The impact of different cooling strategies on urban air temperatures: the cases of Campinas, Brazil and Mendoza, Argentina
This paper describes different ways of reducing urban air temperature and their results in two cities: Campinas - Brazil- a warm temperate climate with a dry winter and hot summer (CWa), and Mendoza- Argentina -a desert climate with cold steppe (BWk)-. A high-resolution microclimate modeling system -ENVI-met 3.1- was used to evaluate the thermal performance of an urban canyon in each city. A total of 18 scenarios were simulated including changes in the surface albedo, vegetation percentage and the H/W aspect ratio of the urban canyons. These results revealed the same trend in behavior for each of the combinations of strategies evaluated in both cities. Nevertheless, these strategies produce a greater temperature reduction in the warm temperate climate (CWa). Increasing the vegetation percentage reduces air temperatures and mean radiant temperatures in all scenarios. In addition, there is a greater decrease of urban temperature with the vegetation increase when the H/W aspect is lower. Also, applying low albedo on vertical surfaces and high albedo on horizontal surfaces is successful in reducing air temperatures without raising mean radiant temperature. The best combination of strategies - 60% of vegetation, low albedos on walls and high albedos on pavements and roofs and 1.5 H/W- could reduce air temperatures up to 6.4 ºC in Campinas and 3.5 ºC in Mendoza.Fil: Alchapar, Noelia Liliana.
Urban density, which covers the population and construction spheres, is considered a
fundamental parameter for understanding land use and occupation. In view of the current
situation of the population densification process in urban centers, measuring it becomes
indispensable with regard to its influence on the climatic scale and environmental quality of
cities. In parallel, urban vegetation coverage is considered an essential element in the
environmental and biophilic balance in the urban space, however the areas destined to
these areas have suffered a progressive reduction in priority as well as in volume, both in
consolidated areas and in areas of urban expansion, highlighting the need to reinforce /
recreate tools aimed at regulating this parameter in urban legislation. In view of this, this
work proposes a system of tools called Indicators for Urban Green (IUG), which is defined
as the computational implementation composed of two proportion indicators that, through
an algorithmic-parametric approach, allows establishing the existing correlation between
the parameters of built density and vegetated density. The IUG consists of the Vegetable
Density Indicator by Total Area (IDVAT) and the Vegetable Density Indicator by
Constructed Density (IDVDC) formulated so that they can accurately measure the focus
parameters of this research. To validate the proposed system, the IUG was applied in
hypothetical (internal validation) and real (external validation) tests, the latter being carried
out with the object of the Altiplano Cabo Branco neighborhood (João Pessoa - PB - Brazil).
In the four hypothetical samples, four subtests were generated in different situations of
vegetated areas for a comparative graphic understanding of the values found (diagram
IUG). Then, in real sampling, the selected urban area was divided into six sub-areas that
present different forms of building density and different types of vegetation cover. The
indicators found in the real (current) scenario were: Altiplano 1: IDVAT = 0.06 / IDVDC =
0.4; Altiplano 2: IDVAT = 0.03 / IDVDC = 0.13; Altiplano 3: IDVAT = 0.05 / IDVDC = 0.19;
Altiplano 4: IDVAT = 0.13 / IDVDC = 1.59; Altiplano 5: IDVAT = 0.11 / IDVDC = 0.92;
Altiplano 6: IDVAT = 0.14 / IDVDC = 0.92. Then, two real-life scenarios of the neighborhood
were chosen for the analysis of the trend scenarios and the construction of possible
alternatives, in order to understand the values of the indicators in a situation of minimum
proportion of vegetation cover with medium to large tree predominance. And, finally, a brief
correlation of the indicators found was made with microclimate data from the city of João
Pessoa (Ribeiro, 2013) that helped to visualize the relationship between the indicators with
lower values and the areas with higher temperatures and devoid of vegetated density.
Finally, it is expected that the evolution of the Indicators for Urban Green (IUG) can help
provide data of fundamental importance to achieve greater levels of easing the climatic
rigor through the minimum proportion between the vegetated and built volumes allocated
in the urban space , as well as contributing to impact studies to avoid conflicts in the
urbanization process and to promote the implementation of more equitable and
environmentally qualified measures.
Diante do quadro
essencial no equilíbrio ambiental e biofílico no espaço urbano, entretanto as áreas
encontrados no cenário real (atual) foram: Altiplano 1: IDVAT = 0.06 / IDVDC = 0.4;
Altiplano 2: IDVAT = 0.03 / IDVDC = 0.13; Altiplano 3: IDVAT = 0.05 / IDVDC = 0.19;
Altiplano 4: IDVAT = 0.13 / IDVDC = 1.59; Altiplano 5: IDVAT = 0.11 / IDVDC = 0.92;
Altiplano 6: IDVAT = 0.14 / IDVDC = 0.92.
