Voci di mare e caffè. Poesia dominicana attuale e transmedialità

    No full text

A Discrete-Event Simulation Model to Configure Operating Rooms for Robotic Cardiac Surgery

    No full text
Background. Robotic cardiac surgery (RCS) has emerged as a promising alternative in clinical practice to overcome the limitations of minimally invasive techniques. However, the integration of RCS with surgical process management is key in taking full advantage of its benefits. Aim. We assess the performance of RCS interventions as a function of operating room (OR) layout, using a discrete-event simulation (DES) tool, which allows the simulation of different RCS procedures in different layouts. Methods. A DES model was developed for 2 types of RCS, atrial fibrillation ablation and mitral valve repair, to analyze them in the presence of different OR layouts. Data on the activities and timings of all operators in the OR, used to feed the DES, were collected on site at Humanitas Gavazzeni Hospital, Bergamo, Italy, through direct recording during RCS procedures. Results. The advantages and disadvantages of different OR layouts were highlighted and quantified through a series of key performance indicators and qualitative outcomes, including the overall duration of the entire surgical process, the distance covered by the surgical team, and their utilization. Specifically, the characteristics of a new, larger OR in the considered hospital were assessed prior to the actual transfer of the RCS department in the new OR. Conclusion. This work provided valuable insights and recommendations to RCS operators, which were put in practice, specifically tailoring OR configurations to RCS procedural characteristics

Strengthening healthcare supply chains: a social–ecological perspective on resilience

Purpose This paper aims to contextualise the resilience of the healthcare supply chain (HSC) from a social–ecological (S–E) perspective, with the dual aim of investigating S–E resilience principles reflected in HSC resilience literature and identifying actions and barriers that affect HSC's capabilities to persist, adapt and transform in response to disturbances. In doing so, the study addresses the fragmentation in current conceptualisations of HSC resilience. Design/methodology/approach A contextualised literature review systematically analysing a corpus of 89 peer-reviewed articles, guided by a S–E resilience framework, was employed to identify key actions, barriers and applied resilience principles in the HSC context. Findings Key S–E resilience elements, such as collaboration, flexibility and agility, are already present in the HSC resilience literature. Actions enhancing HSC resilience were identified and categorised by implementation phase and enabled S–E resilience capability. Most resilience actions align with persistence and adaptation; only a few cases of transformative resilience are documented. The identification of contextual factors, such as regulatory rigidity, resource constraints and fragmentation, hindering adaptation and transformation, as well as progress towards a desirable post-disturbance state, is another key finding of this study. Social implications Enhancing these capabilities improves the system's ability to withstand and recover from disturbances, ensuring continuous access to healthcare services, and allows the HSC to transform, exploiting disturbances as opportunities to evolve to a new, better post-disturbance state. Such transformation can lead to more equitable healthcare delivery, reduce vulnerabilities and improve long-term outcomes. Originality/value This study examines HSC resilience through the lens of S–E resilience, which emphasises transformation to a stronger state after disturbances rather than merely restoring stability, overcoming the engineering resilience conceptualisation

    No full text

Parametric LCA for optimizing rotational moulding of compositeproducts to support eco-design

    No full text
Rotational moulding (RM) is a versatile technique for producing plastic products, but it environmental sustainability needs deeper analysis. Existing life cycle assessment (LCA) studies are often limited, focusing on single materials and ignoring variations in process parameters. This study introduces a parametric LCA model designed to minimize the environmental impact of RM composite products by optimizing material composition, specifically blends of polyethylene and natural fibre (e.g., abaca). The model allows users to set control parameters, including product dimensions, mould material and thickness, energy consumption, from gas furnace and motor, number of moulds, geographical location, and the impact category to assess. Applied to case studies with abaca fibre composites, the model demonstrated that optimizing the fibre-to-polymer ratio can significantly reduce environmental impacts. These reductions vary depending on the input parameters, confirming that a one-size-fits-all approach is inadequate. The model’s ability to process multiple heterogeneous factors makes it a robust tool for eco-assessment. It supports systematic sensitivity analysis and offers practical, flexible guidance for eco-design in RM, particularly for multi-material products. Its strengths, flexibility, low cost, and ease of integration make it especially valuable for small and medium-sized enterprises with diverse product lines, enabling more sustainable decision-making without requiring extensive resources

We demonstrate enhanced four-wave mixing (FWM) in doped silica waveguides integrated with graphene oxide (GO) layers. Owing to strong mode overlap between the integrated waveguides and GO films that have a high Kerr nonlinearity and low loss, the FWM efficiency of the hybrid integrated waveguides is significantly improved. We perform FWM measurements for different pump powers, wavelength detuning, GO coating lengths, and number of GO layers. Our experimental results show good agreement with theory, achieving up to ~9.5-dB enhancement in the FWM conversion efficiency for a 1.5-cm-long waveguide integrated with 2 layers of GO. We show theoretically that for different waveguide geometries an enhancement in FWM efficiency of ~ 20 dB can be obtained in the doped silica waveguides, and more than 30 dB in silicon nanowires and slot waveguides. This demonstrates the effectiveness of introducing GO films into integrated photonic devices in order to enhance the performance of nonlinear optical processes
