculus approach used in PASCAL/R offers new insight into recently proposed query optimization techniques and allows some of them to be extended
Lumière Naturrelle as the Common Sense according to Blaise Pascal
This paper depicts one of the essential elements in the tradition of European philosophy,
namely a belief in the commonsensical endowment of the human mind. This
position founds the non-evidential beliefs with regard to fundamental questions in theoretical
knowledge and in human action. In particular, it combines the approach typical
of the Scottish common sense philosophy with the philosophy of Blaise Pascal. In each
case it shows the integral character of human knowledge, transcending the set of truths
accessible in the knowledge based on discourse (raison). It pinpoints the role Pascal attributed
to intuition defined in the categories of sentir or even instinct, working on such
categories as esprit de finesse, identified with sens droit or esprit de justesse, categories
essential in relation to the knowledge of principes. At the same time thus understood
endowment of the human mind (lumière naturelle) corresponds, in certain aspects, to
the knowledge based on coeur, the knowledge set in opposition to the rationalistic interpretation
of raison, where on the grounds of religion lumière naturelle is complementary
to inspiration or révélation.prof. dr hab. Stanisław Janeczek, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II,

Samuel Beckett and the Writers of Port-Royal
It has been observed that ‘the literary influences on Beckett have been far more important than has been acknowledged, and more important indeed, than the philosophical influences’ (Smith 2002: 3). The truth of this statement is evidenced by the description that scholars have given of Samuel Beckett’s relationship to seventeenth century French classicism. To date, critical interest has been limited for the most part to the figure of the philosopher René Descartes on the (fragile) grounds that Beckett was exclusively concerned with the Cartesian imperative of clarity and order, the fundamental dualism between body and mind, and Nominalism.
Together with the assumption that Beckett’s vision was essentially Cartesian, his literary filiation with Pascal was suggested by critics, but only in terms of Beckett’s formal approach to the theatre. In his short article on En attendant Godot in 1953, the playwright Jean Anouilh was among the first reviewers to suggest that Beckett’s drama synthesizes the encounter between ‘classicism’ and a ‘modern’ form of art. It is well known that Beckett retained a lifelong admiration for Pascal – indeed, Pascal was one of his ‘old chestnuts’ (Knowlson 1997: 653). Little attention has been paid, however, to the originality of Pascal’s thought, the specific nature of his prose, and the impact these might have had upon Beckett’s mature work, especially the trilogy and the subsequent short prose. Yet, in the literary and philosophical context of post-war France, Beckett’s filiation with Pascal, their corresponding preoccupations, were evident to his contemporaries, who identified Pascal as an underlying presence in his works
Pascal Tutorial, 1987
There exists a limited number of tutorials for the Pascal programming language using the Apple Computer. The demand for these tutorials exceeds the supply. In this thesis an attempt was made to rectify this shortage by designing a Pascal tutorial for the Apple computer. This Pascal tutorial is designed to assist with instructing an introductory computer programming course in Pascal, incorporating Apple Superpilot as the authoring language. Emphasis is placed on making the program "user friendly." A person with no previous programming experience should be able to easily execute this tutorial. The information presented as the subject matter of the tutorial will follow the guidelines recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery

The Symbolism of the Night that Becomes the Beginning. On the Night-time Obsessions of Pascal Quignard
Tekst poświęcony jest zagadnieniu nocy i jej symbolicznych konotacji w odniesieniu do albumu-eseju Pascala Quignarda Noc seksualna (przeł. K. Rutkowski). W moim szkicu stawiam pytania o inspiracje Pascala Quignarda mrokiem nocy i zajmujące go obsesje ciemności przed narodzinami człowieka. A text dedicated to the night and its symbolic connotations with regard to Pascal Quignard’s album-essay The Sexual Night (translated by K. Rutkowski). The author of the sketch enquires about Pascal Quignard’s inspiration sought in night-time darkness and obsessions of darkness prior to man’s birth. R. Zając points to Georges Bataille and his album The Tears of Eros as an important context of the imagination of the French man of letters. She is interested in the symbolic dimension of both the night and existential situations recurring in Quignard’s world
SWALES Sonic Buoy - Sonic Anemometer spectral and raw data report
During the SWALES experiment in the autumn of 1993, the Sonic Buoy was deployed twice as part of an array of moored instrumentation. On the Sonic Buoy, 3 component wind speed samples were acqujred by the Sonic Processor from a Gill Sonic Anemometer; using a sampling rate of 20.83 Hz. These data were spectrally processed to a form which allowed estimation of wind stress to be made, using the disSipation technique. The processed data were saved to an EPROM logger and a selected set of parameters was also sent to the Formatter Processor for amalgamation with the Multimet mean
meteorological data. Raw anemometer data were continuously telemetered via a VHF link to shore and occasional records of raw data were also logged on the Sonic Buoy Raw Data Logger.
This data report briefly describes the processes employed in acquisition of the data. It then describes the processes for the recovery of the data from the various source media, the quality control procedures applied and, finally, the resulting output data files.
Appendices include comprehensive details of the software developed for the above processes and of the formats used for the input and output data
Christianity in the ‘Pensées’ of Blaise Pascal and the reflections of Fulton Sheen. An attempt at comparison
Artykuł analizuje i porównuje apologetyczne metody dwóch znaczących postaci: Blaise’a Pascala (1623–1662) i Fultona Sheena (1895–1979). The article analyses and compares the apologetic methods of two significant figures: Blaise Pascal (1623–1662) and Fulton Sheen (1895–1979). Despite their differing historical and cultural contexts, both thinkers are concerned with defending Christianity, its credibility and its moral significance as a life proposition. Pascal, in his unfinished Pensées, focuses on the intrinsic greatness and misery of human existence, presenting Christianity as a path to transcendence. Sheen, on the other hand, in his book entitled Upward Heart. The Way to Spiritual Peace emphasises the need for self-discipline and self-knowledge as necessary means to achieve inner balance, maturity and peace. The article employs a comparative method to show how each author uses narrative, theology and philosophy to present Christianity as a response to the fundamental human quest for meaning and happiness, highlighting their relevance in the context of contemporary existential and moral challenges
Measurement of the D+/- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions
The asymmetry in the production cross-section \sigma of D+/- mesons, A_P = (\sigma(D+) - \sigma(D-))/(\sigma(D+) + \sigma(D-)), is measured in bins of pseudorapidity \eta and transverse momentum p_T within the acceptance of the LHCb detector. The result is obtained with a sample of D+ -> K_S pi+ decays corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^-1, collected in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. When integrated over the kinematic range 2.0 K_S pi+ decay is negligible. No significant dependence on \eta or p_T is observed
