Turning conflict into collaboration in managing commons: A case of Rupa Lake Watershed, Nepal
abstract: A growing body of literature on the commons has provided fascinating and intricate insights on how some local institutions have successfully managed to avoid a seemingly inevitable “tragedy of the commons” once popularized by Garrett Hardin. Primarily benefitting from the recent studies on the commonpool resources conducted by Elinor Ostrom and colleagues, polycentric selforganization and autonomy, rather than the direct state or market control over the commons, are often recognized as key features of the long enduring commons. However, these commons are quite diverse and the outcomes are often multiple and complex, accentuating the needs to differentiate among multiple commons outcomes. Furthermore, relatively under-reported are the cases where the degradation of common-pool resources are actually halted, and even restored. This study examines both the turbulent history of fishery mismanagement in Rupa Lake, Nepal and its reversal built around the participation, engagement and inclusiveness in the governance of its watershed. We find that Rupa Lake’s experience tells two stories. Reflecting Hardin’s dire forecast, the Rupa Lake watershed verged on collapse as population grew and seemingly selfish behavior intensified under an open-access regime. But the users also found a way to rebound and reverse their course as they adopted a bottom-up approach to fishery management and established an innovative community institution, the ‘Rupa Lake Rehabilitation and Fishery Cooperative’, dedicated to the sustainable governance of the commons. This case highlights how one community at the threshold of ‘tragedy’ transformed itself by turning conflict into collaboration, which we hope contributes to the effort of better understanding multiple commons. The final version of this article, as published in International Journal of the Commons, can be viewed online at: https://www.thecommonsjournal.org/articles/10.18352/ijc.561

Plana Memora: Dekontekstualisasi Wujud Karya Seni Rupa
PLANA MEMORA is a visual work created to respond to the shifting phenomena of contemporary aesthetic discourse. Beginning with the idea of \u27celebration\u27 will fade the exclusivity of art leading to a pattern of continuity of creation. The conceptual purpose is the manifestation of the location of the authentic-specific personality spirit of postmodern art creative works; in the simplicity of visualization, philosophical elements can be found that require effort to understand their \u27depth\u27. The practical aim is to offer patterns of unconventional work creation techniques, and their visualization becomes an alternative display of two-dimensi works of art. The form of PLANA MEMORA is like a brief note, made to give a simple and quick warning of daily activities plans. It is handwritten using a ballpen on a piece of paper. The rationale is that postmodern artworks characterize the familiar and intense closeness of the creators\u27 daily lives. This reinforces the author that two-dimensi works of art are no longer (merely) about illustrations, representations of real/dreamy nature, imagination or ending in the composition of color splashes, which ends only show the skill of hand techniques in making it. To support the representation of contemporary artworks, the author designed PLANA MEMORA as a response to the ongoing shift in aesthetic discourse symptoms, as a decontextual manifestation of the form of visual works. This work is not an illustration of events, more accurately called the continuity of symptoms itself. Although it may be similar to documentation, but more work (plan) today and the future.
Enhancing the performance experience: application of design concepts of form, space and choreography in Indian dance theatre
The thesis revisits the key concepts of Indian dance based on the contemporary performance space by introducing design as an integral part of Indian dance, addressing these designs as symbolic or suggestive form (natyadharmi) and not as a realistic form (lokadharmi). In doing so, the thesis aims to explore the possibilities of further integrating design in dance so as to enhance performance experiences. The thesis argues that enhancements are a necessary development in order to express Indian dance in such an integrated way as to allow the “essence” of traditional Indian dance, its spirituality, to be maintained and enhanced.
Expounding on theories of reception, to the extent where the performer is also configured as a receiver, the thesis demonstrates how the form and the formless are conceived by the performer and the receiver. The thesis also investigates how space transformation and choreography affect both the dance and the presentation. The thesis therefore emphasises on design as an important component to investigate how performance experience can be enhanced. It is conceived as a metaphor that develops ideas in dance and how it then creates other possibilities of interactions and communications.
During research, the exploration of design and dance was conducted not only for intellectual inquiry but also to deal with the experience of performances, performers and audiences. To develop a mode of executing Indian dance, the thesis creates a perspective of seeing design and dance as metaphors. The thesis further analyses the concept of symbolic representation in space, time, form and movement, of which the thesis argues, Lord Nataraja as the ideal example of conceptual inspiration.
As a theory of theatricality the thesis argues for the extent to which the value of a performance is enhanced through a shared experience. The experience is enhanced by the multiple design elements integrated within a performance, and directed to induce rasa in both the performer and the audience. Therefore by heightening the performance experience, Indian dance is reflected upon as a spiritual journey enhanced
Governing the Commons: A Case Study of Rupa Lake Rehabilitation and Fishery Cooperative
abstract: This case study explores the institutions and governing strategies involved in the management of Rupa Lake in Kaski district in Western Nepal, particularly Rupa Lake Rehabilitation and Fishery Cooperative. Methods used for data collection include key informant interviews, household interviews, a focus group discussion and archival records. Institutions were examined for their effectiveness in sustaining natural and socioeconomic systems as perceived by community members. Based on a literature review and the results of the data collected, this thesis builds a case study highlighting Rupa Lake Rehabilitation and Fishery Cooperative's strategies for governing its local watershed and formulates a framework for commons institutions that aim to achieve sustainable outcomes. Based on findings, I argue that no single form of governance is a panacea for solving commons problems, governing strategies should be implemented on a case-by-case basis, and institutions should be involved at multiple levels and always include local input. Additionally, a sustainable institution should provide benefits to society that it can see, function democratically and with transparency, promote a biodiverse ecosystem, elevate marginalized groups, and collaborate with other institutions. These "clumsy" institutions create a series of complex interactions that are robust and adaptive to reflect the ever-changing systems they aim to govern
Lingkar Rupa Community Strategy in Developing the Actualization of Street Artists in Kota Tua, Jakarta
This study will describe the method used by the initiators of the Lingkar Rupa Community as a basis for a strategy to develop the quality of the work of street artists in Kota Tua, as well as a description that archives the movement of a new art community in Jakarta. Lingkar Rupa in an effort to protect and actualize themselves and the work of street artists in Kota Tua. The community, which was initiated by an art and culture teacher, Ferry Kurniawan, is a social activity that arose from the founder's personal anxiety about art life at the grassroots level. This research will discuss the background, art activities and exhibitions, art strategies and the impact that Lingkar Rupa has carried out. With a qualitative method, namely using in-depth interview techniques from several founders and members of Lingkar Rupa's own informants. The theory of participatory art will be a surgical tool that examines the direction of this community's journey. It should be noted that the 'street art' that the author describes here is an art that is different from the terminology of 'street art' in the West which often emerges from elite academic circles and tries to present works of protest against the social situation around them in a very 'educated' manner. This research is also important to identify the 'underground' movement which is often not recognized because it is less popular and dapper.
Clinically Relevant Imaging in Tuberous Sclerosis
Tuberous sclerosis (TS), also known as Bourneville disease or Bourneville–Pringle disease, is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder classically characterized by the presence of hamartomatous growths in multiple organs. TS and tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) are different terms for the same genetic condition. Both terms describe clinical changes due to mutations involving either of the two genes named TSC1 and TSC2, which regulate cell growth. The diagnosis of TSC is established using diagnostic criteria based on clinical and imaging findings. Routine screening and surveillance of patients with TSC is needed to determine the presence and extent of organ involvement, especially the brain, kidneys, and lungs, and identify the development of associated complications. As the treatment is organ specific, imaging plays a crucial role in the management of patients with TSC.</jats:p
