    After more than two centuries, this work presents the Russian version of “Dei delitti e delle pene” by Cesare Beccaria, translated by Prince Michail M. Šcerbatov. The edition, conducted on the autographed manuscript, is presented with the original Italian text. In the introductory study, the author traces the fundamental stages of the diffusion of Beccaria’s work in Russia, focusing in particular on the figure of Michail M. Isaev, scholar and translator of the masterpiece by Beccaria, who was the first to re-propose the modern organisation of the “Fifth” edition. The author gives an account of the version proposed by Šcerbatov, investigating its textual genesis and evaluating some aspects of the language used by the translator - first of all the lexicon used for the rendering of philosophical-political and legal terms

    A Holistic Approach for Privacy Protection in E-Government

    Improving e-government services by using data more effectively is a major focus globally. It requires Public Administrations to be transparent, accountable and provide trustworthy services that improve citizen confidence. However, despite all the technological advantages on developing such services and analysing security and privacy concerns, the literature does not provide evidence of frameworks and platforms that enable privacy analysis, from multiple perspectives, and take into account citizens' needs with regards to transparency and usage of citizens information. This paper presents the VisiOn (Visual Privacy Management in User Centric Open Requirements) platform, an outcome of a H2020 European Project. Our objective is to enable Public Administrations to analyse privacy and security from different perspectives, including requirements, threats, trust and law compliance. Finally, our platform-supported approach introduces the concept of Privacy Level Agreement (PLA) which allows Public Administrations to customise their privacy policies based on the privacy preferences of each citizen

    Modelling And Reasoning About TrustRelationships In The Development OfTrustworthy Information Systems

    Trustworthy information systems are information systems that fulfill all the functional and non-functional requirements. To this end, all the components of an information system, either human or technical, need to collaborate in order to meet its requirements and achieve its goals. This entails that system components will show the desired or expected behaviour once the system is put in operation. However, modern information systems include a great number of components that can behave in a very unpredictable way. This unpredictability of the behaviour of the system components is a major challenge to the development of trustworthy information systems and more particularly during the modelling stage. When a system component is modelled as part of a requirements engineering model it creates an uncertainty about its future behaviour, thus undermining the accuracy of the system model and eventually the system trustworthiness. Therefore, the addition of system components inevitably is based on assumptions of their future behaviour. Such assumptions are underlying the development of a system and usually are assumptions of trust by the system developer about her trust relationships with the system components, which are instantly formed when a component is inserted into a requirements engineering model of a system. However, despite the importance of such issues, a requirements engineering methodology that explicitly captures such trust relationships along with the entailing trust assumptions and trustworthiness requirements is still missing. For tackling the preceding problems, the thesis proposes a requirements engineering methodology, namely JTrust (Justifying Trust) for developing trustworthy information systems. The methodology is founded upon the notions of trust and control as the means of confidence achievement. In order to develop an information system the developer needs to consider her trust relationships with the system components that are formed with their addition in a system model, reason about them, and proceed to a justified decision about the design of the system. If the system component cannot be trusted to behave in a desired or expected way then the question of what are the alternatives in order to build confidence in the future behaviour of the system component raises. To answer this question we define a new class of requirements, namely trustworthiness requirements. Trustworthiness requirements prescribe the functionality of the software included in the information system that compels the rest of the information system components to behave in a desired or expected way.The proposed methodology consists of: (i) a modelling language which contains trust and control abstractions; (ii) and a methodological process for capturing and reasoning about trust relationships, modelling and analysing trustworthiness requirements, and assessing the system trustworthiness at a requirements stage. The methodologyis accompanied by a CASE tool to support it.To evaluate our proposal, we have applied our methodology to a case study, and we carried out a survey to get feedback from experts. The topic of the case study was the e-health care system of the National Health Service in England, which was used to reason about trust relationships with system components and identify trustworthiness requirements. Researchers from three academic institutions across Europe and from one industrial company, British Telecom, have participated in the survey in order to provide valuable feedback about the effectiveness and efficiency of the methodology. The results conclude that JTrust is useful and easy to use in modelling and reasoning about trust relationships, modelling and analysing trustworthiness requirements and assessing the system trustworthiness at a requirements level

