    No full text
Several Italian comic strips circulated in the comic book Animal, Feio, Forte e Formal. Primarily originating from the magazines Cannibale and Frigidaire, these comics addressed issues related to attitudes that aimed to mock the institutionalized morality of the context, through a critical stance towards society, often illustrated by an aesthetic of the grotesque, which intended to question the Brazilian social context of the 1980s. In this sense, this work aims to analyze nihilism and the aesthetics of the grotesque as common elements characteristic of the Italian comic strips present in the pages of the comic book Animal, Feio, Forte e Formal. It will seek to understand the ways in which the Brazilian magazine circulated a questioning stance towards the moral values constructed for the social context of its production. The method corresponds to analyses in the fields of history and philosophy under the light of theoretical frameworks on nihilism, the aesthetics of the grotesque, and research in comic strips. The expected results demonstrate how the magazine in question constituted a space for manifestations of nihilism and the grotesque as elements that questioned the institutions that sought to impose moral and behavioral standards in that context

    No full text
Purpose This study aims to assess the role of institutional pressure on innovation practices in the port sector. Design/methodology/approach This is a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive approach using remote interviews and asynchronous messaging with professionals from the Brazilian port sector. Findings Coercive pressures are highlighted by regulatory agencies that standardize and supervise port activities. Mimetic pressures lead to the adoption of competitive practices such as benchmarking and technical visits. On the other hand, normative pressures are related to ethical codes and social responsibilities, which influence innovation practises. These pressures have both direct and indirect effects on innovation in this sector. Research limitations/implications This study provides evidence of the influence of institutional pressures on innovation-related strategic decisions in the port sector. Practical implications This study reveals the importance of adequate public policies, including inter-port cooperation and organizational culture, to favor innovation. Originality/value This study addresses the gap in professionals’ comprehension of the institutional pressures affecting innovation in the port sector, thus providing a pioneering approach to the factors involved in this process

From history museums to contemporary histories museums (Argentina, second half of the 20th century) Abstract This article analyses the incorporation of contemporary topics into museums of the second half of the 20th century, focusing on cultural practices linked to circulation, collection and availability of objects for museum collections. Our aim is to articulate analytical perspectives and approaches of different historiography fields and subfields so as to deepen the study of museums with historical narratives—a line of research which, unlike other disciplines and other countries of the region, has only recently begun to be explored with a certain degree of systematization in Argentina. The hypothesis guiding the research is that political and sociocultural transformations in the international scene between the post-war period and the dawn of the 21st century had an impact on social sciences, stressing shifts of sense from history to memory and experiential testimony, and modifying collecting practices and traditional museum institutions. This, in turn, altered the fin-de-siècle notion of “history museum,” which presented transcendent events on the origins of the nation and the provinces, and triggered the emergence of new institutions aimed at addressing other topics, including contemporary events. The interests put at stake by certain actors in different political arenas also promoted the development of museum collections on specific topical issues over others. This configuration of the museum landscape continues to influence the ways in which 20th century phenomena are managed, interpreted and represented in the 21st century. Among the primary diseases affecting the Brazilian dairy herd is bovine mastitis, a complex, multifactorial disease whose primary pathogen is Staphylococcus spp., which is known for its high resistance to beta-lactam antimicrobials and environmental factors. The present study aimed to isolate staphylococci from milk samples collected from cows at a dairy farm in Jataí, GO, Brazil. Isolation was carried out using samples from 90 sick animals collected between November and March. After isolation and identification, antibiotic tests were performed to assess resistance and investigate the presence of associated virulence genes. The method chosen for the antibiogram was disk diffusion, which we used to evaluate two groups of animals with clinical and subclinical mastitis at that property. Of the milk samples analyzed, 58.9% were positive for Staphylococcus sp., with 5.5% coagulase-positive (SPC) and 53.3% coagulase-negative (SCN). The SPC bacteria were associated with clinical and subclinical mastitis, while SCN was often associated with subclinical mastitis (68.75%). The high frequency of Staphylococcus sp. indicates they remain a primary causative agent of mastitis, with SCN having the greatest impact in this herd. Among the antibiotics tested, we found three with prevalent resistance, namely, oxacillin, penicillin, and vancomycin. We also identified coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) as the predominant cause of subclinical mastitis in the bovine herd. Methicillin-resistant (MRS) and vancomycin resistant Staphylococcus isolates stood out as causes of mastitis. MRS isolates also underwent a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to detect the mecA and mecC genes. However, no isolate exhibited those resistance genes. This shows that antibiotic resistance may occur through other mechanisms and genes.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), a malignancy with high recurrence rate and poor survival, may be influenced by immune-related genetic variations and oncogenic viruses. Objective  This study evaluated the clinical relevance of EBI3 polymorphisms, along with tumor Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) and Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) status, in prognostically adverse HPV-negative OSCCs. Methodology  EBI3 (rs4740, rs4905, rs428253) genotyping was performed by qPCR in 95 HPV-negative OSCC patients and 108 age- and sex-matched controls. Tumor HPV, EBV, and HCMV status were assessed by qPCR. EBV viral load was calculated by exponential approach and a relative estimate of EBV copies per 105 cells. Associations with overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were evaluated by Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. Results  EBV-positive tumors showed a significant association with increasing nodal stage (P=0.020). EBV viral load stratification (negative, low, high) presented a non-significant trend toward association with advanced tumor stage (P=0.060). Notably, EBI3 rs428253 predicted worse OS in EBV-positive patients, whereas rs4740 and rs4905 variants were associated with advanced tumor stage (P=0.024 and P=0.018). rs4740 and rs4905 variants were inversely associated with OSCC risk in dominant and overdominant models. Analysis detected HCMV in 7.4% of tumors but was not clinically relevant. Conclusions  EBI3 genetic variants and EBV status may have prognostic relevance in HPV-negative OSCC. EBV may interact with the host genetics to influence nodal metastases and outcomes, suggesting a potential EBV-EBI3 axis, which warrants further investigation. Future precision oncology approaches may incorporate host and viral genetic markers to identify and stratify high-risk HPV-negative OSCC patients

