Extracting Boer-Mulders functions from p+D Drell-Yan processes
We extract the Boer- Mulders functions of valence and sea quarks in the proton from unpolarized p + D Drell- Yan data measured by the FNAL E866 Collaboration. Using these Boer- Mulders functions, we calculate the cos2 phi asymmetries in unpolarized pp Drell- Yan processes, both for the FNAL E866/ NuSea and the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider experiments. Measurement of the differential and double-differential Drell-Yan cross sections in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV
Measurements of the differential and double-differential Drell-Yan cross sections are presented using an integrated luminosity of 4.5 (4.8) fb−1 in the dimuon (dielectron) channel of proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at s√ = 7 TeV. The measured inclusive cross section in the Z-peak region (60–120 GeV) is σ(ℓℓ) = 986.4 ± 0.6 (stat.) ± 5.9 (exp. syst.) ± 21.7 (th. syst.) ± 21.7 (lum.) pb for the combination of the dimuon and dielectron channels. Differential cross sections dσ/dm for the dimuon, dielectron, and combined channels are measured in the mass range 15 to 1500 GeV and corrected to the full phase space. Results are also presented for the measurement of the double-differential cross section d2σ/dm d|y| in the dimuon channel over the mass range 20 to 1500 GeV and absolute dimuon rapidity from 0 to 2.4. These measurements are compared to the predictions of perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading orders using various sets of parton distribution functions

Using performance assessment in secondary school mathematics: an empirical study in a Singapore classroom
This article reports an exploratory study on using performance assessment in mathematics instruction in a high-performing secondary school in Singapore. An intact mathematics class participated in the study, and received chapter-based performance tasks as intervention during regular mathematics lessons for about one and a half school years. The performance tasks used included authentic and/or open-ended tasks. The students’ academic achievements and attitudes in mathematics were compared with a comparison class that did not receive the intervention. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected, mainly through questionnaire surveys, performance task tests, conventional school exams, and interviews with students and teachers. The results suggest that the students receiving the intervention performed significantly better than their counterparts in solving conventional exam problems, and in general they also showed more positive changes in attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics learning. The students from the experimental class also expressed positive views about the benefits of using performance tasks in promoting their ability in higher order thinking, though no statistically significant difference was detected between the two classes of students in solving unconventional tasks before and after intervention. DIETARY CONDITIONS AND DIFFERENTIAL ACCESS TO FOOD RESOURCES AMONG THE VARIOUS CLASSES DURING THE HAN PERIOD
In this thesis, I study how food resources and dietary conditions were determined by social and economic status during the Han period in China, B.C. 206~A.D.220. Even though earlier scholars have published research concerning the Chinese food culture of this period, these studies were limited in that they only illustrated the dietary culture of the upper class or the available food resources in one geographic area. Also, without any persuasive data, it has been assumed by these earlier scholars that there were big differences in food resources and food consumption between the upper and lower classes. In this thesis, for comparison among the classes, I divide the social and economic classes into five stratified groups: nobles, officials, peasants, soldiers and convicts. After a brief introduction of the nature of each social class, I examine the food resources and nutritional condition of each group using information such as the wealth and income of each group, the market price of food resources, the agricultural products of peasants, and the amount of food distribution to soldiers and convicts. I found these data from archaeological remains, received historical records and pictorial data, and excavated texts. This research shows a broader view of Chinese dietary condition focusing not only on the variety of food resources of nobles, but also on the different food accessibilities among the officials, and the food deficiencies of peasants. It also deals with the situations of food supply for soldiers and convicts in an effort to reveal the true dietary consumption and nutritional conditions for all Chinese. This research proves that the various classes during the Han period in China had different food resources and dietary conditions
Magnetostructural investigations into an S=1/2 sheet and a tetranuclear butterfly cluster
We present a detailed analysis of the magnetic properties of two Cu(II) coordination compounds with the tetrazole-1-acetate ligand (t1a), previously reported in literature by Yu et al. [Q. Yu, X. Zhang, H. Bian, H. Liang, B. Zhao, S. Yan, D. Liao, Cryst. Growth Des. 8 (2008) 1140] and simultaneously synthesised independently by ourselves. We focus on methods of describing the susceptibility and magnetisation of a ferromagnetically-coupled S = 1/2 square network (2) and a tetranuclear S = 1/2 'butterfly' cluster (4) as well as discussion of the energy levels of such a cluster
Flavor separation of the Boer-Mulders function from unpolarized pi(-)p and pi D- Drell-Yan processes
We show that measuring the cos2 phi angular dependence in unpolarized Drell-Yan processes with pi(-) beams colliding on proton and deuteron targets can determine the ratio of the Boer-Mulders functions for d and u quarks inside the proton h(1)(perpendicular to,d)/h(1)(perpendicular to,u), which is still lack of theoretical constraint. The comparison of the cos2 phi asymmetries measured in unpolarized pi(-)p and pi D- Drell-Yan processes, which are accessible at CERN by the COMPASS Collaboration, can help to discriminate whether h(1)(perpendicular to) effects or QCD vacuum effects are preferred by data.
