Lubrication of rough copper with few-layer graphene

    No full text
It has been demonstrated through experiments and simulations that friction decreases significantly when graphene is used as a solid lubricant on various materials. However, the effect of increasing the number of graphene layers on lubrication is controversial. Some studies predict an increase of friction with the number of layers that can be imputed to increased contact area, others a decrease in friction attributed to increased flexural rigidity of the layers. Herein, atomistic simulations are performed to investigate the atomic mechanisms by which few-layers graphene lubricate rough copper surfaces when probed by a smooth tip. The results of the simulations show that increasing the number of graphene layers drastically reduces friction, while the deformation mechanism is found to change from atomic wear to recoverable flattening of surface steps, as the amount of interlocking between the surfaces is reduced.Team Marcel Sluite

Mindfulness in Ethical Consumption: The Mediating Roles of Connectedness to Nature and Self-control

    No full text
Purpose Ethical consumption is an integral component for the sustainable development in the world and is especially challenging in the Western consumer society. This research demonstrates that mindfulness, a Buddhism-based notion, is associated with two related and distinctive approaches of ethical consumption: refinement and reduction. It examines the psychological mechanisms underlying the effects of mindfulness on these two approaches of ethical consumption. Design/methodology/approach Self-report data were collected through an online survey with consumers from western societies (N = 523). Findings The findings show (1) that the significance of mindfulness on both approaches of ethical consumption and (2) that the contrast between the different mechanisms underlying them. Specifically, the mindfulness–consumption refinement link is fully mediated by connectedness-to-nature whereas the mindfulness–consumption reduction link is fully mediated by connectedness-to-nature and self-control. A series of supplementary studies further confirmed the proposed model. Research limitations/implications It demonstrates the multifaceted and complex nature of ethical consumption, which is positively associated with mindfulness but through distinctive psychological mechanisms. Practical implications The multifaceted and complex nature of ethical consumption and its underlying drivers need special attention. Mindfulness can be an effective means to boost ethical consumption behavior. Meanwhile, nurturing the sense of connectedness to nature and self-control capability facilitates the path-through of the positive impacts of mindfulness Social implications The findings can be adopted to enhance the effectiveness of mindfulness practice in promoting ethical consumption towards achieving the Sustainable Consumption goal, especially in the West. Originality/value The paper makes original contribution by conceptualizing two interrelated and distinctive approaches of ethical consumption and shows how mindfulness promotes both through different mediating pathways. Overall, this study paints a clearer picture how mindfulness relates to ethical consumption. This research is supported by a Strategic Research Grant of City University of Hong Kong (CityU 7004789) awarded to the corresponding author Stella Yiyan Li and a Strategic Research Grant of City University of Hong Kong (CityU 7004571) awarded to the second author Dr Liyuan Wei

Genetic associations at 53 loci highlight cell types and biological pathways relevant for kidney function

Reduced glomerular filtration rate defines chronic kidney disease and is associated with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. We conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), combining data across 133,413 individuals with replication in up to 42,166 individuals. We identify 24 new and confirm 29 previously identified loci. Of these 53 loci, 19 associate with eGFR among individuals with diabetes. Using bioinformatics, we show that identified genes at eGFR loci are enriched for expression in kidney tissues and in pathways relevant for kidney development and transmembrane transporter activity, kidney structure, and regulation of glucose metabolism. Chromatin state mapping and DNase I hypersensitivity analyses across adult tissues demonstrate preferential mapping of associated variants to regulatory regions in kidney but not extra-renal tissues. These findings suggest that genetic determinants of eGFR are mediated largely through direct effects within the kidney and highlight important cell types and biological pathways

Differential muscarinic modulation of synaptic transmission in dorsal and ventral regions of the rat nucleus accumbens core

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) core is critical in the control of motivated behaviors. The muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) modulating the excitatory inputs into the NAc core have been reported to impact such behaviors. Recent studies suggest that ventral and dorsal regions of the NAc core seem to be innervated by distinct populations of glutamatergic projection neurons. To further examine mAChRs modulation of these glutamatergic inputs to the NAc core, we employed intracellular recordings in rat NAc coronal slice preparation to characterize: 1) the effects of muscarine, an mAChRs agonist, on membrane properties of the NAc core neurons; 2) depolarizing synaptic potentials (DPSP) elicited by ventral and dorsal focal electrical stimuli; and 3) paired-pulse response with paired-pulse stimulation. Here we report that the paired-pulse ratio (PPR) elicited by dorsal stimuli was greater than that elicited by ventral stimuli. Bath application of muscarine (1-30 mu M) decreased both ventral and dorsal DPSP in a concentration-dependent manner, with no effect on electrophysiological properties of NAc core neurons. Muscarine at 30 mu M also elicited larger depression of dorsal DPSP than ventral DPSP. Moreover, muscarine increased the PPR of both dorsal and ventral DPSP. These data indicate that the glutamatergic afferent fibers traversing the dorsal and ventral NAc are separate, and that differential decrease of distinct afferent excitatory neurotransmission onto NAc core neurons may be mediated by presynaptic mechanisms.</p

Generalized Ces\`aro operators on Dirichlet-type spaces

    No full text
In this note, we introduce and study a new kind of generalized Ces\`aro operators Cμ\mathcal{C}_{\mu}, induced by a positive Borel measure μ\mu on [0,1)[0, 1), between the Dirichlet-type spaces. We characterize the measures μ\mu for which Cμ\mathcal{C}_{\mu} is bounded (compact) from one Dirichlet-type space Dα\mathcal{D}_{\alpha} into another one Dβ\mathcal{D}_{\beta}.Comment: Accepted by Acta Mathematica Scienti

Investigating the size effect of nanoparticles in Click Chemistry mediated cancer targeting

    No full text
Size is one of the most important properties of nanoparticles (NPs) that affects their biodistribution, accumulation and retention in the tumour tissue. The effect of NP size on tumour targeting has been studied in various contexts, with or without a targeting mechanism incorporated. Herein, we report our investigation of the size effect of NPs in Click Chemistry mediated cancer targeting. Realized by anchoring NPs onto the cell surface via metabolic glycoengineering for the cell surface placement of azido group followed by Click Chemistry mediated covalent reaction between the NP and the cell, we demonstrate that the combination effect of deeper penetration of smaller-size NP coupled with reduced clearance presumably due to the Click reaction results in its higher accumulation in the tumour tissue. Specifically, we firstly used metabolic glycoengineering to introduce azido groups to the cell surface, and then investigated the accumulation profiles of dibenzocyclooctyne conjugated nanoparticles bearing different sizes (20, 50 and 200 nm). The 20-nm silica nanoconjugates (NCs) were found to have the highest accumulation in the tumour tissue both ex vivo and in vivo. This work provides further insights into the design of nanomedicine for cancer targeting when the targeting is mediated by a non-conventional, covalent-chemistry-mediated approach.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2023-05-01The student, Ying Wang, accepted the attached license on 2021-04-23 at 13:04.The student, Ying Wang, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2021-04-23 at 13:07.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2021-04-28 at 15:30.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #16443 on 2021-09-16 at 20:11:32Made available in DSpace on 2021-09-17T04:04:41Z (GMT).
