First observation of the decay Bs0→K*0K*0
The first observation of the decay B0s→K∗0K∗0 is reported using 35 pb−1 of data collected by LHCb in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A total of 49.8±7.5 B0s→(K+π−)(K−π+) events are observed within ±50 MeV/c2 of the B0s mass and 746 MeV/c2 < mKπ < 1046 MeV/c2, mostly coming from a resonant B0s→K∗0K∗0 signal. The branching fraction and the CP-averaged K∗0 longitudinal polarization fraction are measured to be B(B0s→K∗0K∗0)=(2.81±0.46(stat.)±0.45(syst.)±0.34(fs/ fd))×10−5 and fL =0.31±0.12(stat.)±0.04(syst.)
Effective lifetime measurements in the B-s(0) -> K+K-, B-0 -> K+pi(-) and B-s(0) -> pi K-+(-) decays
Measurements of the effective lifetimes in the View the MathML source, B0→K+π− and View the MathML source decays are presented using 1.0 fb−1 of pp collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The analysis uses a data-driven approach to correct for the decay time acceptance.
This is the most precise determination to date of the effective lifetime in the View the MathML source decay and provides constraints on contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model to the View the MathML source mixing phase and the width difference ΔΓs
Observation of the suppressed ADS modes B± → [π±K-/+ π+π-]D K± and B± → [π± K-/+π+π-]Dπ±
An analysis of and B± → DK± and B± → Dπ±
decays is presented where the D meson is reconstructed in the four-body final state K± π-/+π+π-. Using LHCb data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1, first observations are made of the suppressed ADS modes B± →[π± K-/+π+π-]DK± and B± → [π± K-/+π+π-]Dπ± with a significance of 5.1 sigma and greater than 10 sigma, respectively. Measurements of CP asymmetries and CP-conserving ratios of partial widths from this family of decays are also performed. The magnitude of the ratio between the suppressed and favoured B± → DK ± amplitudes is determined to be rKB = 0.097 ± 0.011
Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions B(B0→K∗0γ )/B(B0s→φγ ) and the directCP asymmetry inB 0→K∗0γ
The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0→K⁎0γ and B0s→ϕγ has been measured using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 of pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=7TeV. The value obtained is
B(B0→K⁎0γ)B(B0s→ϕγ)=1.23±0.06(stat.)±0.04(syst.)±0.10(fs/fd),
where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is associated with the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average value for B(B0→K⁎0γ), the branching fraction B(B0s→ϕγ) is measured to be (3.5±0.4)×10−5.
The direct CP asymmetry in B0→K⁎0γ decays has also been measured with the same data and found to be
ACP(B0→K⁎0γ)=(0.8±1.7(stat.)±0.9(syst.))%.
Both measurements are the most precise to date and are in agreement with the previous experimental results and theoretical expectations
Measurement of the effective B0s→K+K− lifetime
A measurement of the effective lifetime is presented using approximately 37 pb−1 of data collected by LHCb during 2010. This quantity can be used to put constraints on contributions from processes beyond the Standard Model in the meson system and is determined by two complementary approaches as
τKK=1.440±0.096 (stat)±0.008 (syst)±0.003 (model) ps

K-edge Radiography and applications to Cultural Heritage
The present work of thesis is focused on application of X-ray K-edge
technique to paintings.
This technique allows one to achieve a topographic map of a pigment on the
whole surface of the painting. The digital acquisition of radiographic images
by using monochromatic X-ray beams allows to take advantage of the sharp
rise of X-ray absorption coefficient of the elements, the K-edge discontinuity.
Working at different energies, bracketing the K-edge peak, allows recognition
of the target element.
The K-edge radiography facility installed at Larix Laboratory, at Department
of Physics in Ferrara, consists of a quasi-monochromatic X-ray beam obtained
via Bragg diffraction on a mosaic crystal from standard X-ray source.
In this work the K-edge technique and the facility used are illustrated. A
characterization of the monochromatic beams in the energy range 7-40 KeV
range and the elemental mapping on pictorial layers obtained are presented.
At the end, a transportable facility for digital radiography is presented and
some radiographic analysis of works of art performed are shown

Measurement of the isospin asymmetry in B -> K(*) mu+mu- decays
The isospin asymmetries of B → K (∗) μ + μ − decays and the partial branching fractions of B 0 → K 0 μ + μ − and B + → K ∗+ μ + μ − are measured as a function of the di-muon mass squared q 2 using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 collected with the LHCb detector. The B → Kμ + μ − isospin asymmetry integrated over q 2 is negative, deviating from zero with over 4 σ significance. The B → K ∗ μ + μ − decay measurements are consistent with the Standard Model prediction of negligible isospin asymmetry. The observation of the decay B 0 → K S μ + μ − is reported with 5.7 σ significance. Assuming that the branching fraction of B 0 → K 0 μ + μ − is twice that of B 0 → K S μ + μ −, the branching fractions of B 0 → K 0 μ + μ − and B → K ∗+ μ + μ − are found to be (0.31−0.06) × 10−6 and (1.16 ± 0.19) × 10−6, respectively
Measurement of CP asymmetry in D-0 -> K- K+ and D-0 -> pi(-) pi(+) decays
Time-integrated CP asymmetries in D 0 decays to the final states K - K + and π - π + are measured using proton-proton collisions corresponding to 3fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV. The D 0 mesons are produced in semileptonic b-hadron decays, where the charge of the accompanying muon is used to determine the initial flavour of the charm meson. The difference in CP asymmetries between the two final states is measured to be Δ ACP = ACP (K- K +) ACP (π- π+) = (+ 0.14 ± 0.16 (stat) ± 0.08 (syst)) %. A measurement of A CP (K - K +) is obtained assuming negligible CP violation in charm mixing and in Cabibbo-favoured D decays. It is found to be ACP (K- K+) = (- 0.06 ± 0.15 (stat) ± 0.10 (syst)) %, where the correlation coefficient between ΔA CP and A CP (K - K +) is ρ = 0.28. By combining these results, the CP asymmetry in the D 0 → π - π + channel is A CP (π - π +) = (-0.20 ± 0.19 (stat) ± 0.10 (syst))%. [Figure not available: see fulltext.] © 2014 The Author(s)
