The social within: Pichon Rivière, vínculo, & the spiral process

Psychoanalytic scholarship from the Latin American region is not well represented in the broader psychoanalytic discourse in the United States. The purpose of this dissertation is to research the contributions of notable psychoanalyst Enrique Pichon Rivière [1907-1977], a pioneer from Argentina who influenced the first generation of psychoanalysts from the Río de la Plata region of Latin America and the broader South American psychoanalytic community. Pichon Rivière’s theoretical corpus is an innovative attempt toward a relational and group-based conception of subjectivity. It attempts to integrate the socio-cultural realm in conceptions of the psyche and clinical intervention. Pichon Rivière was the teacher of notable psychoanalysts from the Río de la Plata region, Willy & Madeleine Baranger, who conceptualized the psychoanalytic situation as intersubjective. Recent trends towards relationality and intersubjectivity in American psychoanalytic psychotherapy suggest Pichon Rivière’s theoretical corpus is highly relevant to current practice and deserves an in-depth review. The present study attempts to explain Pichon Rivière’s theoretical corpus, connect Pichon Rivière’s teachings to the theoretical developments of Willy and Madeleine Baranger, establish links between Pichon Rivière’s theory and American interpersonal and relational psychoanalysis, and explore parallels between Pichon Rivière’s upbringing and his writings.Psy.D.Includes bibliographical reference

    Edouard Pichon et les patois

International audienceAbstract. Edouard Pichon and the " patois ". Mobilized as a doctor during the First World War, Edouard Pichon kept in touch by mail with his uncle Jacques Damourette, the co-author for their Essai de grammaire de la langue française. In his letters of the year 1915, he tells him about his studies of dialects and regional languages. Using lists of words and conjugation paradigms, he seeks to find in the forms of Picard, Franco-Provençal, Catalan and Languedocian the proof of a permanence of the French mentality through these different speeches. Drawing on what he hears from the inhabitants of the Santerrois and soliciting various soldiers as informants, he preferred a philological method to study Provençal in Mistral's Mirèio. Using an idiosyncratic notation of sounds, Pichon has a differentialistic approach. He sees dialects as the prosodic interpretation of the same language, French, as an " affective " melody whose " representative " function would remain constant by the effect of racial atavism. Thus, grammar becomes an illustration of a theory that makes languages, and links between them, the proof of a transcendence of the race on social formations. If there are affinities between French, Occitan, Breton and Alsatian, it is not the result of contact but the persistence of a common biological substrate. In this respect, Pichon opposes Gaston Paris's historicalist vision of Romance languages and Antoine Meillet's sociological principles.

Henri Portine, : « The Description of the Range of Meaning and Structures in Damourette and Pichon's Essai de Grammaire de la Langue francaise : The Case of the french Word comme » This article sets out the analysis of the french word comme by J. Damourette and E. Pichon in their Essai de Grammaire de la Langue francaise (1940). This analysis develops on syntactic and semantic levels. Damourette and Pichon distinguish : utterances of comme introducing a subordinate clause (then, comme is named « strument oncinatif » by Damourette and Pichon) ; different turns of phrases (« echantillants », « qualifiants », « quasiceptifs », in accordance with Damourette and Pichon's terms) ; uses of comme in exclamations. The author of this article studies the relationship between « confrontatif » and « echantillant » in the way Damourette and Pichon describe it, then he analyses their use of zeugma. After a brief comparison between Damourette and Pichon's analysis of comme and Beauzee's one (Beauzee is a french grammarian of eighteenth century), this article ends with some reflections about the notion of "strument » and the place of syntax in any grammatical analyses. Latin American Political Psychology (PPL) is a field of knowledge composed of multiple theoretical and methodological references. As a method we carried out a theoretical study on the work of Pichon-Rivière and PPL. As results, 1) we found aspects that distanced PPL from GOCP, such as biased interpretations, or its non-mention; 2) we conducted theoretical and political approaches between GOCP and a key author of PPL, Martín-Baró; and 3) we translated the group operation of Pichon-Rivière to the PPL, elaborating a psycho-political cartography of the different social positions. We conclude that the repertoire elaborated by GOCP can contribute to the PPL in the constitution of a field of analysis of collectives and social movements

    Sleepless Nights

In Nuits Blanches, the artist Pauline Le Pichon illustrates the disturbing scenarios that prevent her from sleeping at night. Narratives so unsettling and with such a realistic aspect that they become suffocating for the author. The proposal was submitted to the “Living Fiction” dossier of Rotura – Journal of Communication, Culture, and Arts (Center for Research in Arts and Communication, 2024) as a visual body responding to one of the challenges of the call: to de-automatize the gaze, with the proposal of exploring the relationship between fiction and life. If, in the gasp of a sleepless night, the voice fails and words no longer communicate, the image – a set of them – materializes the resistance to create as an artistic process and as a rebellion of life against what seems empty and absorbed. This visual essay offers, through the experience of the artist Pauline Le Pichon, the possibility to continue unraveling ‘nuits blanches’ and the force of life that also inhabits chaos (the origin of creation, according to Aristotle), as a matter of art and the sharing of possible films, through the experience of the image delivered to the eyes of others, of which this visual essay is an example. Estas narraciones son tan In Nuits Blanches, the artist Pauline Le Pichon illustrates the disturbing scenarios that prevent her from sleeping at night. In Nuits Blanches, the artist Pauline Le Pichon illustrates the disturbing scenarios that prevent her from sleeping at night. Psychic processes within work groups: beyond Bion and Pichon-Rivière

This article aims at exploring psychic processes within work groups. Starting from the pioneering research of the British psychoanalyst Bion and the Argentinean one Pichon-Rivière, the author shows that the anxieties which exists below the surface of the task realization described by these two authors can’t be generalized as they have been mainly within training and therapy groups. Therefore his proposal of other and complementary unconscious phenomena when the task is an operational one and when the work group is part of an organization. In a last chapter, the author describes the individual psychological skills necessary to be able to contribute effectively to a group work and the possible consequences in terms of training and intervention
