A politics of conversion: nihilism and love in Toni Morrison's fiction

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras.O estudo Uma Política de Conversão: Niilismo e Amor na Ficção de Toni Morrison começa com a idéia de que a Literatura Afro-Americana apresenta um sentido de auto-reflexividade e hibridismo, através do qual autobiografia dialoga com romance, o espiritual se funde com o político. A partir deste traço dialógico a auto-reflexividade é politicamente estabelecida entre niilismo e amor. Na política de conversão, o estudo analisa as formas como mulheres negras, individualmente ou em grupo, fogem da escravidão para a liberdade, avançam da individualidade para a coletividade, ou substituem niilismo por amor. Metodologicamente o estudo apresenta sete capítulos. O primeiro discute os aspectos dialógicos que ilustram as conexões entre narrativas espirituais, de escravos e ficção, entre espiritualidade e política. O segundo examina o diálogo entre a conversão, pregação pública e formação da comunidade em Diário e Experiências Religiosas de Lee. O capítulo sugere que ao afirmar espiritualidade e humanidade a narradora abre profundo espaço para a mulher negra reclamar direitos civis. O terceiro discute o diálogo no interior da política de conversão entre narrativa de escravos e ficção. Este diálogo lida com niilismo e amor em Incidentes de Jacobs e Amada, Sula e O Olho Mais Azul de Morrison. Para a análise de niilismo e amor valores individuais e coletivos são considerados em relação a cinco aspectos: ambiente e agente antagonistas, agente de apoio, propósito da personagem e resultado alcançado. É visível, no estudo, o apoio que certas mulheres recebem de suas comunidades para contra-atacar antagonistas. O apoio nem sempre resulta na superação do niilismo e, por isso, derrota temporária pode ocorrer antes que elas sejam reintegradas à comunidade, como acontece com Linda Brent. O quarto capítulo examina as fraquezas e as energias da política da conversão e a reintegração de Sethe Suggs à comunidade de Bluestone Road. O quinto avalia como a comunidade de Bottom tenta controlar a individualidade de Sula Peace e como um grupo de mulheres lideradas por Nel Wrights consegue resgatar o espírito de independência da heroína. O sexto mostra como a política da conversão das mulheres de Lorain é incapaz de garantir a saúde mental de Pecola Breedlove, mas consegue criar um papel mais consistente para o grupo. No sétimo, a conclusão examina da relação dialética entre niilismo e amor ou auto-amor nas experiências dos indivíduos e dos grupos. O estudo sugere que em Incidentes a busca de Linda Brent por liberdade envolve elementos de autodestruição e de autoempoderamento. Da mesma maneira, o estudo conclui que em Amada o amor que Sethe Suggs tem para as suas crianças mata a própria filha, enfatizando, assim, o desejo de livrá-la da escravidão. Igualmente em Sula, a individualidade de Sula Peace não apenas limita, mas também expande as experiências do grupo, levando-o à emancipação. Finalmente, em O Olho Mais Azul a luta de Pecola Breedlove por amor e beleza reflete auto-ódio ao mesmo tempo em que reconstrói a auto-apreciação de toda a comunidade

Este artículo surge a partir de algunas reflexiones acerca del efecto comunicador del estilo narrativo de Toni Morrison, novelista Afro-Americana, y Premio Nobel de Literatura 1993. El análisis se centra en los alcances de la influencia de la música y de la pintura como aspectos relevantes de la estructura narrativa. A través de descripciones coloridas y de ritmos musicales, Morrison logra poner de manifiesto rasgos particulares de la cultura Afro-Americana, a la vez que transmite al lector emociones y sentimientos vividos de un pueblo afectado por la larga historia de discriminación social
Gatekeepers of Knowledge within Industrial Districts: Who They Are, How They Interact

