Deposition Growth Modes From Numerical Simulations

No full text
We present results of simulations of deposition growth at finite temperatures using a ballistic deposition rule with continuous hopping of surface particles. We examine the pattern of growth as a function of the physical parameters of hopping rate and substrate temperature, and identify the different regions of layer-by-layer, fractal-cluster, multilayer, and scaling growth as functions of the growth parameters

Organizational Learning and Marketing Capability Development: A Study of Charity Retailing Operation of British Social Enterprises

No full text
Social enterprise is a hybrid form of profit- and social benefit-seeking organization whereby traditional nonprofit organizations pursue both their social mission and business opportunities. To embrace this new strategic direction shift, the nonprofit organizations need to develop new competences that will enable them to respond to the changes in the business model. The article investigates the learning mechanisms through which social enterprises develop a marketing capability to deploy their resources in the marketplace as the drivers of competitive advantage in their commercial practice. We study eight cases of UK-based charity retailers, in order to address the role of knowledge accumulation, articulation and codification process in the evolution of marketing capability development. We identify, amongst other things that the critical process of organizational learning for social enterprise is to transfer the experience into organization specific knowledge under the social aspects of constraints

Measurement of the D+/- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions

No full text
The asymmetry in the production cross-section \sigma of D+/- mesons, A_P = (\sigma(D+) - \sigma(D-))/(\sigma(D+) + \sigma(D-)), is measured in bins of pseudorapidity \eta and transverse momentum p_T within the acceptance of the LHCb detector. The result is obtained with a sample of D+ -> K_S pi+ decays corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^-1, collected in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. When integrated over the kinematic range 2.0 K_S pi+ decay is negligible. No significant dependence on \eta or p_T is observed

Ko au te whenua, te whenua ko au – I am the land, the land is me: An autoethnographic investigation of a secondary school teacher’s experience seeking to enrich learning in outdoor education for Māori students.

This thesis is my story as an outdoor educator, as a researcher, and a co-participant reflecting on my own actions and experiences as well as those of my students. In this autoethnography I share my revelations and tensions in my role as an outdoor education teacher seeking to enrich the experiences of Māori students. Māori culture and history have largely been ignored in the outdoor education classrooms and environments of Aotearoa New Zealand. After teaching the subject for ten years I didn’t perceive that I was perpetuating the same invisibility in my own outdoor education course. Over this time a number of questions that had fermented at the back of my mind came to the fore; ‘why are so few Māori students opting to take outdoor education as a senior secondary school subject?’ and ‘how can I make the subject of outdoor education more desirable and appealing to Māori?’ A place-responsive approach incorporates and values traditional ways of learning through the notion of place and the stories attached to them. The cultural context of learning about and through place has the potential to provide learning opportunities that are relevant and meaningful to all learners but particularly Māori. Place-responsive pedagogies allow outdoor educators to create an environment where language, knowledge, culture and values are normal, valid and legitimate – contexts where Māori students can be themselves. Through this research I have found that the implementation of a place responsive approach has had significant implications for Year twelve outdoor education at Mount Maunganui College. The improvement in Māori student achievement and numbers selecting the subject have been affirming. Ko au te whenua, te whenua ko au – I am the land, the land is m

Spatial learning and long-term memory impairments in RasGrf1 KO, Pttg1 KO, and double KO mice

No full text
Background: RasGrf1 is a guanine-nucleotide releasing factor that enhances Ras activity. Human PTTG1 is an oncoprotein found in pituitary tumors and later identified as securin, a protein isolated from yeast with a reported role in chromosome separation. It has been suggested that RasGrf1 is an important upstream component of signal transduction pathways regulating Pttg1 expression and controlling beta cell development and their physiological response. At memory formation level, there are contradictory data regarding the role of RasGrf1, while Pttg1 has not been previously studied. Both proteins are expressed in the mammalian hippocampus, which is one of the key brain areas for spatial learning and memory. Objective: The aim of this work was to study a potential link between RasGrf1 and Pttg1 in memory formation. Method: Spatial learning and memory test in the Pttg1 KO, RasGrf1 KO, and Pttg1-RasGrf1 double KO and their correspondent WT mice using a Barnes maze. Results: In comparison with the WT control mice, Pttg1 KO mice learned how to solve the task in a less efficient way, suggesting problems in memory consolidation. RasGrf1 KO mice performance was similar to controls, and they learned to use the best searching strategy. Double KO mice reached a better spatial learning level than WT. Conclusion: A role for Pttg1 in memory consolidation/formation is suggested, while our RasGrf1 KO mice do not show hippocampus associated memory defects

Acute rejection is associated with antibodies to non-Gal antigens in baboons using Gal-knockout pig kidneys

We transplanted kidneys from α1,3-galactosyltransferase knockout (GalT-KO) pigs into six baboons using two different immunosuppressive regimens, but most of the baboons died from severe acute humoral xenograft rejection. Circulating induced antibodies to non-Gal antigens were markedly elevated at rejection, which mediated strong complement-dependent cytotoxicity against GalT-KO porcine target cells. These data suggest that antibodies to non-Gal antigens will present an additional barrier to transplantation of organs from GalT-KO pigs to humans. © 2005 Nature Publishing Group

We report a study of the decays B -> D-s1(2536)+ (D) over bar (()*()), where (D) over bar (()*()) is (D) over bar (0), D- or D*(-), using a sample of 657 x 10(6)B (B) over bar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. The branching fractions of the decays B+ -> D-s1(2536)(+) (D) over bar (0), B-0 -> D-s1(2536)D-+(-) and B-0 -> D-s1(2536)D+*(-) multiplied by that of D-s1(2536)(+) -> (D*K-0(+) + D*K-+(0)) are found to be (3.97 +/- 0.85 +/- 0.56) x 10(-4), (2.75 +/- 0.62 +/- 0.36) x 10(-4) and (5.01 +/- 1.21 +/- 0.70) x 10(-4), respectively. The ratio B(D-s1 -> D*K-0(+))/B(D-s1 -> D*K-+(0)) is measured to be 0.88 +/- 0.24 +/- 0.08
