Shadowgraphy of the end-effects regime produced by clustered rockets

    No full text
The plume produced by a cluster of two high area-ratio thrust optimized parabolic contour nozzles is visualized by way of retroreflective shadowgraphy. Both steady and transient operations of the nozzles (start-up and shut-down) were conducted in the anechoic chamber and high speed flow facility at The University of Texas at Austin. Both nozzles exhibit free shock separated flow, restricted shock separated flow and an end-effects-regime prior to flowing full. Radon transforms of the shadowgraphy images are used to identify the locations in the flow where sound waves are being generated. During these off design operations of the nozzles, most sound waves are generated by turbulence interactions with the shock cells located in the supersonic annular plume. During the end-effects-regime, this supersonic annular plume is shown to flap violently, thus providing a first principals understanding of the sources of most intense loads during engine ignition

The loyalties of general Vicente Rojo. A military faithfull to his profession

    No full text
Para él fue una memoria afligida.[eng] Despite his conservatism, General Vicente Rojo (1894-1966) was loyal to the Span- ish Republic, while other colleagues at the Military Academy of Toledo and friends joined the self- called National Army, such as Commander Emilio Alamán. This is the human story of Vicente Rojo during and after the Civil War. The article reconstructs Rojo decisions and anxieties from his testi- mony, embodied in some books, but also in an unpublished autobiography. Through interviews with Rojo family members, the author reconstructed some episodes of everyday life during the war and exile to highlight the human dimension of this soldier at critical moments. if the exile was a bitter refuge, back to home became a curse for General Rojo, as we can be seen in his memorialist writ- ings, for his isolation and misfortune, and for what he considered a lack of companionship from some of his former comrades. For him, it was a sorrowful memory

Integrating periurban agrarian ecosystem services into spatial planning to cope with urban pressure

    No full text
According to Corine Land Cover databases, in Europe between 1990 and 2000,77% of new artificial surfaces were built on previous agrarian areas. Urban sprawl ¡s far from being under control, between 2000 and 2006 new artificial land has grown in larger proportion than the decade before. In Spain, like in most countries, the impact of urban sprawl during the last decades has been especially significant in periurban agrarian spaces: between 2000 and 2006, 73% of new artificial surfaces were built on previous agrarian areas. The indirect impact of this trend has been even more relevant, as the expectations of appreciation in the value of land after new urban developments reinforce the ongoing trend of abandonment of agricultural land. In Madrid between 1980 and 2000 the loss of agricultural land due to abandonment of exploitation was 2-fold that due to transformation into urban areas. By comparing four case studies: Valladolild, Montpellier.Florence and Den Haag, this paper explores if urban and territorial planning may contribute to reduce urban pressure on the hinterland. In spite of their diversity, these regions have in common a relative prosperity arising from their territorial endowments, though their landscapes are still under pressure. The three last ones have been working for years on mainstream concepts like multifunctional agriculture. The systematic comparison and the analysis of successful approaches provide some clues on how to reconsider urban planning in order to preserve agricultural land. The final remarks highlight the context in which public commitment, legal protection instruments and financial strategies may contribute to the goals of urban, peri-urban or regional planning about fostering agrarian ecosystem service

El príncipe rojo (2005) from Almudena Guzmán: eroticism and tradition

    No full text
Asimismo, otro de nuestros objetivos será revisar si todas estas configuraciones del erotismo persisten en otros poemarios de la autora o si, por el contrario, son exclusivas de El príncipe rojo (2005).In this paper, we will analyse the collection of poems El príncipe rojo (2005) by the Madridborn Almudena Guzmán, paying special attention to the ways in which eroticism is approached. For this purpose, we will divide our study into several sections that will recover the different themes that are linked to eroticism in the collection. Within each of these sections, we intend not only to carry out a textual analysis of the images designed, but also to build bridges with the literary and cultural tradition in order to evaluate which are the referents that are put into play in each of the thematic groups. Likewise, another of our objectives will be to review whether all these configurations of eroticism persist in other collections of poems by the author or whether, on the contrary, they are exclusive to El príncipe rojo (2005)

Analysis of real experiences of bike sharing schemes of different sizes in Irish cities

    No full text
The first Irish public Bike Sharing Scheme (BSS) was launched in Dublin in 2009. Dublinbikes has been internationally recognised as one of the most successful bike-sharing rental schemes in the world. For this reason, among others, the cities of Cork, Limerick and Galway launched their own BSSs at the end of 2014. The objective of this paper is to compare the performance of the four BSSs during the first two years of implementation in each Irish city according to endogenous factors, such as the physical design of the schemes, and exogenous factors, such as city size and population density. In terms of population, Limerick and Galway are small cities, Cork is a medium-sized city and Dublin is a large city. In consequence, the results cover the main relevant aspects of BSSs according to the size of the scheme, pointing out similarities and differences among BSS of different sizes. The main findings indicate that the number of daily rentals per bike is a good metric from the point of view of the transport operator. However, a higher density of bikes, stations and docking points does not imply greater usage, whereas the size of the deployment area could be a key factor in improving bike usage. Finally, a synopsis of the essential aspects to consider when designing a BSS deployment based on types of users in small cities is provided.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Integral Design & Managemen

    No full text
In this article I propose a reading of El camino rojo a Sabaiba, by Óscar Liera, in light of the aesthetics of the grotesque; that is to say, observing how the author chooses to configure his dramatic text by incorporating images typical of an ancient, ambivalent popular culture that does not think of time in linear terms, that does not recognize borders between life and death, and that advocates a plethoric world, overflowing with sexuality, tragic and comic at the same time. Artistic strategy that, although it distances itself from realism, allows its author to speak of a lacerating social reality, which we can perfectly identify in our latitudes.
