Psychological and Psychophysiological Effects of a High-Mountain Expedition to Tibet

    No full text
In March 1999 a team of 8 mountaineers (6 men and 2 women) climbed up the 6th highest mountain of the world: The Cho Oyo (8201 m), located in the high mountains of Tibet. During the expedition, we investigated the effects of high mountaineering on various psychological variables (e.g., anxiety) and psychophysiological variables (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, skin-resistance) as well as the ability to relax at different points of time (2 premeasures before, three measures during, and one post-measure immediate after the Expedition). Due to a long-term monitoring of the skin resistance, we can summarize that three different adaptation levels can be defined, that appear under increasing pressure: Inhibition of overload, unspecific hypersensibility and exhaustion. The results can show that a telemedical assessment is possible and necessary even under the circumstances of a highmountaineering expedition in order to determine and predict deficits in behaviour and health risks for individuals at high altitudes

Safety of contrast-enhanced MR angiography employing gadobutrol 1.0 M as contrast material

    No full text
Our objectives were to evaluate the safety of intravenous 1.0-M gadobutrol injections in patients with an indication for contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CE MRA) of supra-aortal, pelvic, or peripheral arteries by examining and assessing adverse events, laboratory values, vital signs and ECG findings for clinical significance. In 435 patients, recruited in three multicenter trials for safety evaluations of the new contrast agent 1.0-M gadobutrol, CE MRA was performed with 1.0- to 1.5-T scanners using three-dimensional gradient-echo sequences and phased-array coils. The study population comprised 312 men and 123 women with a mean age of 60.9 years. Two hundred seven patients had an indication for imaging of body arteries and 228 had an indication for imaging of peripheral arteries. Blood laboratory values and urinalysis results of 124 patients as well as heart rate, blood pressure, and 12-lead-electrocardiogram readings of 93 patients obtained during a follow-up period of up to 72 h after the injection of contrast media were available for safety analysis. Contrast media application was performed as intravenous bolus injection of 1.0-M gadobutrol in fixed doses according to the patients' body weight (b.w.) and indication for CE MRA and was followed by a 20- to 40-ml saline flush. Mean dose actually applied was 0.10.27 mmol/kg b.w. Flow rate ranged between 0.2 and 2.0 ml/s. Safety evaluations found a good tolerability with only 4.6% of at least "possibly related" adverse reactions and no clinically relevant changes in blood and urine samples including no transmetallation effect on serum zinc values. Analysis of renal tolerance showed no influence on renal function irrespective of preexisting renal impairment. The ECG analysis (rhythm analysis, pace-setting disturbances, conduction disturbances, and time interval measurements, including uncorrected and corrected QT) showed no clinically relevant effect of the injection of 1.0-M gadobutrol on the cardiac conduction system. Intravenous injection of 1.0-M gadobutrol at a dose of up to 0.1 0.27 mmol/kg b.w. in the indication CE MRA is safe and causes no clinically relevant changes in safety parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, blood and urine laboratory values, and cardiac conduction system

Vessel charter rate estimation for offshore wind O&M activities

    No full text
Estimating the cost of vessels is an important factor for the operation & maintenance (O&M) costs of offshore wind farms. Accurate cost estimation is required during operation of the wind farm. This paper presents the development of the O&M charter rate modelling for offshore wind turbine jack-up vessels under different op-erational strategies. The main objectives of this modelling are to explore the differentiation of charter rates as-sociated with the charter periods and with the capabilities of different vessels; as well as to allow offshore wind farm operators to plan their maintenance strategies through considering the share of vessels’ costs in the overall maintenance costs. In this respect, various jack-up vessels in the offshore wind industry are investigat-ed and the most effective charter periods are identified. The seasonal effects on the charter rates are also con-sidered to provide critical insight into the selection of the optimum charter rate scenario

O miejsce historii prawa w programie studiów uniwersyteckich. Polemika między Oswaldem Balzerem a Juliuszem Makarewiczem (1919-1923)

Oswald Balzer i Juliusz Makarewicz to wybitni polscy prawnicy. Jakkolwiek obu uczonych łączył pogląd o konieczności zapewnienia polskiej nauce prawa należnego jej miejsca w systemie oświaty Odrodzonej Rzeczypospolitej, to jednakowoż dzieliło spojrzenie na kolejność uniwersyteckiego kształcenia prawników.

Verbal memory declines more in female patients with Parkinson's disease: The importance of gender-corrected normative data

    No full text
Data on gender-specific profiles of cognitive functions in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are rare and inconsistent, and possible disease-confounding factors have been insufficiently considered. The LANDSCAPE study on cognition in PD enrolled 656 PD patients (267 without cognitive impairment, 66% male; 292 with mild cognitive impairment, 69% male; 97 with PD dementia, 69% male). Raw values and age-, education-, and gender-corrected Z scores of a neuropsychological test battery (CERAD-Plus) were compared between genders. Motor symptoms, disease duration, l-dopa equivalent daily dose, depression - and additionally age and education for the raw value analysis - were taken as covariates.Raw-score analysis replicated results of previous studies in that female PD patients were superior in verbal memory (word list learning, p = 0.02; recall, p = 0.03), while men outperformed women in visuoconstruction (p = 0.002) and figural memory (p = 0.005). In contrast, gender-corrected Z scores showed that men were superior in verbal memory (word list learning, p = 0.02; recall, p = 0.02; recognition, p = 0.04), while no difference was found for visuospatial tests. This picture could be observed both in the overall analysis of PD patients as well as in a differentiated group analysis.Normative data corrected for gender and other sociodemographic variables are relevant, since they may elucidate a markedly different cognitive profile compared to raw scores. Our study also suggests that verbal memory decline is stronger in women than in men with PD. Future studies are needed to replicate these findings, examine the progression of gender-specific cognitive decline in PD and define different underlying mechanisms of this dysfunction

Planetary stewardship in an urbanizing world: beyond city limits

    No full text
Cities are rapidly increasing in importance as a major factor shaping the Earth system, and as such must take corresponding responsibility. With currently over half of the world population, cities are supported by resources originating from primarily rural regions that are often located around the world far distant from the urban loci of use. The multiple and complex environmental and social challenges the world faces require interconnected solutions and a coordinated governance approach to planetary stewardship. There is a new opportunity to conceptualize a key component of planetary stewardship as a global system of cities that develop sustainable processes and policies in concert with its non-urban areas. The potential for cities to cooperate as a system and with rural connectivity could not only increase their capacity to effect change and foster stewardship at the planetary scale but also increase their resource security

O PROFESSOR-GESTOR EM UNIVERSIDADES FEDERAIS: ALGUNS APONTAMENTOS E REFLEXÕES

    No full text

    No full text
