    Ethical theory of Al-Ghazali

    In this article, the author examines the role of moral philosophy and its significance within the philosophical-theological thought of Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ghazali (Arabic: الغزالي محمد بن محمد حامد أبو). Al-Ghazali is regarded as one of the most important figures in the Muslim intellectual tradition, leaving behind a rich body of work. The author demonstrates how ethics plays a central role in Al-Ghazali's philosophy, which evolves into a synthesis of philosophical-theological thought and, in his later years, mystically oriented thinking. Through works such as Ihya Ulum al-Din, Tahafut al-Falasifa, and Al-Munqidh min al-Dalal, Al-Ghazali integrates Sufism with Sharia law, critiques Peripatetic philosophy, and describes his spiritual journey. Al-Ghazali's interpretation of moral issues will have a significant influence on the development of later philosophical-theological thought in Islam, laying the groundwork for the harmonization of Sufism with orthodox Islam and influencing Muslim and European intellectual currents

    Abstract: Dakwah communication of Imam al-Ghazali in his book Ihya Ulumuddin explains about the understanding of dakwah briefly and clearly. The book stresses to internalization process, diffusion, institutionalization and transformation of Islamic teaching that involves some aspects for realizing good life, safety and light in the world and in the world after here. In describing this subject, namely the preaching paradigm of Imam al-Ghazali, the author will share it in several subtopics. As one of the scholars who have long been devoted to the missionary arena. Moving on from the analysis of the study of the book Iḥyā` \u27Ulūmiddīn, the author will share the discussion in this chapter as follows: Al-Ghazali\u27s idea of Da\u27wah and its Concepts.     Abstract: Muhammad al-Ghazali is a controversial figure. Some give a positive appreciation to the method of hadith understanding he offered and regarded as a solutive method at the present day. But, other accused him as inkar al-sunnah and regarded his method was inapplicable. According to the author, some ideas of the reconstruction on the method of hadith understanding of Muhammad al-Ghazali still use a positivist paradigm that focuses on objectivity, while there are no objects without a subject. Therefore, in this paper, the author emphasizes the discussion on two points; first, criticizing the application of the method of hadith understanding of Muhammad al-Ghazali; and second, offering the new method of reconstruction using descriptive analysis and explanation method. The author examines the book of Muhammad al-Ghazali and other books that are the result of criticism of the researchers about him. The result, studying and understanding the hadiths requires a set of batiniyah in the form of consciousness and sincere intention, studying the authenticity of the hadith, structural and pragmatic analysis, and the reviewer must verify the results of intellectual activity comprehensively. Abstrak: Muhammad al-Ghazali merupakan tokoh kontroversial. Ada yang mem­berikan apresiasi positif atas metode pemahaman hadis yang ditawar­kan­nya yang dianggap solutif pada saat sekarang. Namun ada juga yang me­nuduh­nya sebagai inkar al-sunnah dan menilai metode yang ditawarkannya belum aplikatif. Menurut penulis, beberapa tawaran rekonstruksi terhadap metode pemahaman hadis Muhammad al-Ghazali masih menggunakan para­digma positivisme yang menitikberatkan pada objektivitas, padahal tidak ada objek tanpa subjek. Dalam tulisan ini, penulis menekankan dua pembahasan, yakni: mengkritik aplikasi metode pemahaman hadis Muhammad al-Ghazali; dan menawarkan bentuk rekonstruksi metode yang baru dengan menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif dan penjelasan. Penulis mengkaji buku karya Muhammad al-Ghazali dan buku-buku lain yang merupakan hasil kritikan para peneliti terhadapnya. Hasilnya, di dalam mengkaji dan memahami hadis di­perlukan seperangkat batiniyah berupa kesadaran dan niat yang ikhlas, meng­kaji otentisitas hadis, analisis struktural dan pragmatik, dan pengkaji melakukan verifikasi terhadap hasil aktifitas intelektual (pemahaman) secara komprehensif

