After more than two centuries, this work presents the Russian version of “Dei delitti e delle pene” by Cesare Beccaria, translated by Prince Michail M. Šcerbatov. The edition, conducted on the autographed manuscript, is presented with the original Italian text. In the introductory study, the author traces the fundamental stages of the diffusion of Beccaria’s work in Russia, focusing in particular on the figure of Michail M. Isaev, scholar and translator of the masterpiece by Beccaria, who was the first to re-propose the modern organisation of the “Fifth” edition. The author gives an account of the version proposed by Šcerbatov, investigating its textual genesis and evaluating some aspects of the language used by the translator - first of all the lexicon used for the rendering of philosophical-political and legal terms

Detecting Prominent Patterns of Activity in Social Media

A large part of the Web, today, consists of online platforms that allow their users to generate digital content. They include online social networks, multimedia-sharing websites, blogging platforms, and online discussion boards, to name a few examples. Users of those platforms generate content in the form of digital items (e.g. documents, images, or videos), inspect content generated by others, and, finally, interact with each other (e.g. by commenting on each other's generated items). For the social process of information exchange they enable, such platforms are customarily referred to as `social media'. Activity on social media is largely spontaneous and uncoordinated, but it is not random; users choose the discussions they engage in and who they interact with, and their choices and actions reflect what they find important. In this thesis, we define and quantify notions of importance for items, users, and social connections between users, and, based on those definitions, propose efficient algorithms to detect important instances of social media activity. Our description of the algorithms is accompanied with experimental studies that showcase their performance on real datasets in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.Ph

Purpose of research The purpose of the research is to determine whether in patients with chronic heart failure there is a correlation between the repetitions of the 1MSTS with ergospirometry parameters, as well as with the strength of the quadriceps muscles (measured with the 1RM test and strength endurance at 65% of 1RM) . It also examines whether the repetitions of 1MSTS are more when performed with a warm-up compared to when performed without a warm-up. Results No significant correlation was found between warm-up 1MSTS repetitions and ergospirometry parameters, except for the VO2 ml/min/kg parameter (p=0.07), which showed a correlation trend with r^2= 0.41. There was no correlation between warm-up 1MSTS repetitions with VE L/min p=0.237, RQ p=0.507, BR p=0.717 and VO2 ml/min p=0.367. There was also no correlation between 1MSTS warm-up repetitions and quadriceps 1RM (p=0.192) as well as repetitions at 65% of quadriceps 1RM (p=0.607). No difference was found in repetitions of the 1MSTS with and without warm-up, but most participants reported quadriceps muscle soreness without the warm-up. Conclusions In conclusion, the present study showed that in patients with chronic heart failure, the 1MSTS test does not show a statistically significant correlation with the ergospirometric indices VE, BR, RQ and VO2 (ml/min). However, a trend of correlation with VO2 index (ml/min/kg) was observed. Furthermore, no significant correlation was detected between the 1MSTS test and the applied strength tests but no statistically significant difference in 1MSTS repetitions with and without warm-up in these patients

Hybridity, Identity and Micro-cosmopolitanism in the Ionian 19th century

    No full text
The Ionian Islands, a complex of seven islands off the west coast of the Greek peninsula, historically and culturally constitute a contact zone between the Greek-speaking world and the West. In the 19th century, the islands, a former Venetian colony, experienced French and British colonial power before their incorporation in 1864 to the Greek state. This study focuses on the process of transformation of hybrid, cosmopolitan pre-national cultural identities into national schemes of appropriation and affiliation. Here, cultural agents, networking across linguistic, cultural, confessional or other borders, are exemplified by the example of the Lountzis brothers and their special link to the German-speaking world, its philosophy and its poetics. In this study, translation is scrutinised as a field of identity negotiation. It is also understood as a gesture of kinship with larger literary communities in the wider spectrum of the mobility of knowledge and ideas enabled by 19th century mystical sectarianism. The author of this book traces local micro-cosmopolitanism in the form of readership and identity performance, while cosmopolitanism, nationalism and sectarianism are viewed as interacting factors in the transformation of cultural, social and national identities in 19th century Europe. Continuum enhancements, line profiles and magnetic field evolution during consecutive flares

    No full text
During solar flares, magnetic energy can be converted into electromagnetic radiation from radio waves to γ rays. Enhancements in the continuum at visible wavelengths give rise to white-light flares, as well as continuum enhancements in the FUV and NUV passbands. In addition, the strong energy release in these events can lead to the rearrangement of the magnetic field at the photospheric level, causing morphological changes in large and stable magnetic structures like sunspots. In this context, we describe observations acquired by satellite instruments (IRIS, SDO/HMI, Hinode/SOT) and ground- based telescopes (ROSA/DST) during two consecutive C7.0 and X1.6 flares occurred in active region NOAA 12205 on 2014 November 7. The flare was accompanied by an eruption. The results of the analysis show the presence of continuum enhancements during the evolution of the events, observed both in ROSA images and in IRIS spectra. In the latter, a prominent blue-shifted component is observed at the onset of the eruption. We investigate the role played by the evolution of the δ sunspots of the active region in the flare triggering, and finally we discuss the changes in the penumbrae surrounding these sunspots as a further consequence of these flares