    Privacy Level Agreements for Public Administration Information Systems

    Improving Public Administration (PA) operations and services is a major focus globally; they should be transparent, accountable and provide services that improve citizens' confidence and trust. In this context, it is important that PAs have the ability to define agreements between citizens and PAs and that such agreements can be used in the context of PAs Information Systems to specify citizens' privacy needs, provide feedback on data sharing and enable PA departments to analyse privacy threats and vulnerabilities, compliance with laws and regulations and analyse trust relationships.     Fish Scales Produce Cortisol upon Stimulation with ACTH

    Cortisol concentration in fish scales is a novel and reliable indicator of chronic stress. However, until now cortisol in scales has been considered to be accumulated through the circulation and it has not yet been studied whether it can be de novo produced from cells found in the scales. In the current study, scales of European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, were stimulated in-vitro with a range of concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) to investigate if they can produce and release cortisol. Moreover, scales were exposed to a combination of ACTH and metyrapone, an inhibitor of cortisol production, to examine whether cortisol was actually produced in the scales. Results from ACTH administration showed that scales increased their cortisol release in a dose-dependent manner. This effect was reversed when scales were co-incubated with ACTH and metyrapone, indicating that cortisol was produced de novo and not released only upon stimulation with ACTH

    The Ionian Islands, a complex of seven islands off the west coast of the Greek peninsula, historically and culturally constitute a contact zone between the Greek-speaking world and the West. In the 19th century, the islands, a former Venetian colony, experienced French and British colonial power before their incorporation in 1864 to the Greek state. This study focuses on the process of transformation of hybrid, cosmopolitan pre-national cultural identities into national schemes of appropriation and affiliation. Here, cultural agents, networking across linguistic, cultural, confessional or other borders, are exemplified by the example of the Lountzis brothers and their special link to the German-speaking world, its philosophy and its poetics. In this study, translation is scrutinised as a field of identity negotiation. It is also understood as a gesture of kinship with larger literary communities in the wider spectrum of the mobility of knowledge and ideas enabled by 19th century mystical sectarianism. The author of this book traces local micro-cosmopolitanism in the form of readership and identity performance, while cosmopolitanism, nationalism and sectarianism are viewed as interacting factors in the transformation of cultural, social and national identities in 19th century Europe.     Regulation of divergent cortisol responsiveness in European sea bass, <i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i> L.

    Mechanisms regulating differences in cortisol responsiveness between low (LR) and high response (HR) individuals have been poorly studied. In this context, we aimed to study key regulatory processes in cortisol dynamics at the head kidneys of LR and HR European sea bass. To do so, resting plasma cortisol and ACTH concentrations were quantified in these fish. Additionally, the head kidneys of these individuals were superfused through an in vitro superfusion system and stimulated with the same amount of ACTH to assess their cortisol biosynthetic capacity. Moreover, the expression of important genes in cortisol regulation was assessed. Results showed that LR fish had lower resting cortisol concentrations than HR, although no differences existed in the circulating levels of ACTH. Additionally, the biosynthetic capacity of HR was higher than that of LR fish when in vitro stimulated with ACTH. At the molecular level, a statistically significant 3.4-fold higher expression of the ACTH receptor, mc2r, and a 2.3-fold, though not significant, higher expression of 11β-hydroxylase (cyp11b1), an enzyme involved in cortisol biosynthesis, was observed in the HR fish. Finally, a statistically significant 1.3-fold lower expression of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 (hsd11b2), an enzyme involved in cortisol inactivation, was observed in HR when compared to LR fish. Therefore, it was for the first time indicated that cortisol dynamics can also be regulated at the post-production level in the head kidney. Collectively, our results highlight the crucial role of the interrenal tissue in the regulation of differences in cortisol response between LR and HR sea bass individuals.</div
