Comptonization of the cosmic microwave background by relativistic plasma
We investigate the spectral distortion of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) caused by relativistic plasma. Within the Thomson regime, an exact analytic expression for the photon scattering kernel of a momentum power-law electron distribution is given. The ultra-relativistic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) decrement measures the electron number and not the energy content. On the other hand, the relativistic SZ increment at higher frequencies depends strongly on the spectral shape of the electrons. We calculate the expected Comptonization due to the energy release of radio galaxies, which we estimate to be 3 × 1066 erg Gpc-3. We investigate Comptonization from (a) the part of the released energy which is thermalized and (b) the relativistic, remnant radio plasma, which may form a second, relativistic phase in the inter galactic medium, nearly unobservable for present day instruments (presence of so called 'radio ghosts'). We find a thermal Comptonization parameter due to (a) of y = 10-6 and (b) an optical depth of relativistic electrons in old radio plasma of τrel < 10-7. If a substantial fraction of the volume of clusters of galaxies is filled with such old radio plasma the SZ effect based determination of the Hubble constant is biased to lower values. Finally, it is shown that a supra-thermal population of electrons in the Coma cluster would produce a signature in the Wien-tail of the CMB, which is marginally detectable with a multifrequency measurement by the Planck satellite. Such a population is expected to exist, since its bremsstrahlung would explain Coma's recently reported high energy X-ray excess

Natural and semisynthetic analogues of manadoperoxide B reveal new structural requirements for trypanocidal activity
Chemical analysis of the Indonesian sponge Plakortis cfr. lita afforded two new analogues of the potent trypanocidal agent manadoperoxide B (1), namely 12-isomanadoperoxide B (2) and manadoperoxidic acid B (3). These compounds were isolated along with a new short chain dicarboxylate monoester (4), bearing some interesting relationships with the polyketide endoperoxides found in this sponge. Some semi-synthetic analogues of manadoperoxide B (6-8) were prepared and evaluated for antitrypanosomal activity and cytotoxicity. These studies revealed crucial structure-activity relationships that should be taken into account in the design of optimized and simplified endoperoxyketal trypanocidal agents
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Reclamation of exploration disturbances at Kaiser Resources Limited, Sparwood, B. C.
Since the formation of the Exploration-Reclamation Section of the
Environmental Services Department in 1974, Kaiser Resources
Limited has carried out an intensive program of reclamation on
land and watercourses affected by past and ongoing coal
exploration activities. To date, 277 acres of land have been
reclaimed. This includes exploration roads, trenches, seam
traces, test pits, drill sites, adits, slide areas and other
related disturbances.
To accomplish this work, a number of innovative techniques are
utilized including terracing of steep dump slopes, pre-logging of
exploration roads, slash disposal using a portable woodchipping
machine and total removal of adit refuse. A number of other
techniques and refinements are still in the research and
development stages.
A system of pre-planning and monitoring of ongoing exploration
work has also been used effectively. This system reduces damage to
environmentally sensitive areas and virtually eliminates
unnecessary disturbance.

Radiocarbon time scale calibration is based on dated absolute chronologies. River bank incision in the Barbiers River (Moyenne Durance, Southern French Alps) reveals numerous lateglacial subfossil Scots pines. Trunks are dated at the end of the Allcröd and the beginning of Younger Dryas. Dendrochronological analyses allow building two floating mean chronologies (BARNA and BARBB). Using wiggle matching method, these chronologies fill the gap between absolute European chronology (with end at 12594 cal. BP, Schaub, 2008a; Hua et al, 2009) and the long Swiss floating chronology (Kaiser et al., 2010). Thereby, a continuous radiocarbon timeframe is available until 14300 cal. BP. Unfortunately, French and Swiss chronologies are not cross-dated
Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions B(B0→K∗0γ )/B(B0s→φγ ) and the directCP asymmetry inB 0→K∗0γ
The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0→K⁎0γ and B0s→ϕγ has been measured using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 of pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=7TeV. The value obtained is
B(B0→K⁎0γ)B(B0s→ϕγ)=1.23±0.06(stat.)±0.04(syst.)±0.10(fs/fd),
where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is associated with the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average value for B(B0→K⁎0γ), the branching fraction B(B0s→ϕγ) is measured to be (3.5±0.4)×10−5.
The direct CP asymmetry in B0→K⁎0γ decays has also been measured with the same data and found to be
ACP(B0→K⁎0γ)=(0.8±1.7(stat.)±0.9(syst.))%.
Both measurements are the most precise to date and are in agreement with the previous experimental results and theoretical expectations

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
