No full text
This article considers the historical and philosophical significance of the Neoplatonic commentators on Aristotle. The authors set Richard Sorabji's recent Sourcebook on the commentators within a wider backgroung, which covers the commentators' contribution in the shaping of late antique philosophy and their posterity in the Islamic philosophical tradition. After an introductory section (1) regarding the current status of research in this area, the authors tackle the following issues: (2) Plotinus, the commentators and the development of late antique thought; (3) the Sourcebook and Islamic Philosophy. Riccardo Chiaradonna is co-author of section (1) and author of section (2), where the reception of Aristotle's school treatises is set out as a key feature in the transition from Post Hellenistic to Late Antique philosophy. Plotinus has a pivotal position in this process and the Neoplatonic incorporation of Aristotle's treatises would have not taken place without Plotinus' contribution

Female genital tract tumors are common and cause significant cancer morbidity and mortality worldwide. The prevalence of neoplasms according to their anatomical location depends on various cancer-associated predisposing factors. The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of female reproductive system tumors among eastern Libyan females according to anatomical site and patient age. Gynecological specimens received in the pathology department of Al-Bayda Medical Center (AMC)-Libya, were studied, and the prevalence rate for each type of tumor was compared to regional and worldwide data. Retrospective hospital-based research to analyze data of 936 gynecological specimens diagnosed over six years (January 2014-January 2020) at the Department of Pathology, Libya. A total of 936 gynecological specimens were reviewed corresponding to patients between 15 to 70 years of age. The majority of cases (293 cases; 45.9%) were endometrial tumors, leiomyomas (190 cases; 26.9%), ovarian tumors (214 cases; 33.4%) and gestational trophoblastic diseases (21 cases; 3.2%). The least common tumors were uterine cervical tumors (15 cases; 2.1%). Benign tumors were most frequent in the second and fourth decades of life, while malignant neoplasms were most frequent from the fifth to eighth decades of life. Among eastern Libyan females from Al-Bayda region, the gynecological tumors with the highest incidence rate were endometrial tumors, followed by ovarian serous cystadenomas, then leiomyomas, gestational trophoblastic diseases and lastly uterine cervical tumor

Search for excited electrons and muons in √s=8 TeV proton–proton collisions with the ATLAS detector

No full text
The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to search for excited electrons and excited muons in the channel pp → ℓℓ* → ℓℓγ, assuming that excited leptons are produced via contact interactions. The analysis is based on 13 fb[superscript −1] of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. No evidence for excited leptons is found, and a limit is set at the 95% credibility level on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the excited-lepton mass m[subscript ℓ*]. For m[subscript ℓ*] ≥ 0.8 TeV, the respective upper limits on σB(ℓ* → ℓγ) are 0.75 and 0.90 fb for the e* and μ* searches. Limits on σB are converted into lower bounds on the compositeness scale Λ. In the special case where Λ = m[subscript ℓ*], excited-electron and excited-muon masses below 2.2 TeV are excluded.United States. The principal aim of this thesis is to assess the performance of Imam Salim b.Rashid and the Imamate revival in Oman during the second decade of the 20th century. It presents biographical information about Imam Salim, with special reference to the military and political policies by which he established and consolided his Imamate in the Interior Province, and his relations with the Sultan and the latter's British supporters. An attempt is also made to explore the relationship between the Imam and the Omani tribes and to evaluate his administrative success. This thesis comprises eight chapters, and the introduction and conclusion. The introduction reviews the relevant literature on the topic. The first chapter describes the geographical setting and provides a historical background, relating to three principal matters: the rise of the Iba<;liyyah and the development of the Imamate in Oman; the events in Oman after Sd. Sa'id's death up to 1913; and the effects of the First World War. The second chapter seeks to give an account of the career of Imam Salim's life and the Imamate revival. The third chapter discusses the manner in which the Imam was elected, private and public allegiance (bay'ah) and the Imam's aims and policy programme. Chapter Four deals with the Imam's military operations and the spread of his authority over Oman. Chapter Five examines the attempts at negotiation between the Imam and the Sultan, and the role of the British Government and the local figures in this regard. Chapter Six is devoted to a discussion of the role of the tribes in support of Imam Salim, and the extent of the Imam's influence over these tribes. Chapter Seven assesses the Imam's administrative machinery, including the political system, the bureaucracy, education policy, and financial apparatus. Chapter Eight examines the causes behind the assassination of Imam Salim and the signing of the Treaty of al-Sib. In the conclusion, we present the findings of the research as they have emerged from the assessment of the course of events in Oman. We have said that the Omanis succeeded in reviving the Imamate and elected Imam Salim al-KharU~i who devoted his efforts to establish the foundations of the state, and peace prevailed in the country after the treaty of al-Sib in 1920

