Andre Gide and the Negro, 1940
Because it is generally known that Andre Gide is one of France's most influential contemporary writers, there is no need to justify a study based on his works. Desirous of obtaining the opinion of an influential white author concerning Negroid people and learning his activities in their behalf, the writer of this thesis undertook the study, Andre Gide end the Negro. The value of such a study to the American Negro lies primarily in (1) a better acquaintance with and appreciation for one whose interest in darker people has resulted in a tangible contribution; (2) a knowledge of the condition of a people, who, though distant in territory, are kindred in race, and (3) a challenge for scholastic accomplishment. The method of procedure was a careful analysis of Voyage au Congo and Retour du Tchad supplemented by collateral readings. To secure information concerning Mr. Gide's official investigation in 1938 of the natives' educational facilities in Senegal, a letter was sent him. Despite the anxiety which must be his because of the present war in which his country is involved, the eminent author found time to respond. His reply is quoted on page thirty-one of this study. Grateful acknowledgment is hereby given both Mr. Gide for his amicable letter and Professor Cook, who made such a contact possible. The various factors for the evolution of Gide's interest in Negroid people are shown in Chapter I. Chapter II contains a discussion of the colonial abuses existing in French Equatorial Africa exposed by Gide and his efforts to eradicate these. Through Chapter III one learns the author's personal impression of the morale and intelligence of Negroid people. In Chapter IV an interpretation of Gide's literary art in Voyage au Gang and Retour du Tchad is presented. The results are summarized in the conclusion
There are a wide range of technological applications where porous materials play a principal role. In these cases, much e.ort is devoted to describe its properties. In this sense, image analysis techniques are useful tools that allow us, from a 3D image built by X-ray microtomography, extract some properties of the medium - such as porosity, pore size distribution (via mathematical morphology (DTP-M)) and spatial correlation - which are obtained with a little of processing of the original image. Other quantities commonly inquired are related to a simulation of physical phenomena in the image, such as permeability. Due to the high computational cost of such simulations, the simplification of the porous phase must be pursued. In the present work, we adopt the maximal ball algorithm (a-BM) to this end, and based in this simplified lattice, we propose a semi-analytical method to determine absolute permeability. Besides, from this pore network model other informations can be promptly obtained such as the distribution of coordination number (DNC), espherical pores (DTPE) and cylindrical throats (DT-GC) which complement the characterisation of the studied samples. We apply this methodology to five samples of rocks: three sandstones and two carbonate. As first results, we observe a consistent agreement between pore size distribuition obtained from a-BM and that from DTP-M. Furthermore, we note that the description of each group of rocks is internally consistent, i. e., from DNC, DT-PE and DT-GC we can perceive the similarities of the rocks belonging to the each group, besides the agreement with current literature. In addition, we obtain, for the two samples that have experimental values of permeability, good agreement with the calculated values

Andre Gide: a study of the relationship between the author and his characters
Andre Paul Guillame Gide was a controversial French writer. Some critics claimed he never wrote about anyone but himself; others denied that he used himself as a model for any but his first works. This paper is the result of a study to determine to what extent the characters of Andre Gide are autobiographical. The novel and novelle of Gide were chosen as a basis for this study because their characters are definite and their situations relatively clear. Each major character in these works was analyzed and his characteristics and actions noted in detail. Then a study was made of the author by reading his own autobiographical works and many biographies and studies of Gide. The characteristics and actions of Andre Gide were analyzed and noted. With the personalities of the author and his characters broken down into habits, characteristics and actions and organized, each character was again observed and his traits and attitudes matched with those of the author whenever this was possible. To avoid a confused jumble of characters, one book with its characters was studied at a time. [...]English, Department o

Development, Implementation, and Industry Reception of a Novel Multi-source, Data-driven Building Energy Management Toolkit
Inefficient and uninformed operations negatively impact building energy performance, leading to wide disparities between predicted and actual energy use in commercial and institutional buildings. Though ample research in data-driven building operations analytics has derived various methodologies for extracting energy-saving insights that can inform best practices, these approaches have traditionally remained disparate, and are mostly inaccessible to operations personnel who can benefit from these approaches in augmenting their duties and optimizing building energy efficiency. This research explores the development, implementation, and industry reception of a novel multi-source, data-driven building energy management toolkit as a synthesis of established data-driven approaches in the literature. Energy-saving insights identified from over five separate case study buildings demonstrated the toolkit's multifaceted application to identify operational deficiencies, and interviews with building operators and facility managers regarding the toolkit's outputs were conducted to identify possible barriers which may inhibit operations professionals from effectively deriving and utilizing data-driven insights
Essays on production chains and disruptions: new input-output perspectives on time, scale and space
Modern production chains have captured the gains from economies of scale and industrial specialization by creating local and global networks of intermediate and final goods. Nonetheless, enhanced industrial interdependency has also magnified regional exposure to external shocks transmitted through both demand and supply channels. Natural and man-made disasters have a major role in creating these local disruptions, which regional reverberations depend on the magnitude of physical damages, location, timing and resilience of up and downstream industries. Although stock damages are well understood and measured in the literature, higher-order flow effects taking place in the post-disaster period tend to be overlooked. As a result, current mitigation and preparedness strategies are myopically applied to the affected region as if they had no spatial and temporal linkages. In this dissertation, I advance the theoretical background and broaden the policy implications of the input-output (IO) framework to disruptive events by revising the topics of time, scale and space. In Chapter 1, I explore the issue of intra-year seasonality in production chains and its implications for the IO framework. Due to the limited amount of multi-sectoral data at sub-annual level, I propose a novel methodology to disaggregate IO tables in time that relies solely on quarterly GDP information to estimate intra-year tables. I estimate the quarterly IO tables for Brazil in 2004 and show that the multipliers for agriculture in Brazil deviate more than 6% within year from the annual model. Because of the fine geographical scale of disruptive events, it is essential to be able to consider such seasonal variations at a regional level. In Chapter 2, I provide a roadmap of publicly available data to estimate quarterly IO tables in the US for any state and county. Since data is even scarcer at these scales, I devise a maximum cross-entropy solution that allows the inclusion of specific temporal information for the region. As an example, I highlight the seasonal economic characteristics of the State of Illinois and two of its counties (Cook and Iroquois). Chapter 3 introduces a dynamic demo-economic model that synthetizes existing contributions in the disaster literature and includes production scheduling, demographics and seasonality in assessing unexpected events. In Chapter 4, I apply this new dynamic model in a real disaster event, the 2007 Chehalis Flood in Washington State, and compare its results with current models in the literature. I highlight the importance of accounting for labor markets’ dynamics and fluctuations in the sectoral structure intra-year when assessing the costs of disruptive events. I also show how significant the timing of the disruption is in assessing economic losses of disasters. The advancements accomplished in this dissertation should provide the basis for more detailed analysis of production chains vulnerabilities and resilience, further reflections on seasonality patterns and their effect on industrial linkages, and the role of industrial linkages in regional dynamics.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2020-08-01The student, Andre Fernandes Tomon Avelino, accepted the attached license on 2018-07-05 at 19:10.The student, Andre Fernandes Tomon Avelino, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2018-07-05 at 19:32.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2018-07-06 at 09:33.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12747 on 2018-09-27 at 11:16:37Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-27T16:30:19Z (GMT).