    No full text
A new mesophotic alpheid shrimp, Alpheopsis gorei sp. nov., is described from several offshore localities in the northern and north-eastern Gulf of Mexico off Texas, Louisiana and western Florida. However, the distribution range of the new species extends to the Atlantic coast of Florida, with a previous record from deep-water reefs off Key Largo, under A. trispinosa Stimpson, 1860. The presently known bathymetric range of A. gorei sp. nov. is 42.1-126.2 m and the species appears to be free-living, mainly among coralline nodules and in crevices of deep coral rubble. The new species is morphologically closest to the eastern Altantic A. africana Holthuis, 1952 and A. azorica Anker, Poddoubtchenko & d’Udekem d’Acoz, 2005, the eastern Pacific A. equidactylus Lockington, 1877, and the Indo-West Pacific A. trispinosa, A. garricki Yaldwyn, 1971 and A. keijii Anker, 2007, differing from each of them by at least two morphological characters.A new mesophotic alpheid shrimp, Alpheopsis gorei sp. nov., is described from several offshore localities in the northern and north-eastern Gulf of Mexico off Texas, Louisiana and western Florida. A fatal case report of sepsis caused by Robinsoniella sp.

    No full text
Robinsoniella species are anaerobic, spore-forming, Gram-positive bacilli that are rarely associated with human infections because of their slow growth and the limitations of conventional identification methods. We describe a fatal case of sepsis in an 84-year-old woman with hypertension, diabetes, and chronic renal insufficiency. During hospitalization, she developed impaired consciousness, polymicrobial infections, and multiple organ failure. Despite aggressive antimicrobial and supportive treatment, her condition deteriorated, leading to death. This study identified a Robinsoniella isolate (designated Rp5645) by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, showing 98.35% similarity to R. peoriensis PPC31. As this value falls below the accepted species-level threshold, Rp5645 may represent a novel Robinsoniella species. Unfortunately, the isolate lost viability before further genomic or phenotypic studies could be performed. This outcome illustrates the technical challenges in recovering and preserving fastidious anaerobes and underscores the crucial role of rapid molecular identification in confirming rare pathogens. This case broadens the clinical spectrum of Robinsoniella infections and highlights its potential pathogenic capacity, particularly in older or immunocompromised patients. It also emphasizes the need for timely molecular characterization to prevent the loss of valuable data from uncommon clinical isolates

    No full text
Objective: to design and assess an intervention targeted at reinforcing parents’ competency in caring for premature newborns. Method: a mixed-methods, exploratory and sequential intervention study. A grounded theory was applied in the first phase. The participants were 12 mothers and 4 fathers. A randomized pilot study was implemented in the second phase, with 14 mothers in each group. The main response variable was “care competency”. The CUIDAR Ma-Pre scale was applied in the baseline and follow-up measurements. Results: four categories emerged: Facing premature births, Experiencing the prematurity routine in Neonatal Units, Self-empowerment to care for premature newborns, and Caring for premature newborns at home. Self-empowerment to care for premature newborns was the central category. These results were integrated into the intervention design. Differences in favor of the intervention were found in the assessment. Although these differences were not statistically significant between the groups, it were in fact so intra-group (Control n=13 baseline 82.15; at discharge 117.08 p=0.000 vs Intervention n=14 baseline 80.71; at discharge 121.14 p=0.000). Conclusion: empowerment was essential in the experience; an intervention with this approach is relevant, and its preliminary assessment suggests that it can improve care competency. It is pertinent to conduct a study at a larger scale. ClinicalTrials.gov.