    This paper of the discussion focuses on the concept of economic thought of al-Ghazali. The main reason for choosing al-Ghazali's economic concept is since it coins its own peculiarities compared to that of other thinkers. In his grand concept of economy, al-Ghazali focused on the behavior of individual within the perspective of al-Qur'an, al-Sunnah, fatwa of prophet Muhammad’s companions, and the attendants of his companions as well as the leading sufis such as  Junayd al-Baghdady, Zun al-Mishri, and Harith bin Asad al-Muhasibi. This paper also discusses about how is exactly the economic concept of al-Ghazali? Writer of this paper concludes that al-Ghazali’s thought in the economic field is inclined to moral ethics. Al-Ghazali based his economic concept on that of sufis since at the time the riches and the official governments were full of prestige to accept the fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and philosophical approach. Muslim economists have more contributions to economic development not only in Islamic environment, but also conventional economy. The author of this paper, with the discussion of the economic thought of the Muslim thinkers, hopes that the discourse of Islamic economy in academic circles becomes more lively. Furthermore, the nuances of Islamic economy in Indonesia can grow and operate the Islamic financial institutions in Indonesia increasingly and comprehensively

    This paper addresses a theme that is still being discussed to this day.  That is about the authority of Imam al-Ghazali in the science of Hadith. There are debates among al-Ghazali's scholars and reviewers. There are five factors that are the background for the presence of criticism of the Hujjatul Islam. Through this paper the author seeks to position the problem fairly. The author uses qualitative methods with historical analysis, content analysis and comparative analysis. The results of the author's study have several conclusions. First, criticism of al-Ghazali has been going on for a long time, not new today. Second, Some of the criticisms made against al-Ghazali are true. Third, Some of the criticisms are not entirely correct and need to be addressed fairly based on existing data. Fourth, based on this study the author states that al-Ghazali is a scholar who has authority in the science of hadith Dirâyah and Ma'âni al-Hadîts, although it is not known as Muhaddits in Riwâyah among scholars. At least in terms of Dirâyah and understanding of hadith, al-Ghazali is still more authoritative than the scholars of his time, as well as compared to the scholars or hadith reviewers of this era

The author concludes that al-Ghazali’s qur’anic hermeneutical concept has similarities with the theory of philosophical hermeneutics initiated by Gadamer in practice. It can be understood from the various interpretations expressed in the book Nahwa Maud}ū’i Tafsir al-Qur’an li Suwar al-Karīm. But even so, one thing that is emphasized by Muhammad al-Ghazali in his interpretation of the Qur’an that the Quran is a unified whole that must be understood in the context of a whole

    Influence of fatty acid methyl ester composition on tribological properties of vegetable oils and duck fat derived biodiesel

    To explore its potential as a biolubricant/additive, the study determines the frictional properties at various lubrication regimes for biodiesels derived from vegetable oils, hydrogenated vegetable oil and animal fat. It is found that the frictional characteristics for the biodiesels can be divided into Group I (feedstocks from winter crops) and Group II (feedstocks from summer crops, animal fat and hydrogenated vegetable oil). For each of the groups, with decreasing ratio of mono-unsaturated to total saturated fatty acid methyl ester content, the biodiesels’ friction force reduces while their load carrying capacity deteriorates. From the experimental results, it is deduced that soybean biodiesel shows great potential as a biolubricant/additive because it possesses low friction force with the highest possible load carrying capacity

    In this study, the author explains how the relationship between science and religion from a fiqh expert, philosopher, and Sufi, namely Imam Al-Ghazali, is of course very important to study. The urgency or purpose of this discussion is to study the division of knowledge according to Al-Ghazali and see the spiritual development of an Imam Al-Ghazali. This paper is expected to make it easier for readers related to science and religion according to Imam Al-Ghazali and a bridge to understand the relationship between science, knowledge and religion according to Imam Al-Ghazali. The research used in this study is a literature study (liberary research) with a descriptive qualitative approach. The result of this discussion is that al-Ghazali's spiritual development is divided into three, namely before uzlah, during uzlah, and after uzlah. In his thinking al-Ghazali did not distinguish between knowledge and knowledge, both are the same. Therefore, al-Ghazali's concept is personal that the relationship between creator and creature is never united, only the closeness of creature and creator through piety. Al-Ghazali's religion and science are both objects that can be studied or studied and do not conflict with each other