Certain compositions of abstract polynomials and their pseudo-derivatives

AbstractThe present study is motivated by some results due to N. Zaheer and M. Alam (Zeros of polar-composite polynomials in algebraically closed fields, Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 40 (1980), 527–552) and to a classical result of M. Marden (Geometry of polynomials, in “Math. Surveys,” Vol. 3, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 1966). In fact, we determine the location of null-sets of certain compositions of abstract polynomials and their pseudo-derivatives in vector spaces. Our main theorem generalizes simultaneously the corresponding results of Zaheer and Alam and of Marden, and furnishes several new interesting special cases, some being supported by the nice geometry of the complex plane

A Semiotic Analysis of Novel Faces in Hot Water by Abdallah Tayeh

No full text
The aim of this study is to investigate the semiotics of the cover, title, characters and the settings of Faces in Hot Water (1996) by the Palestinian writer Abdallah Tayeh. The study shows how important is semiotics in aesthetically and cognitively shaping the novel. The study adopts a qualitative research method by applying semiotic analysis to create a new understanding of the literary text and its interpretations. Built on semiotic analysis, the writer embodies the prevailing norms, traditions and culture of the Palestinian society. The writer also reveals semantic signs that are not visible. He in fact captured the implied meaning behind the semiotic text. The research shows that Tayeh uses many semiotic signs to refer to the various concepts of issues related to the Palestinian culture, society and beliefs

Hyperfine splitting of [Al VI] 3.66 mu m and the Al isotopic ratio in NGC 6302

No full text
The core of planetary nebula NGC 6302 is filled with high-excitation photoionized gas at low expansion velocities. It represents a unique astrophysical situation in which to search for hyperfine structure (HFS) in coronal emission lines from highly ionized species. HFS is otherwise blended by thermal or velocity broadening. Spectra containing [Al vr] 3.66 mu m P-3(2) <- P-3(1), obtained with Phoenix on Gemini South at resolving powers of up to 75000, resolve the line into five hyperfine components separated by 20-60 km s(-1) as a result of the coupling of the I = 5/2 nuclear spin of Al-27 with the total electronic angular momentum J. The isotope Al-26 has a different nuclear spin of I = 5, and a different HFS, which allows us to place a 3 sigma upper limit on the Al-26/Al-27 abundance ratio of 1/33. We measure the HFS magnetic dipole coupling constants for [Al vr], and provide the first estimates of the electric quadrupole HFS coupling constants obtained through astronomical observations of an atomic transition

L∞-approximation in probability spaces

AbstractLet (Ω, A, μ) be a probability space and let B be a subsigma algebra of A. Let A= L∞Ω, A, μ , let A= L∞Ω, B, μ, and let f ϵ A. It is shown that best L∞-approximations of f by elements of B comprise an interval in B; that is, there exists f,fϵB such that a function g ϵ B is a best L∞-approximation to f if and only if f⩽ g ⩽ f a.e. on Ω. The difference, f − f, of f and f is completely characterized in terms of special sets that have been developed in [2]. Then it is established that the best best L∞-approximation, fB,∞, to f by elements of B is the average of f and f, where the function fB,∞ is defined by fB,∞(ω) limp → ∞fB,P(ξ) and fB,P denotes the best Lp-approximation to f elements of Lp(Ω, B, μ)
