Theme vowels and a root-based approach to morphology: evidence from Brazilian Portuguese

    Get PDF
This research makes use of data from thematic vowels interacting with diminutives and metaphony in Brazilian Portuguese to argue for a grammatical configuration in which morphemes can merge directly at the root. This article, therefore, offers evidence in favor of an approach to morphological theory based on the root as the primitive unit, as proposed by Distributed Morphology. In short, this paper argues that, by starting from the root, we have simple answers to complex phonological problems. Therefore, this work diverges from theories that argue that the stem is the primitive, and which assume that minimal category-neutral units are unmotivated and unnecessary. This research makes use of data from thematic vowels interacting with diminutives and metaphony in Brazilian Portuguese to argue for a grammatical configuration in which morphemes can merge directly at the root. Individuation, counting, and measuring in the grammar of Kadiwéu

This work approaches some grammatical differences in the linguistic expression of counting, measuring, aggregating, and quantity comparison and partition in Kadiwéu, a classifier language spoken in Brazil. This paper brings evidence via the grammar of comparison and partition that the counting/measuring distinction is a genuine grammatical distinction. This work also shows that aggregate nouns in Kadiwéu pattern grammatically neither with substance nouns nor with naturally atomic object nouns. That is, Kadiwéu has a specific grammatical expression for groups as atoms20223925

The native languages of Brazil, already severely endangered before the pandemic, face increased menace from the death of native elders of COVID-19. Our project aims to advance inclusive digital innovation by developing a computational platform for indigenous language materials that are culturally and grammatically significant. These language materials will provide a digital foundation for enhanced bilingual education, intergenerational connections, and the transmission of ancestral knowledge in indigenous communities.

    Get PDF
Este artigo analisa casos de aparente violação da Condição C em Kadiwéu e defende que o fenômeno é gerado por backward raising; isto é, alçamento não aberto de sujeito para sujeito. Embora a condição C não seja realmente violada, uma vez que o fenômeno envolve movimento, ela parece ser para quem está adquirindo tal língua. Assim, além de analisar tais estruturas que aparentam violar a Condição C, este artigo explora algumas consequências para a aquisição e contato linguístico

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
