A failure model for the analysis of cross-ply Non-Crimp Fabric (NCF) composites under in-plane loading: Experimental and numerical study
In the present work, a set of physically-based failure criteria are applied to a cross-ply Non-Crimp Fabric (NCF) composite. The proposed criteria account for the stitch reinforcement and the induced in- and out-of-plane fibre misalignment. A distinction between matrix and fibre failures in tension and compression is introduced, while the in-plane shear non-linear response is directly incorporated to the model as well. The constitutive model is associated with an energy-based damage mechanics method, which consists of five in-plane damage variables per layer level. Within this study, a novel approach to obtain the effective longitudinal stiffness of the composite, as a function of the in- and out-of-plane misalignment, is described. An experimental study characterises the internal structure and the mechanical response of the composite in tension, compression, in-plane shear and Mode I & II interlaminar fractures. In this paper, validation examples for the failure criteria, implemented in Abaqus/Explicit as a VUMAT subroutine, are presented. Tensile, in-plane shear and compressive responses are modelled at a coupon level with continuum shell elements and correlate well with the experimental data. Fibre misalignment, mainly out-of-plane, had a strong influence on the compressive modulus and strength of the composite
Higgs and top physics reconstruction challenges and opportunities at FCC-ee
The Higgs bosons and the top quark decay into rich and diverse final states, containing both light and heavy quarks, gluons, photons as well as W and Z bosons. This article reviews the challenges involved in reconstructing Higgs and top events at the FCC-ee and identifies the areas where novel developments are needed. The precise identification and reconstruction of these final states at the FCC-ee rely on the capability of the detector to provide excellent flavour tagging, jet energy and angular resolution, and global kinematic event reconstruction. Excellent flavour tagging performance requires low-material vertex and tracking detectors, and advanced machine learning techniques as successfully employed in LHC experiments. In addition, the Z pole run will provide abundant samples of heavy flavour partons that can be used for calibration of the tagging algorithms. For the reconstruction of jets, leptons, and missing energy, particle-flow algorithms are crucial to explore the full potential of the highly granular tracking and calorimeter systems, and give access to excellent energy–momentum resolution and precise identification of heavy bosons in their hadronic decays. This enables, among many other key elements, the reconstruction of Higgsstrahlung processes with leptonically and hadronically decaying Z bosons, and an almost background-free identification of top quark pair events. Exploiting the full available kinematic constraints together with exclusive jet clustering algorithms will allow for the optimisation of global event reconstruction with kinematic fitting techniques.The Higgs bosons and the top quark decay into rich and diverse final states, containing both light and heavy quarks, gluons, photons as well as W and Z bosons. Measurement of the ZZ production cross section and Z →l+l−ll+ll−branching fraction in pp collisions at √s=13TeV
Four-lepton production in proton–proton collisions, pp→(Z/γ∗)(Z/γ∗)→l+ l − l l + l l −, where l , l l =ε or μ, is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.6fb−1. The ZZ production cross section, σ(pp→ZZ) =14.6+1.9−1.8(stat) +0.5−0.3(syst) ±0.2 (theo)±0.4 (lumi) pb, is measured for events with two opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs produced in the mass region 60 4GeV for all opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs. The results are in agreement with standard model predictions
Probing color coherence effects in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

The data used in the analysis were collected in 2010 with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. Events are selected that contain at least three jets and where the two jets with the largest transverse momentum exhibit a back-to-back topology. The measured angular correlation between the second- and third-leading jet is shown to be sensitive to color coherence effects, and is compared to the predictions of Monte Carlo models with various implementations of color coherence. None of the models describe the data satisfactorily.BMWF and FWF (Austria); FNRS and FWO(Belgium); CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, and FAPESP (Brazil);MES

Performance studies for the prototype III of CASTOR forward calorimeter at the CMS experiment
We present preliminary results of the performance of prototype III of the CASTOR quartz-tungsten sampling calorimeter, to be installed in the very forward region of the CMS experiment at the LHC. The energy linearity and resolution, as well as the spatial resolution of the prototype to electromagnetic and hadronic showers are studied with E= 10-200 GeV electrons, E= 20-350 GeV pions, and E= 50, 150 GeV muons in beam tests carried out at CERN/SPS in 2007

The other gauge boson, either W or Z, is detected through its leptonic decay (either W→eν , μν or Z→e + e − , μ + μ − , or νν ¯ ). The results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.9 fb −1 collected with the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measured cross sections, σ(pp→WZ)=30.7±9.3(stat.)±7.1(syst.)±4.1(th.)±1.0(lum.)pb and σ(pp→ZZ)=6.5±1.7(stat.)±1.0(syst.)±0.9(th.)±0.2(lum.)pb , are consistent with next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics calculationsBMWF and FWF (Austria); FNRS and FWO (Belgium); CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, and FAPESP (Brazil);

Performance Studies of the Full Length Prototype for the CASTOR Forward Calorimeter of the CMS Experiment
CASTOR is a project of a forward \v{C}erenkov sampling calorimeter for the CMS experiment at the LHC collider, with quartz plates as active medium and tungsten as absorber. Several prototypes of the calorimeter have been constructed and tested at CERN. Results of the beam test performed with a full length prototype in summer of 2007 at CERN SPS machine are reported here