The changes of urban structures associated with the non-inclusion of climate issues in Zoning Ordinances generate environmental consequences that may contribute to the passerby’s thermal discomfort. For regions of hot and humid weather, as the case of VitAs modificações das estruturas urbanas associadas à falta de inclusão de questões climáticas nos Planos Diretores geram consequências ambientais que podem contribuir para o desconforto térmico do transeunte. Comparative study of the thermal performance of buried and half-buried test cells in the city of Curitiba - PR
Aiming at a bioclimatic architecture that uses passive methods to reduce the energy consumption, this research has the purpose aim of verifying the thermal performance of buried and semi-buried test cells when compared to a ground control cell. The method is based on the comparison of the temperature indices measured inside two test cells and a control one, both made in reduced scale, with the same dimensions and material specifications regarding the external and soil temperature measured in Curitiba, PR, during the autumn, winter and summer. For the performance evaluation, the thermal amplitude, the thermal delay, the differences in temperature and amplitudes of surface sensors and the comfort indexes of each test cell were analyzed. After the measurements of autumn, winter and summer, treatment and data analysis, it was verified that the buried test cell presented lower thermal amplitude and greater thermal delay. Regarding comfort temperature, the buried test cell obtained the best performance during the fall, winter and summer periods. It was also possible to verify that the larger the area in contact with the soil, the better its thermal and energetic efficiencies.
Springtime monitoring of passive cool roofs in subtropical climate
Passive strategies for acclimatization of buildings have been studied by several authors in many countries, especially the
evaporative and radiant cooling techniques. Fiber cement tiles are very common in popular constructions due to their low cost.
However, they have over twice of the value thermal transmittance indicated to this bioclimatic zone according to Brazilian guidelines.
The objective is to present an alternative to reduce high temperatures on fiber cement tiles. In this paper, the monitoring of passive
cooling of roofing during the spring season in a city with subtropical climate is described. Single and combined reflective and
evaporative cooling systems were studied in different environmental conditions. Internal surface temperatures of tiles were monitored
together with weather variables. Results show a decrease of about 6 ºC, 9 ºC, 10 ºC and 11 ºC as compared to the original tiles
according to environment conditions and the combined passive cooling techniques. These results allow for the conclusion that the use
of passive cooling techniques opens up new possibilities to attenuate the internal surface temperatures of tiles and to consequently
decrease the roofing solar heat gain into buildings, thus, providing less air cooling energy consumption
The primary aim of this paper is to compare the thermal and energetic response under periodic conditions of two west-oriented wall systems, which have the same performance when analyzed under steady-state environments. Thermal inertia has been addressed using periodic solutions of the heat conduction equation proposed by Fourier, by means of harmonic analysis, for a period of twenty-four hours, in the region of Campinas - SP. In Brazil, walls and roof systems have traditionally been designed using the steady-state overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value). Uvalues only allow preliminary design decisions for some wall and roof systems, as they do not encompass the dynamic performance of the thermal wave. The results show that two identical walls under steady-state conditions may have very distinct thermal and energetic performances, when analyzed under dynamic environments. The suggested inferences are that the selection of local walls and roof systems should be based on their ability for peak load leveling and on the consequences for cooling energy demand, and that the use pattern of the building has also to be considered.O objetivo principal deste artigo é a comparação térmica e energética em regime periódico de duas paredes com orientação leste e oeste com desempenhos idênticos em regime permanente.
Ventilated facades have been identified as a viable solution to improve the thermal performance of buildings, thereby upgrading their energy efficiency. The literature points out a lack of studies on opaque ventilated facades among the different types of these facades. Thus, this study aims to present research on the thermal performance of opaque ventilated facades using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), considering where the research was carried out, the method used and the main parameters that influence the thermal performance of these facades. The SLR proved efficient in outlining the desired panorama, indicating that this facade model consists of a technology only recently explored in academia with research concentrated in Europe, mainly in Spain, Italy and Portugal, highlighting the Mediterranean climate as the focus of the research. Most of the studies were conducted using computer simulations, followed by experimental methods that validated the mathematical models of the simulation programs. The SLR identified the outdoor conditions and aspects of the facade geometry that have a higher influence on the thermal performance of these facades. Considering the outdoor environment conditions, solar radiation and the year's seasons were the most discussed parameters in the literature. Considering the facade geometry, the ventilated facade openings (presence or absence of joints and grilles), the cavity height, and the outer skin material were the most studied variables.
Validation of the climatic zoning defined by ASHRAE standard 169-2013
Climatic zoning has a direct impact on building energy efficiency policies. Currently, most countries adopt simplified weather parameters to define their climatic zoning, with the degree-day method being the most widely used. This widespread use of degree-days has been substantially influenced by the adoption of this indicator by ASHRAE on its climatic zoning, which is a core element for the prescription of requirements for buildings based on their location. However, there is no scientific evidence regarding the agreement between building energy performance and the ASHRAE climatic zones. The objective here was to quantify the mismatch between buildings' energy performance in each given location and the expected energy performance in the climatic zone they are placed. The study uses a performance-based assessment method relying on building energy simulation and GIS. Climatic zoning performance indicators were calculated based on the energy demand of 52 archetype buildings of the U.S. building stock complying with the ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2013. Results suggest that the stipulated climatic zone misclassifies 10% of the area evaluated, potentially misclassifying highly populated urban areas. These misclassifications have direct impact on the building energy efficiency policies of a given location, which may not be the most adequate for its climate135CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESP303377/2017-82018/00976-1; 2017/14617-
