Through the analysis of a set of antiorganicistic metaphors, such as wave, spiral, rainbow, contact, current in linguistics at the beginning of 20th century to describe the vagueness of the linguistic boundaries, this paper discusses a neglected chapter in the history of linguistics, characterized by a transnational view of languages. The author focuses on Hugo Schuchardt’s criticism of essentialism in the classification of languages. This position on one side links S. to Locke’s critique of realism about species, and on the other makes him an isolated forerunner of a sociolinguistic and pragmatic approach to language
The representation of the self and one's own story by witnesses who survived the horrors of history leads to an outcome in which the borders between history and story, subjective memory and archival documents, real events and individual perception of them, are always highly blurred and far from clear and well defined. Through Vittore Bocchetta's (b. 1918) own oral and written account of his life -in which history and story, memory and myth are intertwined- and its rewriting by Giuliana Adamo in her volume Una vita contro (2012), the author has tried to legitimise the individual account with an accurate verification against the counter history offered by archival documents. Thus the witness subjective voice becomes part of a polyphony which historians must try to comprehend
Abstract : The Fontamara novel, by Italian writer Ignazio Silone (1900-1978), is first published in 1933, by Verlag Oprecht und Helbling from Zurich, with a translation into German by Nettie Sutro. For political and ideological reasons, the text is prevented from circulating officially inside the Italian literary system, during the years of fascism. The author himself experiences a period of exile and cannot return to Italy, where he would be arrested by the fascist police, under the accusation of being a subversive element. In Brazil, the novel is translated by Aristides Lobo and published by Cultura Política in 1935, two years after its first edition. While considering the political tensions and social and economic changes taking place in Brazil in the 30s, and the role of translated literature within a culture, this study investigates the main motivations that lead to the publication of Fontamara in 1935, in Brazil. These reflections are made from the perspective of translation as rewriting, a conjecture proposed among other theorists by André Lefevere (2007), who deals with the role of rewriting within a literary system. The complex process of translation involves both the figure of the translator (rewriter ), as a mediator, as well as that of other agents who determine what kind of text may or may not circulate among the reading public, according to a scheme that Lefevere calls the patronage system
Probabilistic White Matter Tractography
Since its initial development in the mid-1980's, and wide accessibility to perform diffusion MRI on all MRI scanners, the use of diffusion MRI has exploded. Nearly every MRI centre carries out diffusion MRI of some kind. Obtaining good quality diffusion MRI and making sound and robust inferences from the data is not trivial, however, and involves a long chain of events from ensuring that the hardware is performing optimally, the pulse sequence is carefully designed, the acquisition is optimal, the data quality is maximized while artifacts are minimized, the appropriate post-processing is used, and, where appropriate, the appropriate statistical testing is used, and the data are interpreted correctly. Professor Derek Jones, a world authority on diffusion MRI, has assembled most of the world's leading scientists and clinicians developing and applying diffusion MRI to produce an authorship list that reads like a "Who's Who" of the field and a definitive, didactic and essential reference volume for those working with diffusion MRI. Renowned for the clarity of his presentations, Prof Jones has worked closely with each author to ensure that the material is presented in the best possible and accessible manner. The book is aimed at those wishing to really understand where the diffusion signal comes from, and obtain a thorough grounding in the theory, methods and applications of diffusion MRI. The aim here is not to 'skim the surface' - but to dig deep into each topic - so that a thorough grounding is obtained. In assembling these topics (many of which have never previously appeared in a text book on the topic), Prof Jones carefully balances theoretical treatments with practical considerations. Destined to be a modern classic, this definitive and richly illustrated reference volume deserves a place on the bookshelf of all imaging centres
Protected area visitor data collection and management: Emerging issues and gaps in current Australian practices
Protected area agencies are charged with the preservation, conservation and management of areas including wilderness, national parks and forests. These agencies are faced with increasing visitor numbers and decreasing budgets at a time where activities like tourism have to be managed alongside their traditional roles as natural resource managers. This paper reports on the outcomes of the first stage of a research project that seeks to guide a nationally consistent approach to visitor use data collection for protected area agencies. First, the paper provides a background literature review of approaches to visitor use data collection for protected area agencies. Second, the paper outlines the participatory action research approach used in the study where thirteen protected area agencies are collaborators in the research process. This approach ensures that the protected areas agencies data needs are central to the research outcomes and recognises the pragmatic organisational cultural issues associated with visitor data collection, management and use. The research process incorporates organisational networking at all levels from head office, regions, branches and individual parks involving management information systems, interviews, focus groups, presentations, briefings and follow-up contact. Third, the paper then presents the emergent themes that examine the issues and gaps in current visitor data collection, management and use systems. The paper concludes with discussion of the challenges to developing a national system of visitor data collection and use
