FINANCIAMIENTO Y TAMAÑO DE LAS UNIVERSIDADES PÚBLICAS ARGENTINAS: UN ANÁLISIS DE CLUSTERING HARD Y DIFUSO

    No full text

A track finding algorithm based on pixel detector for the ATLAS second level trigger

    No full text
A fast track reconstruction algorithm for the ATLAS second level trigger is presented. The timing performance (3.5 ms for a jet reconstruction at low luminosity) is satisfactory; the transverse impact parameter resolution (75 mu m) is sufficient to perform an on- line b-tagging, and the full three-dimensional reconstruction produces good seeds for more sophisticated track searches. Il lavoro straniero nelle Marche dal 1871 al 2011

    No full text

Demographic and socioeconomic effects of environmental policies: the 1927 special goat tax and mountain depopulation in Italy

    No full text
The research aims to assess the demographic impact related with the implementation of an environmental policy, which affects food availability in economically and environmentally fragile settings, dependent on few, unstable resources. The paper addresses this topic from a particular perspective, namely the special goat tax issued in Italy in 1927. I focus on the goat breeding because of its ecological footprint and the key role on population’s livelihood in marginal lands. Methodologically, the paper combines quantitative and qualitative sources. The analysis of demographic dynamics in a broad set of Italian mountain municipalities over the period 1911–1971 is matched with a qualitative part, based on a careful reading of the coeval survey on mountain depopulation. Findings of the analysis highlight that the goat tax undermined food security promoted outmigration and shrinkage in municipalities that were more dependent on goat breeding only. In addition, the 1927 law generated power struggles between landowner and local communities and between collective and private properties. Such results show that socially-blind, top-down environmental policies could exacerbate inequalities, food insecurity and power conflicts that threaten the effective implementation of the law. An ecological transition must be combined with social inclusion, constant care to the governance and power relations in order to extend public support and make regulations more effective

Profiling deaf and hard-of-hearing users of subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing in Italy: a questionnaire-based study

    No full text
The aim of this article is to present the results of a questionnaire-based study carried out as part of the author’s Master’s Degree dissertation about Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing (SDH). In particular, the need to gather specific information regarding audience design will be highlighted in the paper, since this research field has long been neglected in Italy. The questions were aimed at shedding light on the needs, cultural environment and world-view of Italian SDH users, by eliciting personal data as well as subtitlerelated information. Moreover, the 232 respondents were asked to suggest improvements to SDH services in Italy. Although these first results cannot allow definite conclusions because of the limited number of respondents to the survey, they might prove to be helpful for professional translators and subtitlers to better know their intended recipients.

Mathematical model of glucagon kinetics during an oral glucose tolerance test based on a dual regulation mechanism

    No full text
Glucagon is a hormone secreted by the pancreatic alpha cells and plays a key role in glucose homeostasis and in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Different mechanisms are involved in its regulation, but exact mechanisms are still largely unknown. This study aimed to propose a model describing glucagon inhibition during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), accounting for a double regulation mechanism. The model has been developed starting from a model previously proposed by our group that includes two differential equations, one for plasma glucagon and one for C-peptide (marker of insulin at pancreatic level). In the new model, in addition to plasma C-peptide, plasma glucose is included as model input. The model provides two parameters of possible clinical relevance, namely SGLUCA and kG (alpha-cell insulin and glucose sensitivity, respectively) and has been validated on mean literature data of healthy subjects and subjects affected by T2D (CNT and T2D, respectively). Model analysis yielded SGLUCA estimates ranging from -0.1515 to 0.7629 and from -5.5602 to 1.1067 (ng of glucagon·nmol of C-peptide-1) in CNT and T2D groups, respectively; according to the 95% confidence intervals (CIs), SGLUCA was significantly different from zero in 4 and in 0 out of 8 time points, in CNT and T2D. Estimates for kG were equal to 2.8302 (95% CIs: 1.1973-4.4632) and 0.9913 (95% CIs: -0.5559-2.5386) ng of glucagon·mmol of glucose-1. Thus, results suggest both insulin (represented by C-peptide) and glucose significantly contributes to glucagon inhibition in healthy subjects, but not in T2D. In conclusion, the proposed model may help to describe different mechanisms acting on glucagon inhibition in the single individuals

Moving, remaining, and returning: international mobility of doctorate holders in the social sciences and humanities

    No full text
International mobility of doctorate holders is one important dimension of the general phenomenon of internationalization and globalization of research systems, which is supposed to have positive effects on economy and society. Although issues of international mobility for doctorate holders have been largely investigated, there is still relatively little information about the factors affecting those with degrees specifically in the social sciences and humanities (SSH). Considering this, the aim of the current paper is twofold: first, to investigate whether the propensity of a doctorate holder in SSH to experience a period of international mobility during the career is influenced by mobility during the educational stage; second, to examine whether the mobility after doctoral degree affects the choice of doctorates to return to their country of origin, as opposed to remaining abroad, controlling for peculiar aspects of the higher education sector of employment. The results show that international mobility during graduate education and at the moment of choosing the first job on attaining the PhD are important factors influencing the future mobility of doctorate holders in the SSH areas. These same factors also influence the individual’s propensity to diverge (continue abroad) or converge (remain, return) with respect to their initial country of employment. The results of this investigation improve our knowledge about the effects generated by the early choices of individuals, which could support decision-makers in designing instruments addressing the international mobility of doctorate holders and, when relevant, creating the conditions for their return
