About Lazarillo’s Authorship or, again, about Juan de Valdés
By analyzing linguistic recurrences, biographical data, and intertextual connections between El Lazarillo and Valdés’ writings such as Diálogo de la doctrina cristiana and Diálogo de la lengua, the conclusion is reached that, if the author of Lazarillo was not Valdés, that writer was, in fact, someone uniquely close to Valdés’ biography, personality, thought and literary trajectory
Detective fiction in Cuban society and culture.
PhDThe object of this thesis is to reach towards an understanding of Cuban society through a
study of its detective fiction and more particularly contemporary Cuban society through
the novels of the author and critic, Leonardo Padura Fuentes.
The method has been to trace the development of Cuban detective writing and to
read Padura Fuentes in the light of the work of twentieth century Western European
literary critics and philosophers including Raymond Williams, Antonio Gramsci, Terry
Eagleton, Roland Barthes, Jean Paul Sartre, Michel Foucault, Jean François Lyotard and
Jean Baudrillard in order to gain a better understanding of the social and historical
context from which this genre emerged.
By concentrating on the literary texts, I have explored readings which lead out into
an analysis of the broader philosophical, political and historical issues raised by the
Cuban revolution. Since it deals primarily with modes of deviance and notions of legality
and justice within the context of the modern state, detective fiction is particularly well
suited to this type of investigation. The intention is to show how this is as valid in the
Cuban context as it is in advanced capitalist societies where such research has already
been carried out with some success.
The thesis comprises an introduction, ten chapters and a conclusion. The chapters
are divided into three sections. Chapters 1 to 3 attempt a broad theoretical, historical and
socio-political analysis of the cultural reality within which the Cuban revolutionary
detective genre emerged. Chapters 4 to 6 analyse the Cuban detective narrative from its
inception in the early part of the twentieth century until the emergence of Leonardo
Padura Fuentes as the foremost exponent of the genre in Cuba after 1991. Chapters 7-
10 concentrate upon the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes, offering a reading of his
detective tetralogy informed by the preceding discussion.
The contribution made by the thesis to knowledge of the subject is to build upon the
work of Seymour Menton and Amelia S. Simpson on the development of the Cuban
detective novel and to provide analyses of the pre-Revolutionary Cuban detective
narrative and the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes for the first time in the English
language. The thesis concludes that the study of this popular genre in Cuba is of crucial
importance to the scholar who wishes to reach as full an understanding of the social
dynamics within that society as possible. In particular, it proves that Cuban detective
fiction provides a useful barometer of social change which records the shifts in the Cuban
Zeitgeist that have taken place over the past century
Constructs of culture: Argentina\u27s struggle with its identity
The dissertation deals with the difficulties of self-description affecting the Argentine Republic from the moment of its independence from Spanish rule in 1810 to the late twentieth century. Concentrating on the cultural and sociological essays of Juan Bautista Alberdi, Esteban Echeverría, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento; Bartolomé Mitre, Eduardo Wilde, José Ingenieros, Manuel Ugarte; Ricardo Rojas, Leopoldo Lugones, Jorge Luis Borges; Ezequiel Martinez Estrada, Eduardo Mallea, José Ingenieros; Victor Massuh, Julio Mafud, and Ernesto Sábato; the dissertation provides a detailed analysis of the various ideological tenets followed by these authors in their efforts to influence or define the Argentine collective existence. Through consideration of the intellectual environments in which these essayists wrote, the dissertation establishes the vinculum of author to time, thereby refuting attempts at universality by individual essayists. It thereafter urges that these authors\u27 works be considered in their totality as an approximation at a definition of Argentine culture, arguing that comprehensibility is accessible only through the aggregation of all Argentine experiences in all times. Post-colonial studies offer the dissertation a theoretical basis for the analysis of immigration, (dis)unity within the Republic, as well as the roles of continuity and rupture in the emergence of Argentina as a national group with its struggles to recognize its location in relation to the various Western European and indigenous American cultures. The dissertation concludes that many attempts at national definition are examples of cultural creationism, supported by mythicizing historical persons, events, and lifestyles. Without attempting to define Argentine culture, the dissertation positions it within a marginal global community opposite the central metropolises
First observation of the decay Bs0→K*0K*0
The first observation of the decay B0s→K∗0K∗0 is reported using 35 pb−1 of data collected by LHCb in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A total of 49.8±7.5 B0s→(K+π−)(K−π+) events are observed within ±50 MeV/c2 of the B0s mass and 746 MeV/c2 < mKπ < 1046 MeV/c2, mostly coming from a resonant B0s→K∗0K∗0 signal. The branching fraction and the CP-averaged K∗0 longitudinal polarization fraction are measured to be B(B0s→K∗0K∗0)=(2.81±0.46(stat.)±0.45(syst.)±0.34(fs/ fd))×10−5 and fL =0.31±0.12(stat.)±0.04(syst.)

¡Aquí no hay traidor ninguno! Leales y comuneros en la Argentina de Ruy Díaz de Guzmán
The article analyzes the full text of the Argentina. History of the Discovery and Conquest of the Rio de la Plata, written by the mestizo Ruy Díaz de Guzman to 1612. The analysis of examining the political scene of early settlement in the River Plate region and, in particular, the conflict is carried facing local authorities, elected in America without direct intervention of the king and the metropolitan authorities, elected by the king and the Council of the Indies. From this overview, they considered a series of discursive strategies developed by the author to highlight the productivity and effectiveness of the political project of his grandfather, Domingo Martínez de Irala, while local authority, but lawfully constituted under the laws emanated Crown. The article also discusses transcription performing Ruy Díaz in his famous Royal Decree of 12 September 1537, which empowered the people of Asuncion to choose governor by voting, after the death of Pedro de Mendoza.El artículo analiza el texto completo de la Argentina. Measurement of the ratio of prompt χ c to J / ψ production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV
The prompt production of charmonium χ c and J / ψ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The χ c and J / ψ mesons are identified through their decays χ c → J / ψ γ and J / ψ → μ + μ - using 36 pb - 1 of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for χ c and J / ψ, σ (χ c → J / ψ γ) / σ (J / ψ), is determined as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum in the range 2 < p T J / ψ < 15 GeV / c. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low p T J / ψ region