Uses of a pandemic: Forging the identities of influenza and virus research in interwar Britain
This paper counters the tendency to retrospectively viralise the 1918-19 pandemic and to gloss the important historiographical point that, in Britain, such knowledge was in-the-making between 1918 and 1933. It traces the genesis of influenza's virus identity to British efforts in 1918-19 to specify the cause of the pandemic and it examines how, in the 1920s, the British Medical Research Council used the connection between a virus and the pandemic to justify the development of virus research and to make influenza a core problem around which it was organised. It shows that the organisation of medical virus research was inextricably linked to the pandemic before the actual discovery of flu virus in 1933. Recognising that the relationship between the virus and the disease itself has a history demands we rethink the pandemic's medical scientific legacy and the crucial role of virus research in shaping its history. © The 2011 Author
The problem of blasphemy: The fourth gospel and early Jewish understandings
This thesis argues that the Johannine Jewish Christians—those who produced, preserved, and propagated the Fourth Gospel—were perceived to be blasphemers of God because of their exalted claims for Jesus and their disparaging remarks against the Ιουδαιοι. It was probably on this basis that Jewish Christians were excommunicated from the synagogue (cf Jn 9:22; 12:42; 16:2). We take three steps to establish this claim. First, we review J. Louis Martyn's hypothesis that the Johannine Christians were expelled from the synagogue as a result of the Birkat ha-Minim. We argue that the Birkat ha-Minim is problematic, suggest that an alternative hypothesis is necessary, and propose that accusations of blasphemy would provide an alternative explanation. Next, we survey recent research on blasphemy, offer an analysis of the historical, social, and literary context of the Fourth Gospel, and present a semantic analysis of βλασφημέωand related terms. Second, we probe seven Jewish traditions pertaining to blasphemy. We examine the prohibitions against cursing God (Exod 22:27[28]), "naming the name" (Lev 24:10- 24), and sinning with a high hand (Num 15:30-31). Then, we track some of the most notorious blasphemers, including Sennacherib (2 Kgs 18:1—19:37), Antiochus (1 Mace 1:20—2:14), Nicanor (2 Mace 14:16—15:37), and an unnamed Egyptian ruler 2.123-132).Third, we examine three Johannine claims—that Jesus is equal with God, that Jesus is the New Temple, and that the ' Ιουδαιοι are of the devil -and argue that non-believing Jews would have regarded these claims as blasphemous and would have expelled anyone from the synagogue who proclaimed them
DNA Glycosylases Involved in Base Excision Repair May Be Associated with Cancer Risk in BRCA1 and BRCA2 Mutation Carriers.
Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes involved in the DNA Base Excision Repair (BER) pathway could be
associated with cancer risk in carriers of mutations in the high-penetrance susceptibility genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, given the relation of synthetic lethality that exists between one of the components of the BER pathway, PARP1 (poly ADP ribose
polymerase), and both BRCA1 and BRCA2. In the present study, we have performed a comprehensive analysis of 18 genes involved in BER using a tagging SNP approach in a large series of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers. 144 SNPs were analyzed in a two stage study involving 23,463 carriers from the CIMBA consortium (the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1 and BRCA2). Eleven SNPs showed evidence of association with breast and/or ovarian cancer at p,0.05 in the combined analysis. Four of the five genes for which strongest evidence of association was observed were DNA glycosylases. The strongest evidence was for rs1466785 in the NEIL2 (endonuclease VIII-like 2) gene (HR: 1.09, 95% CI (1.03– 1.16), p = 2.761023) for association with breast cancer risk in BRCA2 mutation carriers, and rs2304277 in the OGG1 (8-guanine DNA glycosylase) gene, with ovarian cancer risk in BRCA1 mutation carriers (HR: 1.12 95%CI: 1.03–1.21,
p = 4.861023). DNA glycosylases involved in the first steps of the BER pathway may be associated with cancer risk in BRCA1/ 2 mutation carriers and should be more comprehensively studied
Following his personal and artistic life, the author presents Russian cultural and artistic movements from the end of 19. to the twenties of the 20. by means of the state of the art research and study in Russia. Many documents in this issue are still unpublished and unknown in Western countries. The uniqueness of this work is the philological reborn of Golovin’ s and Meyerhold’ s most well known mise-en scènes in the Imperial Theatres from 1908 to 191
