    Multi-element ducts for ducted wind turbines: A numerical study

    Multi-element ducts are used to improve the aerodynamic performance of ducted wind turbines (DWTs). Steady-state, two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are performed for a multi-element duct geometry consisting of a duct and a flap; the goal is to evaluate the effects on the aerodynamic performance of the radial gap length and the deflection angle of the flap. Solutions from inviscid and viscous flow calculations are compared. It is found that increasing the radial gap length results in an augmentation of the total thrust generated by the DWT, whereas a larger deflection angle has an opposite effect. Reasonable to good agreement is seen between the inviscid and viscous flow calculations, except for multi-element duct configurations characterized by large flap deflection angles. The viscous effects become stronger at large flap deflection angles, and the inviscid calculations are incapable of taking this phenomenon into account.</p

    Do organizations have to change to learn? Examining the effects of technological change and learning from failures in the natural gas distribution industry

    Failures contain valuable information. However, organizations vary at learning from them. I ask whether failures prompt organizations to make technological investments, and whether these investments help boost performance beyond improvements gained through direct organizational learning. I test hypotheses on natural gas distributors to determine whether they enhance their performance by learning directly, by recognizing failures as prompts to invest in safer technologies, or through a combination. Results suggest that distributors learn directly, though firms, which also invest in related technologies, are able to gain some additional benefits. Copyright 2010 The Author 2010.     The skin is both the most important organ of the human body and that which defïnes the physical exterior of an individual. The skin can be conceived as an envelope, representing personal finitude and as well as acting as a sign of subjective existence. This article examines representations of this "envelope" in Western culture, with a particular emphasis on contemporary art. Contemporary artists such as Pat Moore, Helmut Newton, Stelarc, Simon Costin, Orlan, and Gina Pane investigate the possibilities offered by biotechnology to eliminate the skin as a physical boundary and symbol of the body. By referencing the work of these artists, the author discusses how their imaginative engagement with the idea that skin is not a limit of the body can transform the way we view our "being in the world.

    Multiphysics simulation of melt pool in laser powder bed fusion by coupled discrete element method and computational fluid dynamics

    In this work, a transient three-dimensional (3D) finite volume model has been developed to investigate the transport phenomena in the melt pool during selective laser melting of SS316L powders. A coupled thermal-fluid OpenFOAM® solver with the finite volume method is proposed. The model is capable of accounting for Multiphysics phenomena such as melting and solidification, phase change of the material, phase tracking, natural and Marangoni convection flow, convective and radiation heat loss, and recoil pressure due to evaporation. To account for the reflection of the laser beam within the powder bed the Fresnel model has been incorporated. A Discrete Element Method (DEM) based software package LIGGGHTS® has been used to simulate the powder bed generation process, which is then incorporated with OpenFOAM® to study the melt pool dynamics. The evolution of temperature in the melt pool and solidification, fluid flow within the melt pool due to Marangoni convection, and recoil pressure are studied as they greatly influence the metallurgical bonding between different layers and also govern the quality of the products. It was found that the localized heating causes a very high-temperature gradient in the domain due to which the top surface of the melt pool experiences Marangoni convection which makes the molten liquid flow away from the center. The effect of natural convection on the melt pool characteristics is negligible. Also, the evaporation of powder results in a recoil pressure which pushes the molten material inwards.M.S.Includes bibliographical reference

    Local Change Detection from Video Scene: An End-to-End Encoder–Decoder-Type Deep Neural Network Architecture with Feature Pooling

    International audienceIn the field of computer vision tasks, substantial importance lies in moving object detection. Background subtraction (BS) is a frequently used scheme for identifying objects in motion in video scenes. However, the BS technique’s efficacy is dependent on background modeling. As a result, background modeling is effective in dealing with a variety of issues, such as variation in illumination, dynamic background, and poor resolution. Therefore, in this work, we have developed end-to-end deep learning frameworks for BS. Initially, we proposed a VGG-19 deep neural architecture encoder with a transfer learning (TL) strategy-induced feature pooling module (FPM) capable of extracting multi-scale objects at different scales. The proposed decoder framework contains several transposed convolution layers that efficiently project feature space to image space. Further, we have developed a BS scheme where a ResNet-50 deep neural network (DNN) with an FPM block learns to project from image to feature space efficiently. The proposed decoder framework contains stacked convolutional layers that can separate the foreground and background pixels effectively for the target frame. The efficacy of the designed techniques is validated by comparing the outcomes obtained by the VGG-19-based network against 17 existing techniques and the results achieved by the ResNet-50-based network against 28 state-of-the-art (SOTA) schemes

    Power, Legitimacy, and Urgency in Organizational Learning: Learning Through Stakeholder Complaints to Improve Quality in the California Nursing Home Industry

    Although research suggests that organizations learn through interactions with stakeholders, little is known regarding how this process occurs. The author addresses this void by examining how the power, legitimacy, or urgency related to stakeholders’ interactions influence organizations’ abilities to learn from these interactions. Hypothesis tests on a panel of nursing homes suggest that organizations learn more effectively through interactions with powerful stakeholders or those whose feedback requires immediate response. Findings contribute to organizational learning theory by identifying how different forms of experience vary substantially in their impacts on organizational activity. Related implications for stakeholder management and managerial practice are also discussed. </jats:p

    The Impact of Media Information on Issue Salience Following Other Organizations’ Failures

    Research on organizational decision making seeks to understand how external events shape how organizational decision makers attend to particular issues and allocate scarce resources across the organization’s activities. The author investigates whether supplemental information available to decision makers about their own and other organizations impacts this process. He finds that media coverage about particular issues following failures throughout the field can influence decisions regarding resource allocation and that coverage about other organizations may in some cases be more influential than coverage about the focal firm. The study and its findings forward our understanding regarding how organizations scan their environments and how multiple, interacting forms of external information may collectively influence internal organizational processes. </jats:p

    Ecosystem transformation for digital servitization : A systematic review, integrative framework, and future research agenda

    Manufacturing firms are increasingly seeking to capture the potential of digitalization by transforming towards digital servitization. Yet, most manufacturers struggle to realize the value through digital servitization because it requires a sustained focus on forming ecosystem partnerships. Digital servitization research has long recognized the importance of ecosystem tranformation but much of the existing discussion on this interlink is fragmented and understudied. Therefore, this study’s purpose is to investigate how manufacturing firms engaged in digital servitization transform their ecosystems. To this end, we have examined the triggers, firm-level enablers, ecosystem phases and activities, and effects of ecosystem transformation in digital servitization. We provide a comprehensive review of the phases of ecosystem transformation including ecosystem formation, orchestration, and expansion as well as their associated activities. These findings have been consolidated into an integrative framework for ecosystem transformation and, based on this analysis, suggestions for future research are provided for digital servitization scholars.© 2022 The Authors.