Studies on industrial districts suggest that their innovative performance is strictly linked to their ability to absorb external knowledge. Yet, the existing literature provides few insights into the functioning of this process. This paper, focusing on leader firms located in a successful Italian furniture district, investigates whether they feed the district with knowledge absorbed from external sources, thereby behaving as 'gatekeepers of knowledge'. Findings show that leader firms are well connected with knowledge sources; yet, linkages with districts firms are far more limited as are informal exchanges that, when they do occur, are mostly restricted to generic information. Cet article, axe sur des societes leaders situees dans une region d'Italie ou l'industrie de l'ameublement est prospere, examine si ces societes alimentent la region en savoir assimile aupres de sources exterieures, se comportant ce faisant en gardiens du savoir. Les resultats montrent que ces societes leaders sont bien connectees aux sources de savoir; neanmoins, les liens avec les entreprises de la region sont beaucoup plus limites que ne le sont les echanges informels qui, lorsqu'ils interviennent effectivement, se limitent pour l'essentiel a des informations generiques. Aus den neuesten Studien uber Industriebezirke geht hervor, dass die innovative Leistung dieser Bezirke stark von ihrer Fahigkeit abhangt, externes Wissen zu absorbieren. Die Funktionsweise dieses Prozesses wurde in der Literatur hingegen bisher nur selten untersucht. In diesem Beitrag konzentrieren wir uns auf fuhrende Firmen in einem erfolgreichen italienischen Mobelindustriebezirk und untersuchen, ob diese Firmen den Bezirk mit Wissen aus externen Quellen anreichern und somit als Wissensregulatoren auftreten. Die Ergebnisse lassen darauf schliessen, dass fuhrende Firmen gut mit Wissensquellen verknupft sind. Die Verknupfungen zu den Firmen des Bezirks sind jedoch weitaus starker eingeschrankt; dasselbe gilt fur den informellen Austausch, der - wenn er uberhaupt auftritt - sich meist auf generelle Informationen beschrankt. En recientes estudios se ha observado que el rendimiento innovador de las comarcas industriales esta estrictamente vinculado a su capacidad de absorber conocimiento externo. Sin embargo, la literatura presente ofrece pocas perspectivas en cuanto al funcionamiento de este proceso. En este ensayo me centro en empresas lideres ubicadas en una comarca italiana conocida por su exitosa industria del mueble e investigo si estas empresas proporcionan a la comarca conocimientos absorbidos de fuentes externas y si entonces se comportan como guardianes del conocimiento. Los resultados indican que si bien las empresas lideres estan bien conectadas con fuentes de conocimiento, los enlaces con empresas de la comarca estan mucho mas limitados que los intercambios informales que, aunque ocurren, estan principalmente restringidos a informacion generica. Más allá de la literatura: el legado musical y visual de Toni Morrison para las artistas negras
The aim of this article is to analyze Toni Morrison’s understudied influence on music and visual art. In 1994 she established the Atelier Program in Princeton University as an interdisciplinary arts program that supported and nurtured multifaceted collaborations between artists and students from different disciplines. Moreover, her oeuvre shows her craft in a number of literary and artistic spheres that include writing novels, short stories, children’s books, literary criticism, song cycles and the script for a musical and a play. Keeping in mind Morrison’s multidimensional engagement with literature and the other arts, the first half of the article delves into the contemporary musical responses to the writer, placing special emphasis on black women musicians such as rapper Akua Naru, neo-soul vocalist India Arie, and singer and songwriter Janelle Monáe. Morrison’s intersectional representations of gender and race relations across the history of the U.S. have similarly inspired visual artists. The second half of the article explores the visual creations by U.S. black women artists Kara Walker, Lorna Simpson and Amy Sherald. Morrison’s manifold articulations of blackness and womanhood similarly resonate on the other side of the Atlantic through the work of Lubaina Himid, the first black British artist to win the prestigious Turner Prize in 2017.El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la influencia de Toni Morrison en la música y las artes visuales, hasta ahora poco estudiada. En 1994, Morrison fundó el Atelier en la Universidad de Princeton, un programa interdisciplinar para apoyar las artes y fomentar colaboraciones entre artistas y estudiantes de distintas disciplinas. Asimismo, Morrison demostró su maestría en géneros literarios y artísticos muy diversos que incluyen la autoría de novelas, relatos, libros infantiles, crítica literaria, canciones, además de los guiones de un musical y una obra de teatro. Teniendo en cuenta esta relación interdisciplinar de la propia autora con su obra, la primera parte del artículo explora las respuestas musicales a la producción artística de Morrison, con especial énfasis en las mujeres negras; ejemplos de ello son la rapera Akua Naru, la cantante de neo-soul India Arie y la vocalista y compositora Janelle Monáe. La manera en que Morrison representa en su obra la complejidad de las relaciones interseccionales entre el género, la raza y la clase social a lo largo de la historia de Estados Unidos también ha inspirado a artistas visuales. En este sentido, la segunda parte del artículo analiza las creaciones de las artistas afroestadounidenses Kara Walker, Lorna Simpson y Amy Sherald. Ellen Adel Morrison
Ellen Adel Morrison, 84, passed away peacefully on August 5. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Keith Morrison, who passed away only six weeks before her. The oldest of six children, Ellen was born in Gary, Indiana on November 18, 1930. Her parents, Mary and Otto Reising, were schoolteachers during the depression. Her father, using the pen name of Paul Strahl, also wrote for Esquire magazine and wrote a novel, zThe Quarrel,y which was widely reviewed and praised. Ellen's parents instilled in her a lifelong love of all things literary. Ellen left Gary to attend Purdue University, where she received a bachelor's degree in home economics in 1952. Two weeks after graduation, she married her beloved Keith, whom she had met at Purdue. Ellen then worked in Chicago as an editor for the famed Culinary Arts Institute where she combined her talent as a superb cook with her love of books, testing recipes and editing cookbooks. In 1954, Ellen and Keith started a family and moved to San Francisco. Over the next 14 years, as Keith advanced in his career, the family moved from California to Michigan to Ohio and then to Texas. Each of their four children was born in a different state. While dedicated to raising their children, Ellen remained involved in other pursuits. Among other things, she taught impoverished families how to eat nutritiously on a budget she worked as a substitute teacher and she wrote a food column for an Ohio newspaper, this time testing recipes on her family. The family returned to California in 1968 and moved to Los Altos in 1974, where they resided ever since. From 1977 until she retired in 2001, Ellen was a teacher at the First Congregational Church Nursery School in Palo Alto. She was affectionately known as zTeacher Elleny and touched the lives of many four-year olds. For many of the children, she was their anchor. Teachers started assigning the novels of Toni Morrison long before she won the 1993 Nobel Prize in literature and before there was a significant body of secondary literature on the author. Now her works are the subject of countless studies and listed in the syllabi of an ever-increasing number of courses in schools and universities. Reflecting on the role of emotions in the PhD process
This research project examined the role of emotions in the PhD process through an exploratory, qualitative, self reflective study by six recent or current PhD candidates. Despite differences in the nature of the PhD fields of study, and in the personal backgrounds of the participants, a number of common themes were recognised. We developed an interactive workshop for postgraduate students in which participants were asked to reflect on their emotional experiences in their own studies. The combined information from these sources was used to suggest some strategies for management of negative emotions that may arise during the PhD process. Of critical importance is the multiple roles of the PhD supervisor in helping manage the negative emotions that most PhD students inevitably experience at some stage in their candidature. Most important, though, is the role of self reflection in identifying potential emotional problems and their solutions; a process we recommend to PhD candidates and supervisors
