Digital Counter-narratives for Inclusive Spaces
Many cities still reflect patriarchal logics that perpetuate gender inequalities in everyday socio-spatial appropriation and practices. These practices do not align with what is necessary to achieve the United Nations Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), pointing to the need to identify and address the conditions that limit inclusive urban experiences. This study explores the role of digital counter-narratives in identifying and challenging gendered power dynamics within urban spaces. The main objective is to investigate how digital activism and feminist counter-narratives challenge patriarchal spatial appropriations influenced by misogynistic norms, ultimately promoting more inclusive and equitable spaces. The theoretical discussion explores how digital counter-narratives challenge the exclusionary dynamics of urban spaces, crossing urban studies, gender studies, and digital activism. The research employs qualitative case study approaches to analyse two feminist activist movements, “Girls at Dhaba’s” and “Chalk Back,” and their potential to promote critical analysis of spatial experiences to deconstruct norms that perpetuate the exclusion and harassment of women in public spaces. Both projects operate locally and use images and social networks to document as a form of resistance and resilience. The reflections point to counter-narratives as a way of documenting lived experiences and facilitating new forms of participation and expression of territorial citizenship in dialogue with digital citizenship in demanding an inclusive city. This study offers new perspectives on the contribution of digital counter-narratives to research and the production of situated knowledge for inclusive urban spaces and the need for more studies on feminist research methodologies at the intersection of technology and activism
Disability, education and social media: a systematic review
Social media can support the inclusion of people with disabilities by improving their participation, enhancing their social connections and by providing them with personalised learning opportunities. This article presents a systematic review of the scientific literature on the use of social networks for educational purposes for people with disabilities. The research focused on identifying studies published in the last decade and examining their implications in the field of education, considering methodological aspects and the selection and exclusion criteria using the PICoS strategy. The review revealed increasing interest in this topic in recent years, although there continues to be limited representation at the global level, due to the low number of studies identified (31 articles indexed in Web of Science or Scopus). Conclusions point to the essential role that social networks play in the lives of people with disabilities because of the educational and social benefits they can bring, although certain risks associated with their use are also detected. The review emphasizes the importance of designing digital environments that are accessible to all users, which can enhance their educational experiences. It also highlights the need for continuous support and training for families and educators to ensure the effective use of these platforms
Pottery and resistance: rural women and their transformative contribution during the Spanish Transition. Photografphy as claim for memory
This study analyses traditional pottery making in the Canary Islands as an example of the transformative role of women in the construction of democracy in Spain during the period known as the Transition. In this sense, pottery, considered a minor activity linked to domesticity which, like all tasks associated with the peasantry, displayed gender inequality and disdain for women’s works, was nevertheless a means to economic independence and female participation in the public sphere: thanks to the sale of pieces, women potters generated networks of support and autonomy, although this access to the public space did not break with patriarchal structures. Through a qualitative and interdisciplinary approach, we will explore the gender dynamics and the conditions of exclusion faced by women potters, using archives, photographic archives and oral history techniques, with the aim of making visible the impact of their struggle in the vindication of social and political rights. The results will show how pottery was a space of resistance and collective agency, where women challenged patriarchal structures, contributed to cultural heritage and demonstrated the strength of organizations in the face of inequalities. This study analyses traditional pottery making in the Canary Islands as an example of the transformative role of women in the construction of democracy in Spain during the period known as the Transition. The Use of Web Analytics in Mental Health Assessment: Identifying Psychological Disorders through Online Behaviour
The use of web analytics in mental health research provides new opportunities for assessing psychological conditions based on online activity patterns. The integration of digital tools allows for a deeper understanding of user behaviour, contributing to the early detection of mental disorders and the development of targeted intervention strategies. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between internet activity and mental health by analysing the browsing patterns of individuals with different psychological disorders. The study aimed to determine how online behaviour correlates with mental health indicators and to evaluate the feasibility of using web analytics for preliminary psychological assessment. The tasks included analysing the duration and frequency of internet usage, identifying the types of websites visited, and conducting an empirical study using standardized psychological tests. The empirical study involved 200 participants diagnosed with various mental disorders, including depression and anxiety. Web analytics tools were used to collect data on participants’ online behaviour, while psychological evaluation was conducted using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A). The results of the study confirmed a significant correlation between internet activity and mental health status. Participants with depression and anxiety disorders exhibited increased online activity, spending more time on websites related to mental health, psychological support forums, and social media platforms. Additionally, it was found that individuals with anxiety disorders frequently searched for information on symptoms and treatment options. The findings highlight the potential of web analytics as a supplementary tool for mental health assessment and emphasize the importance of further research into digital markers of psychological conditions. The study results underscore the necessity of integrating digital monitoring tools into mental health support programmes to enhance early intervention strategies
Media Education (ME) is a broad topic, which generates disparate educational approaches. This paper sought to reflect on ME from the perspective of digital capitalism. The objective was to reflect on the relevance of considering the dynamics of media business in ME proposals. The methodology used was a combination of the state of the art and telematic research with field study. The state of the art allowed us to clarify the originality of the work’s contribution to the field of knowledge. The telematic research was complemented by the identification, access and analysis of ME proposals made available in the learning environment of the Brazilian Ministry of Education. The field study diagnosed the understanding of university students regarding digital capitalism. The combination of different methods of data collection and analysis brought new perspectives on the topic. We highlight two results: a) in the process of Media Literacy, Media Competence is developed. This dynamic is called ME; b) the ME approach centered on digital capitalism awakens and focuses students’ attention on the functioning of the media and the interests involved. The contribution of this research is to demonstrate that the combination of EM anchored in digital capitalism, with the values approach, can recover the humanistic education project.
Media education and equality: a bibliometric analysis
Media education has always encouraged critical thinking to promote more just societies, but how much has it focused on equality? Two decades marked by an accelerated technological emergency that brings enormous opportunities and challenges for media education. To achieve this, an analysis of bibliometric indicators has been carried out and visualization maps have been extracted from the Scopus database with the VOSviewer software. The study has been completed with an analysis with keywords in Spanish in the Redalyc scientific journal network, carried out with ATLAS.ti, extracting a semantic network map that contains some of the main codes and links of the object of study. As a result, it is observed that, neither equality in general nor gender equality in particular are the most researched topics in the field of media literacy, compared to those related to technology. The growing importance of different digital media in the field of study in question is also detected, as is the need to critically and ethically address gender equality, inclusion and human rights in a technologically complex media education. Specifically analyzing gender equality in media literacy, in line with the idea of freirean pedagogy, the existence of not only diagnostic research (which analyses the issue) but also antidote research (which makes proposals to improve reality) is evident. Among the former, gender equality deficiencies are detected in the field of educommunication. And among the latter, practical cases are provided and analysed to overcome them. All of them have in common the need and potential of media education to build more egalitarian societies.Media education has always encouraged critical thinking to promote more just societies, but how much has it focused on equality? Looking for a Husband with a EU passport (2000-2005). Citizenship as a barrier to circulation
In this article, I focus on circulation from the point of view of immigrant subjects, as well as the geographical and social barriers they encounter in their movements. The debates surrounding these issues are explored through Tanja Ostojić’s artistic project Looking for a Husband with an EU Passport (2000-2005). To this end, I adopt a methodology grounded in feminist and biopolitical theoretical frameworks. The intersection of these two fields enables a critical inquiry into how Ostojić’s artistic practice contributes to rethinking debates on citizenship and the circulation of immigrant female bodies within the European Union. Moreover, the convergence of these frameworks makes it possible to identify how her work generates performative disruptions in the power relations that constrain the mobility of certain migrant ‘bodies’. Mapping a gendered body – particularly through the cultural markers that define it – motivates its political reinscription within the systems of power it confronts. While movement entails continuous confrontation with established identity categories, it also opens up possibilities for their re-evaluation – especially in relation to the exclusions they produce. This article thus seeks to examine how Tanja Ostojić reconfigures these power relations between her migrant body and the control mechanisms of the Schengen Area.In this article, I focus on circulation from the point of view of immigrant subjects, as well as the geographical and social barriers they encounter in their movements. Media and Information Literacy in Compulsory Secondary Education: a case study in Zaragoza (Spain)
Media and Information Literacy constitutes a fundamental competency framework in the educational field of ESO due to the critical analysis of information and communication that it implies, even more so with the prominence of the digital spectrum and the level of use of mobile devices by the adolescent population. However, despite the recommendations at European level and the different legislations in the Spanish territory, it has not been developed in depth in the country except for a few outstanding initiatives.Given the characteristics of this context, what is proposed in this paper is the analysis of the design, development and implementation of a teaching-learning intervention carried out in IES Andalán and IES Villanueva de Gállego, located in the province of Zaragoza. This is composed of a structure of three blocks of content related to the AMI, where the research has as its main objective the observation of a learning situation on disinformation and information verification.By means of a mixed methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative components through the diagnosis of practices, the evaluation of students’ productions and their perception of the relevance of AMI, it is observed how, despite the daily use of the Internet, a good part of the students do not check the information they receive and at the same time consider that media and information training should be greater in ESO due to its interest and usefulness.Media and Information Literacy constitutes a fundamental competency framework in the educational field of ESO due to the critical analysis of information and communication that it implies, even more so with the prominence of the digital spectrum and the level of use of mobile devices by the adolescent population. Is The New Media Art Capable to Shape the Instrumentalist’s Role? – From Interpreter to (Co)Creator
This article states the influence of New Media Arts on the instrumentalist’s role. By instrumentalist the article refers to those who interpret written music from the Western music tradition, which has the artistic activity grounded on interpreting a musical score by recreating sonically compositions in concerts. This discussion pretends to argue that the musician develops different roles when digital means are involved. For this purpose, the instrumentalist activity as an artist and the new media arts creator’s profile will be defined. Therefore, it will be possible to analyse how the new media usage and concepts could impact the artistic life of an instrumentalist. The idea of creator and/or recreator will be discussed regarding the instrumentalist’s role, and it will be observed if this role changes under the new media arts mediation. To achieve the article’s conclusions, it will use the author’s experience as a clarinettist and New Media Arts artist and various conceptions and definitions concerning instrumental written music from the Western tradition and New Media Arts
Scenographic Space and Its Construction
The relevance of the study lies in the analysis of the changed role of scenography in modern theater art as a dynamic element of the development of dramaturgy and performance. The aim of this research is to explore the history and chronology of scenography’s development, examine the interaction between theatre and architecture, and assess how stage space, shaped by scenographic principles, can influence cultural development. The study methodological approach was a search and theoretical analysis of publications, aimed at studying of the art of scenography. The author of this article used the method of cultural and historical analysis, biographical method, theoretical method, method of figurative-stylistic analysis, as well as the cultural approach. As a result of scientific study, the author determined the quality of the mutual influence of architecture and scenography. The author also analysed a number of ways with which the space functions, from the practical arrangement of the audience and the site design for performance, to the capacity of the space and the architecture of the theatre itself. This research is practically significant for the study of scenography as an art form and its practical application in contemporary theatrical production
